Here's my sincere opinion about motorcycle tyres for or big Adventure Motorcycles.
Tested on a real around the world adventure.
Mitas E-07
Continental TKC70
Metzeler Karoo 3
Heidenau K60
Shinko 705
There are many brands out there but it takes a lot of time to seriously test a tyre, also depending on weather conditions and style of riding.
So here's what I think about the main dual purpose motorcycle tyres, that I tried during my round the world adventure.
Tested on real adventure.

TKC-80’s are baseline but way too short in life and way too squirmy on tarmac for my taste. E-07 is best of your selection for on and off road for aggressive riding on my Tiger 800xc - 1 front , 2 rears. Had issue with front on USA rain groves, but rock solid everywhere else. Shinzo is great as cheap 70/30 - I’ve run 2 fronts and 4 rears. Tried the Avon TrekRiders (hated them). Tried a set of Motoz Tractionator GPS’ - as good as E-07’s - but always felt vague on tarmac an not quite as good in rain. Spooning on some Dunlop Tralmax Misson tires this weekend; still in search of best all-purpose ADV tire.

I've only had Shinko on my last two bikes, Suzuki DL650 V-Strom and BMW R1150GSA, had both the Shinko 705 and 805. I find that overall they are excellent tires, of course that assessment is skewed by the tire price. I have no complaints with the Shinkos.

I agree 110% with your review. I have tried all similar tires in the last 3 years and my personal favorite is the TKC 70. Like you the bike is fully loaded all the time. TKC never failed me at around 15,000 klm with decent grip all over, the best for all road weather conditions and good off road, but not in mud! . The Karoo 3 looks great but at 6000 klm max I gave up after the first set! Great review. See you on the road. Cheers

@@PaoloCattaneo Hello Paolo, miles later/maybe years later, I tried the K60 Heidenau and I did about 7000 miles but half way through with my 200 lbs of luggage I changed my suspension to Tractive front/back and I pushed it to around 11,000 miles total! Then it was almost time to change the rear tire. Front was still okay! Then a month ago I put the new Dunlop Trailmax Mission ! And then we went into confinement! So no riding! I will let you know what the results are! Be safe......Cheers

Great review, thanks. I had the K60 scout on my 701e and it was a bit scary in the wet when you weren’t ready for a power slide out of a roundabout or junction, but fun if you meant to slide out. They don’t just slip a bit, they do break away in the wet, but great for long miles. I’ve since had a few tyres and loving the Continental TKC70 Rocks at the moment. A really good tyre for wet and dry tarmac and some mud, but less so on wet grass. Great review from experience. Very useful. Many thanks.

Thank you for taking the effort to make the video, very useful. I've been running the TKC70 and TKC80 primarily because I can get the size tubeliess for the KTM1190. Also the Pirelli Scorpion, but the TKC70 sticks better in the wet. I have also run the Golden Tyre, harder than the TKC80 so is very slippy in the wet, but might just last long enough on the asphalt to get you to the off-road

Hey Paolo, great review on these tyres, I reckon your evaluation is very good. I have tried all except the Karoo 3. My next set to try are the Motoz Tractionator GPS. I am riding BMW R1200GS in Australia. I found the Shinko 704 and 705's very good, rode across Australia from west coast to east coast, about 90% road to 10% dirt ratio on them, I found they performed really well and very durable. I usually run Heidenau K60's mainly for the mileage, but I agree with your assessment on the performance of the K60's, however I find them perdictable in the wet once you get used to them. I liked the Shinko 804 and 805 very much too, only down side in my opinion was the lower mileage (I am a bit aggressive on the throttle). Also they have a tendency to be a bit squirrely in some conditions and can slide a bit laterally due to the knobby blocks being in line, but I sort of liked the way they can be slid around easy on the back end. Stay safe and happy travels.

