These two parts are priceless in my opinion. I couldn't be happier with the overall performance, reliability and peace of mind that together they provide. I would never build a bike without these two must have upgrades.

I did the same thing. Did my research and people said the rag joint and spring tensioner is crap so I never even used them. My adapter slipped (used some different materials as a shim and failed) and messed up my spokes. Problem is that I bought a one inch hub adapter and my hub is just barely smaller than that. Thus right now I am grounded and considering mag wheels or fixing the current rim and really working hard to engineer some shims so it doesn't slip again.

Wow that idler pulley is the Original junk Idler, that has very high chance of snapping a chain. I have the newer idler but it's still snapping chains, I'm going to upgrade to the HT Spring Idler like yours that chain looks flawless.
@TetheredNano
@TetheredNano 2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree with you...the stock tensioners are horrendous. Not to mention if you have a slanted rear frame, it is very hard to install and can easily derail the chain. The stock tensioners also seem to over-guide the chain and derail it. The spring tensioners are really great. It doesn't put wear on the chain, it's much quieter, and dramatically improves acceleration and top speed.

I'm still using the original chain tensioner and yes, if you aren't careful that thing can easily slip and lock your rear tire up. One thing I did to prevent it was take an old bike inner tube and cut a couple pieces to wrap around the tube on the bike then installed the tensioner over the inner tube and cranked the bolts down, it hasn't moved at all since doing that. I'm thinking about updating my rear sprocket to the adapter type setup you have, it looks far superior to the rag joint setup. I'm using the rag joint setup right now, but the sprocket & adapter is definitely on my upgrade list. As for the rest of the engine I don't really plan on doing anything else to it for power, it does 30mph on flat ground, that's plenty fast for bicycle tires LOL. BTW, great detailed video and explanations of why these items need to be addressed, the tensioner is a major safety issue, if that thing slips into the spokes of your back wheel, it can throw you off the bike in a heartbeat. I didn't know about gasbike.net until running across your video, I got my kit from Bikeberry, but looks like gasbike.net has far more accessories and options.

I bought an analog speedometer kit it broke after the first ride of less than a mile, was far from impressed, bikeberry wanted me to pay to ship it back to them, I said hell no threw it in the trash and ordered a digital one from ebay which has worked great. Reminds me I need to get more fuel LOL, ran 87 miles on a gallon. Seems to run great other than the couple issues I've had one broken mounting stud, and the speedometer.

This is at least the third hack I've seen/read about for using old innertube ;) One was to use it between the engine mounts/brackets and the frame to reduce shaking, and the other was to cut circular "grommet" type pieces to seal the [cheapo kit] gas can cap to the can so as to prevent leaks while riding.

The chain tensioner was my nightmare too..! I saw this piece of shit tilting towards the wheel while I was doing 40 mph. So, I made a similar solution myself. Yours is made out of aluminum mine is stainless steel but only 2 mm thick plate and the arm has a little bend lengthwise in order to be light but incredibly sturdy. I might invest in the sprocket because I haven't the tools to CNC machine it. Happy riding..!
@samurphy

With those horizontal dropouts, you wouldn't have needed a chain tensioner at all. You could remove the right number of links, and slide the rear wheel back until you get your proper chain tension.

Looks like you got that chain lined up straight- that's so important! In my opinion, those xxhain tensioners are waaay over priced for the materials they're made from its ridiculous. People reallyneed to be wary of parts for these on the internet; make sure to shop around for Everything you're looking for cuz there are a wide range of qualities and costs and the kicker is that those two do not always match up!

sprocket adapter and spring chain tensioner FTW! I have a similar gas bike style rear adapter. interestingly, it actually works put on either way because the recessed side allows it to sit further onto the inner Hub so the space and comes out almost identical either way you put it - although I still prefer the way shown in the video where the bolts are flush, so even if things start to come loose you've got less chance of the bolt shearing off against the freaking coaster arm or something like that. rear sprocket adapter is one of the only parts I assemble with Red (permanent AF!) Locktite so it lasts at least a couple thousand miles. Blue Locktite it the first time though, and it'll last you couple hundred miles unless you tighten it too hard or too weak next upgrades on my prefs list could maybe be expansion chamber and Sturmey-Archer front drum brake or disc brake
@robertsmith5323
@robertsmith5323 5 жыл бұрын
when you say you use red Loctite, do you mean between adapter and hub to prevent slipping? or on the adapter/sprocket bolts to prevent loosening?

On my motorized bike on the top chain after about around 2 inch of slack or more top drive chain in middle. I try to periodically check this measurement before riding. I knew I should have tightened it before I took it out but you know how that sometimes goes when you want to go riding. the chain jumped off the first time then the second time from chain too loose come off and binded up I replaced it. But I find if the drive chain I'm speaking of is too snug it's very hard to pedal. The looser chain gets the faster you can pedal it. And I'm sure this goes for the pedal chain too. And I have the stock flat wheel chain tensioner non spring loaded. About how much slack did you have in the top chain when it jumped off if you noticed?

The chain comes of when you ride and sometimes you have to put the chain back on which is so annoying and worthless. Please change the roller and put on the other roller that comes with the stock tensioner, that way you have problems with your chain coming off. I hope it helps for someone who have the same issues that I have

first thanks for the video I do agree with you in both of this items. I have a question as for the carburetor, I noticed that you are using the stock exhaust, did you re-jet the high performance carburetor and if so what size jet are you running? I ask you because I tried one of them with my 80cc and with the stock exhaust it would choke, after putting and expansion chamber it still does, not as bad but I choose to take it off, because it was still choking. Something else that the sprockets guys make is the rubber motor mount, these are nice also.

sorry for the late reply man. I did rejet to a .64mm. It's a little cold blooded with this lean of a jet but once it warms up it runs great. These carbs are limited in tuning to either jetting or the idle adjustment screw. Chances are you will not have perfect throttle response from idle to wide open throttle but a .64 jet was the best overall for me.

