I rode a 125 from Brighton to Glasgow in a day. Full license but opted for only back roads. 550 miles - about 15 hours in total with lunch stop. Temperature - 4C. No heated gear. Summer gloves. Felt very lucky to be alive when I reached Glasgow at 2:30AM. By the end of it I was hallucinating and couldn't feel any of my limbs. It felt like I'm watching myself shifting and braking, not actually doing it. I don't recommend. 😂

A quick way of checking whether you are overcoming the electrical generating capacity of your bike is to pop a voltmeter on the battery terminals and with the bike started and with moderate revs, progressively add loads such as full beam, indicators, break lights and in your case heated gloves. Without any loads it should be around 13.6v but 'on load'' the battery should in normal operation maintain around 13v. Drop below say 12.5v and you will drain the battery fairly quickly and your gloves may well have been the last straw on a small bike. Probably worth taking a small lithium ion jump starter on trips like this.

@@pauljones-tj5vs Ridden and sold bikes for years, but went on a trip without basic checks beforehand because the battery was flat on departure. I've struggled to find the alternator output spec to estimate just how many volts were being used by the bike and the riders comfort and camera battery charging goodies (although these power consumption figures are also unknown by me) If she makes a video demonstrating and calculating this then that will make an informative video.

if Kate says she’s spending the night wild camping near a loch in Scotland… rest assured NOTHING will stop her from doing exactly that… After that first ‘hello, I’m your flat battery’ encounter I would have headed straight back home… Kate: ‘ahhh, a challenge….?? I do like challenges… let’s go!’ ☺️👍

We're all still learning, thanks for sharing !.....Battery :- you guys in the UK have a company that sells a little LED bulb that fits on your dash and starts blinking red when your bike is 'under charging' because of high amperage (electric kit) demand. You then switch off stuff to get the LED back to green (charging) - on the move.....It's 12 quid and is a simple fit....Look up Gammatronix 12v LED.....👍👍👍

There's a couple of things that stand out here for me Kate: doing it because you enjoy it; that is all the justification that is needed! Take the long road - how many times have I taken fast A roads and motorways to get somewhere quick - what's the point. Enjoy the journey and feel the scenery. The other thing that was interesting, that I've been contemplating, is to ditch the satnav screen and listen to instructions (theory being, like rally drivers I guess, is that it will let me focus on the road. Having a screen doesn't seem to help me always take the right turn anyway!).

You sum up exactly how I feel about being on the bike, it's not about the destination, it's all about the journey. I've never felt that any journey I've ever had has been a chore. Compare that to being in the car and it's a whooooooooole different story. Six hours on a bike and I feel better at the end of the ride than a two hour drive, which just makes me feel tired and stressed.

Kate you did great at not flapping, not an ideal place to pitch your tent but in an emergency what they going to do to you. I hope plenty of young riders get to see these videos, just goes to show you can still have an adventure no matter the size of the bike, just a bit of confidence and you're sorted. Real shame about the battery flat lining again, it was probably a little bit of payback for taking the rocket 3 keys with you 👍🤣

Enjoyed your vid Kate, and big respec for your riding skills and obvious experience. A tip on wild camping in Scotland from an old buffer (I live here and do it all the time): plan in advance where you're going to camp if in agricultural areas such as east coast, north east, and Boarders and then you won't waste time back-tracking, trying to find somewhere, and ending up on a camp site (been there, done it, got the T-shirt). West coast/ highlands and islands are no bother; miles of open countryside and hundreds of magical places to just pull over, and hunker down. Again, thanks for the excellent vid, I really enjoyed it!