Thank you Paola.....much appreciated indeed. However it would be most useful to know what model of the Mitas EO7 you used (Plus, Standard, or Dakar) and more specifically what your experience was like if you ever had to remove and install the tires by yourself......especially if it was the Dakars? Thanks again!
@danieln3757
@danieln3757 2 жыл бұрын
He is referring to the E07 (Not plus). The only difference between the E07 and E07 Dakar is the stiffer sidewall which is better for off-road not to damage the rim and run it on lower pressure. They are hard (even the standard version) to put on by yourself if you don't have good technique or are super strong, I can't imagine myself putting on or removing the Dakar version by myself. Super hard sidewall.

You ll be surprise what a shinko can do for half price of the heidenau. Check also shinko 5050 tyres too. I tried and reviewed the 705 but they also have an offroad version which is more similar to the k60 and e07
@all41n14lla

The Mitas Tires you can run even flat .. Not more that 25 mph because hey their flat but the sidewalls are so stiff & puncture resistant that NO other tire I have found has a sidewall stiffness like this .. I really don't like the sidewall flex off road .. So I gravitate towards the stiff sidewalls .. Most people aren't going to be able to change them out in the bush unless you opt for bitter stronger tire tools .. They are a beast to get on or off .. But for the best in class puncture resistance I give them a 9 .. I like the dual compound with silicon because it helps make they more grippy .. If you punish your tires I would choose the Mitas Dakar Tires types ..

Have the mitas E-07 on both my CB500X and the AT. Had the Dakar 07 on the 500x but never again as when there was a flat it is very difficult to change as the sidewalls are so stiff. This was out in the remote are.

Thanks for telling us your experiences! My Karoo3 only held up for 7000km (70 road / 30 offroad). The rear is very predictable but the front tire on wet tarmac is very dangerous. It just slips out for absolutely no reason. I will get rid of it even though it could probably do another 10k km as I have no trust in them at all (on wet tarmac). I also found it to perform very poorly on wet grass or mud. (KTM 790 Adv R)
@PaoloCattaneo
@PaoloCattaneo 4 жыл бұрын
Ok. Well maybe you are using those as you would use an offroad tyre. Karoo3 are still a 70-30 tyre...maybe even a 50-50 but still not an 100% off road tyre. I had better experience on a worned out karoo3 on the front, than a new heidenau k60 at the back. Aquaplanned at 120km/h with the rear while the front stayed still and on tarmac. Go figure

Thanks so much for taking the time to talk about the tires. Nobody would know better than you! I'm about to buy my first set for my Aprilia Caponord Rally. So its kind-of a heavy and powerful bike, but it still corners really well and I enjoy "fast" corning on tarmac very much. My only hesitation about buying Shinko 705's is that some have reported heavier handling, and I'm afraid this might spoil some of the corner-carving fun (touring bike style) that I love to do. So do I have anything to fear from the 705's in this regard? My off road riding is all forest/fire roads. Nothing challenging. Thank you!

Hey Paolo! Thanks for your review! I'm looking at new tyres for my V-Strom now, and you've covered most of the one's I'm thinking of trying. I've got the Shinko 705's on at the moment, and I'm not very happy with their grip on wet tarmac - I certainly don't have much confidence in them - so little now that I want to change them well before they've worn out. I'm running them at around 25-30psi and I find they handle a lot more predictably on and off the road at that pressure, rather than the full road psi. So, even though I got a front and rear set for apx $450 (fitted), which is very competitive, I'm unlikely to use them again. Also, have you been to NZ yet? It's very green here :)

Hey mate! Thanks for your great feedback. I ve been loving my shinko especially on wet tarmac so i m surprised that you express such concern about those. I usually ride with higher psi (42r and 34f) but i m mostly fully loaded all the times so i like to have them this way. Well inflated. The one you should try are the conti tkc70 which are very good on wet tarmac but not so good to your wallet. Metzeler came out also with the new karoo street which i haven't tried yet but looks promising. I m really looking forward to ride in NZ. I ve been there once and it was AMAZING. looking forward to it!

