Where do BMW’s S1000XR and Ducati’s Multistrada 1200 S fit in? They have big windscreens and side cases like touring-bikes, but they also have hand guards and long-travel suspension like ADV bikes. And yet with big brakes, high-performance engines, and loads of electronic rider aids they clearly have plenty of sportbike DNA too.
--
So what are the S1000XR and Multistrada 1200, and more importantly, what can they do? In this episode of On Two Wheels we set out to answer that question-on the dyno, at the drag strip, at the track, on the Pacific Coast Highway, and even in the dirt!

Awesome review. It did help me pick out and pick up an XR. You guys do a great real world review, as well as the technical stuff such as the Dyno we just wouldn't do as a consumer. After a 600 mile ride this weekend on XRT, I am absolutely thrilled! Through lane splitting in LA traffic, cruising up Hwy 1 and taking a fabulous ride up Hwy 33 and down 166, back to the 101, great ride! Yes, my hands buzzed a bit, but my brain was buzzing so hard from the great acceleration, great handling and great ride! I did have BMW replace the handlebar bushing under warranty and the buzzing is not that bad. This bike is just so much fun to ride, and so fun to ride for a long time!

The Multi was in Touring mode for the drag race. You could have at least put it in Sport mode since power delivery is completely altered between the two modes.
@briank3754
@briank3754 7 жыл бұрын
You nailed it Pinoy Bear. I have a 2015 Diavel and the riding modes give the bike distinctly different feels. Touring gives the Ducati's a nice smooth roll on roll off feel for touring. Sport turns my Diavel into an absolute monster. Ducati designed the Multistrada to be 4 distinct bikes in one with the use of the driving modes. The modes change fuel mapping, throttle response, and on the Multistrada the suspension settings. Within each mode the traction control and abs can be adjusted. I can tell you on the Diavel, traction control at a high setting will choke the power, ecspecially off the line. I leave mine set high for safety on the road, but with it off there is an obvious difference. While this comparison was decent, I do feel the Multistrada was not properly set up or tested to work as Ducati designed it. Ducati designed the Multistrada to be multipurpose and the technology works as I can attest to from my Diavel which has a similar powertrain and electronics to the Multi.

I like the idea of transforming a super bike into a adventure bike. It lets you have a sensation of the both worlds if you know what i mean. Some people don't necessarily appreciate the look and feel of a real 100% adventure bike ( with their specific tires, engine feel etc...) so well done to these companies. Thank you for your great reviews. I think you guys funny and specially honest and that's a real quality. Keep the good job :)

Great video guys! I'm in the market for one of these bikes, and for me, the buzz in the handlebars is a deal breaker. I currently ride a 2007 Ducati Sport Classic 1000S and a 2010 BMW S1000RR, and I can speak from first hand experience about the buzz from BMW's inline 4. I did a 2000 mile trip at the end of June, over 4 days, on my S1000RR, and I'm just now getting the feeling back in my finger tips! I'd love to have the performance of that inline 4 in the new XR, but I think I'm leaning toward the refinement and smoothness of the Ducati Multistrada. I have ridden the new MS, and it's a great bike. I'm afraid to ride the XR as I think I'd make an emotional decision, and one that I'd regret after my first tour on it.

Finally I just got my xr last week, after 5 months waiting for it. I previously had a 2010 f 800 gs and i use my bike for everything, go to work, go out of the city and sometimes a little off road. I can say the xr has impressed me in every way. It handles easily, it is a little bit lower than my previous gs, and despite it is heavier it doesnt seem so. I assume it is bcause of the smaller front tyre. No problems in heavy traffic. Comfort is awesome and the seat gives plenty of support. The engine... What can i say? ... Beautiful. Smooth in low revs but with enough torque . And just above 2500 rpm you can ride in every gear in city. A beast if you push the throtle. Suspension is perfectly balanced for a bike like this, yet firmer than the gs. Brakes stop it in a coin. And the quickshifter is a must have from now on. Intuitive, easy to use and addictive. I havent noticed any mayor vibrations in the footpegs and slightly in the handlebars (no more than in my 800 gs). Impressive so far

Thank you for finally doing a decent review of the S1000XR. Most reviewers only ride on the street and give a few opinions. I enjoyed how you did a comprehensive review (track, dirt, street, etc). The only thing missing is I would have liked to see you both take a passenger for a cruise and give your opinions. That's the major bit of info that isn't reviewed on these and ADV bikes. Thanks guys.

