I use to love watching the F-15 and the F-14 pilots doing high speed takeoffs at night at MCAS Yuma. They would light the afterburners and start rolling till they could get airborne just enough to get on the ground effect, raise their gear while just a few feet off the runway. They could ride the ground effect and accelerate much faster with no ground resistance. They would go so much further down the runway than normal, then pull into a vertical climb. I was able to watch the flame of the afterburner till they were way up to the point it looked like a star, then the pilot would turn off the afterburner and they would disappear.