@@PaoloCattaneo - let me know when you get to NZ, I'd love to catch up and maybe go for a ride together :) Or at the very least talk about good rides to go on. I don't usually worry too much about the cost of tyres because they are SO important to the bike's handling and safety. I've watched a few reviews about the Karoo 3 and they seem to work better on 1000cc+ bikes, and tracks that don't have too many corners. I'm favouring the TKC70's at the moment because Conti is such a good brand and their rubber compounds are (usually) so good. I'm not convinced that 70/30 or 50/50 tyres are that great because they don't do either road or dirt that well. If you don't mind tyres that are mediocre at both, I guess they have merit. Though it is handy to be able to switch between dirt/tarmac without having to change tyres.

Greetings from Australia mate. Subscribed immediately. Great vlogs. Like you, I’m about to throw in my job and do a RTW trip. The biggest question that any RTW biker will ask himself is ‘which bike?’.. I see you’re on a KTM1190. I have unfortunately dismissed this bike (sorry!).. I’m now leaning towards the new GS 850 Adventure or the Honda Africa Twin.. big decisions!!! I looked at the Ducati Adventure Pro. Nice!!! I’d be keen to hear your thoughts cheers

Hey chris! Glad you liked my channel. Since you are not taking ktm in consideration you may miss all the fun 😉 but hey! In between the gs850 and the africa i would go for the regular africa without electric clutch. I haven't heard much about the new bmw but it s way too early to take it for a long ride especially with the reputation that bmw has made itself with the latest models. The new honda instead is a good value and it runs like a beauty. The Ducati multistrada is another beast that is complicated to repair. But technically, in my most sincere opinion, the best bike for your trip is the one you like the most! You ll figure out the rest on the way mate! Have fun!!

Paolo Cattaneo top stuff mate. Yes I’ve been in and out of bike shops for the past few weeks. The KTM is back on my radar now thx to you and your vlogs ;). I’ve thoroughly enjoyed your vlogs, awesome mate. The DUCATI Adventure Pro is not a bad bike, but I’m hearing you regarding electronics. You’re absolutely correct with all of your comments here. Cheers mate

@@Chris-vq5vr - you need to seriously consider the weight of the bike too. Big bikes weigh more, and realistically you can't go that fast that often, so the extra power from the weight is pretty much wasted. And if you have to pick the bugger up, you'll be grateful you chose a lighter bike (trust me, I know). I personally wouldn't ride anything over 400cc if I were to do a RTW trip that had much in the way of off-tarmac riding, and I'd be looking for the most reliable bike possible, preferably with high torque. This channel's got lots of good advice too (if you haven't already left for your trip): kzfaq.info I've ridden apx 60,000km on a 650 V-Strom around NZ, with lots of back roads thrown in (NZ is SO BEAUTIFUL!!!), and as much as it is a really wonderful bike to ride (comfortable, easy to ride, very forgiving of mistakes), it's realistically too heavy for more than reasonably well formed dirt roads.

Any knowledge of the Motas Tractionator? Evidently the rear tire is reversible depending on intended terrain.

Bit confused on your K60 review. They last super long yet are not reliable? By reliability are you referring just to the wet surface performance?
@PaoloCattaneo
@PaoloCattaneo 4 жыл бұрын
In this sense, k60 performed poorly only on wet, muddy and even sandy surfces, which is what a 50-50 tyre is designed for i believe. That s why it scored poorly. And also because i almost killed myself with it too ahha! Jokes aside, pattern is predictable. If you slow down on wet and avoid challenging offroads, it is a good tyre.

@PaoloCattaneo
@PaoloCattaneo 4 жыл бұрын
Well...mitas are really good tyres. I have nothing bad to say about those. I got out of sandy beaches and they lasted very long. But in terms of performances, are quite poor. Very hard compound and not very good for fast rides. Shinko on the other end, are overall a good product, especially considering the price that they are sold.

I’ve run a couple. They are light weight mostly road oriented tire. Closest comparable in the video is Shinko 705. The Tourance is considerably lighter and has a lighter steering touch. Grip on road is excellent. Off road, they are ok in dry hard conditions. The 705 cleans better in wet gravel or dirt. I did get a rock puncture on a new Tourance, which might be the down side to them being lighter. Honestly I personally prefer the 705, even though it is lower priced.