Great video, guys! My dad just bought the Multistrada 1200 S because he preferred it over the S1000XR. He said the XR just felt less refined and he found it vibrated a lot. He also found the electronics package on the Ducati much better. Just a note, I found it a little hard to understand you through the mics. This could just be my delicate English ears not being used to the Californian accent, though!

Great Review lads... I flew to Milan & hired the S1000XR (SE) rode it into Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia & back through the Dolimites in Italy on mostly mountain & fast twisties... Awesome.... 9 hour days in the saddle, comfy, fast, brakes amazing...handling & suspension great... Once i got to grip with what mode to use on mountain roads the downshifter was great... never used the cruise control much... but as mentioned the hgh frequency buzz was annoying... managed to ride through it though.. enroute to croatian through slovenian motorways at 8 thou + it dissapeared, or seemed to ... was doing near 150mph..... but at cruise speeds, mmmm, buzzing..... hope they sort this soon.... not sure bar ends will cut it though..... it needs a slighly taller screen ( 4 inch) & a lower set of pegs to make long days in the saddle problem free.....Brilliant bike... expensive but as a great allrounder.... it gets my vote.... £16000 sterling..... may be a while before i can get one.... By then they & Ducati may have fixed their main probs- So will wait a while & ride the Ducati for a tour of Europe next :-)

@@danieloost6523 My experience when electronic management intervenes on injection (eg DTC, ASR, aPRC) OR on the delivery of the engine map ( riding mode, like RSV4 : 1 mode cap to 100HP, 1 mode lower engine torque at low rev but allow full power, and the Last one is Full Torque and Full Power). So, i guess either Traction control or Riding mode will have an impact on a drag race result. If you are confident to win a drag race on Rain Mode while your sparring is on Race mode, be my guest.

+Ari Henning The sad thing is, the same issue existed with the S1000RR when it was released. I haven't ridden the S1000XR yet, but I'd like to. That said, I own a 13' MTS1200S and it's easily the most comfortable and overall capable bike I've ever owned in that it can tour, can rail the twisties, is great two-up, has solid range, etc. I own a proper sportbike for the areas I'd prefer something like the S1000XR. I think though that barring the bar vibes, I'd lean toward S1000XR as a single-bike solution if I were to ever go that route.

+VeeFour I recently bought a 2016 S1000XR and had the same concerns about the handlebar buzz for WEEKS before I pulled the trigger. However, once I did, I purchased a great set of heavier bar ends from HMVP, rode 1000 miles, and now, there is NO detectable buzz AT ALL unless you are REALLY, REALLY searching for it! But it goes away with time and miles as the bike "settles in." That thing is a bastard out of hell with that power band and handles like a dream. Best decision I have made in the last 10 years. LOVE IT!!!

Michael Fitzgerald Happy new bike! don't you just love new bike day. I've just returned from a touring trip around the Iberian peninsula, and I found some roads in Portugal that your XR would have eaten up and asked for seconds. Enjoy your new Beemer buddy!

***** I've tested the DVT Multi and there was no buzz with that. I found some with the S1000RR 2015, but I'd put up with it as it's an out and out sports bike and it'd be worth it just for the massive fun that bike is. I'm lucky to be able to afford (just) to run two bikes, so I have a nice smooth one for touring and a full blooded Italian beast for weekends. However if I was only able to run one bike, then the XR would be the one I'd be getting and I'd learn to live with the vibes, as it looks just soooo much fun.

if it's anything like my s1000r the buzz smooths out after 1000 miles or so. Heavy bar ends all but eliminate it.

Not detectable vibration at all? Hardly. There are buzzy inline-4 engines and there are smooth as glass inline-4 engines. The 999 Beemer isn't smooth as glass. There aren't many i-4's these days that actually are. Couple exceptions: GSX-S1000, Z900, Bandit 1250 (there are others, but none I have personally ridden). Otherwise step back a couple decades to dual-counterbalanced i-4s. One I have experience with was the '96 GPz1100. Smooth as glass from bottom to top. No tingles, buzzes, vibrations, anything at any rpm coming from anywhere. Engine spinning at 9,000 rpm was turbine smooth as it was at 3,000 rpm. That's rare these days for i-4 engines, especially those with one counterbalance shaft....or none.