Nice build, very informative on the parts, I'm building a 79cc predator setup, the engine is mounted on the rear rack, 12 tooth top gear and 48 tooth on bottom, using the maniac hub system, they are a blessing, this using a centrifugal clutch with a high end #41 chain, looking for quality chain tensioner, your setup won't work on this build, this a brand new Trek 7.1 very light touring bike, I'm hoping to reach 35 mph, I had a Station Chain friction drive kit with a high end Zenoah 43cc two stroke engine on it, sold as a kit by station, very high quality, it could reach 31 mph, not bad for a friction drive.

+sc1212able Thanks man. Yeah I don't know where you might find a good tensioner with that set up. I'm working on a skyhawk build from the frame up right now but my next build WILL be a four stroke. After jetting my carb on this set up I was able to hit 32mph and I'm 240lbs using a 44t sprocket. IT made a real difference in overall engine performance just with the right size jet. Before I rejetted, I struggled to reach 25mph.

AT1234 you either need a transmission or you need a smaller sprocket to go faster. Or a larger on for more torque

Yeah well in 8 months you'll be looking to improve on a few things if you do any riding with that if you haven't broken the assembly or it has with much assist the kit chain has got to go a reed kit is a must and I don't thing the engine mounts and fasteners will hold up long without welding some portion of it. Out side that I agree the sprocket kit is decent I don't have the money after doing the other sh*t..

For all you guys that want to turn max speed top end. Record max speed, then loosen up your drive chain record Max speed again, for me it seems on my 4-stroke motorized bike top chain slack measurement is in the middle of chain. measured with tape measure is about 1.250 - 1.750 is where I run the best at pedaling that is. when I snug up the drive chain more than than 1.250 I could barely pedal the bike at all. because it has more resistance and I'm sure that goes for the pedal chain also. Loosen your chains before and after and check your top speed and give us some feedback. And I think when I let mine go a little too far on the chain slack on the top drive chain in the middle it was about two inch or a little more when it come off the first time and the second time it was within chain slack spec. but it come off so I replaced with a new drive chain. Chains will get worn with time and stretch making more chain slack, so periodically you'll have to tighten it. And at some point you'll have to move wheel all the way forward, move engine back toward rear wheel, put chain tensioner all the way down and then take Link out if needed and still have enough chain slack. Before I installed my chain I soaked it in oil a few days before installing it.

Very useful video, however I don't share the same thoughts about the hard rubber adapters for the sprocket, the 2 stroke engine is not soft in normal use there are more pulls and push to the chain than we may think, this can punish the bearings inside the hub of the rear wheel so the stock adapters act like dampeners between the transmission and the wheel itself, they come with lock nuts and lock washers which will never fall off, as I said its just my theory. I drilled a hole in the middle of the chain tensioner between the tube of the bike and the 2 14mm screws, it works amazing, Im thinking about building a homemade spring tensioner since I can't find one for less than 40$ which I think its too damn expensive for a metal piece and a spring...
@lezenfilms
@lezenfilms 7 жыл бұрын
Just get a piece of metal, drill three holes, one middle and two on either side, put a bolt through the mid hole and put where the tensioner went. On the left put the tensioner wheel and the right put a spring pulling towards the bike
@cbgreenbay

Yes that's exactly what I did . Except I used half an old brass door hinge for the metal and just cut off the part that the hinge pin went into. Maybe you got this ideal from my video ? Idk .

Iv'e seen the stock tensioner fall into the spokes. Iv'e also drilled the little set screw to hold stock tensioner. The guy that bought the bike with the set screw forgot to pull the clutch at a stop and the frame bent where we drilled the hole. If you are 200 pounds think about heavy duty rear wheel, If your 250 think about a 29 inch bike.

Beekibye YES! Exactly my thoughts! They sell those for way too high because they know there are only a couple options out there. There is Tons of DIY creation space in the motorized bicycle world and people just need to start developing new and better ways of doing stuff then sharing that knowledge on the webs so everyone can benefit from it! We dont need to give those Chinese corporations any more money than is absolutely necessary.

the most important upgrades are to put a long tailpipe that reaches the back tire and the carb that you have. I mounted a motor on a chopper bicycle and did not have to use a chain tensioner and the rear sprocket that came with the motor works fine. the motors should never be put on a normal bicycle to begin with they are made for high quality beach cruiser bikes and chopper bikes not BMX or mountain bikes

Tbh I find that even without this chain tensioner that happens. The way I found to combat that is take the manifold off there and the back plate of it that the chain would ride on I ground it out in a half moon shape just enough room for the chain to more freely turn under the manifold. It's a problem with all of these kits even the "bbr tuning" over priced JUNK

I agree those rubber rag sprocket adaptors are junk. I am 63 years old and have been a professional fishing guide since 1976 so I build these motorized bikes to leave at the boat take out for the end of the day when after using the drift boat to fish a long stretch of river then use the bike to get back up the river to get the truck & trailer to come back to the boat launch take out to load the boat. I don't need speed I just need reliability to get back up the river to the truck and boat trailer which could be a 10-mile motor bike ride and ride just before dark you don't want to peddle a bike the 10 miles. I have one bike with a 212-predator engine and a second bike with a 2 stroke 80 cc motor.
