JIMBO'S GARAGE

4 жыл бұрын

#JimbosGarage #Welding #MetalFabrication This is the last of the three part video I did building this retractable metal hobby train table. This was a very unique build that took some time but in the end turned out great. We were not working off of any plans so we learned as we went. The client was very happy.

Anybody who criticises the size should pay more attention as multiple times Jim makes it clear this is the dimensions the client wanted, his job is to do what’s been asked for. Jealously is a terrible thing. Great work Jim as always.

That is pretty slick! Who are these people that say that table is too big? As someone that is six and a half feet tall, I would love that size table! The only thing I would change is the outer ring to inner ring attachment configuration, it seems it might be a bit difficult to stop the motor exactly where you need it to install the pins. Otherwise it looks like a great idea.

I waited for you to finish the whole series before describing a similar setup that was done by fellow model railroader for his layout. He suspended his 12' X 8" L shaped railroad using 3 cables from the trusses in the 2 car garage. The 3 cables went through 3 pulleys above the bottom cord of the trusses and were combined into 1, then through a 4th pulley then down the a winch mounted waist high on the wall. 3 cables were attached to 2 X 6 joists under the L shaped bench work. A block was attached to the cable between 4th pulley and the winch to hit micro switches to control up and down over travel. A small induction motor was used to power the winch controlled by up down and on off switches. The entire setup weight less the 300 lbs.

Nicely built, very clever design, could have other applications. Over time, because the lifting cable winds from two different ends of the same drive shaft will not one end of the table eventually get ahead or behind the other end? I see maybe an "open-loop" problem.

is there a connection that comes together at the ceiling for the electricity for that light underneath the table, I figure the rest will plug in with a cord when it;s down.

There is a cable reel above it on the right that you can see at the end that plugs into the table. The wire is black but you can see it against the cabinets on the back wall

Why not just have a standard shop bought large metal framed folding leg table, and fit threaded lifting eyes in each corner. Lower the 4 lifting wires and clip to each eye, lift it with the motor and fold the legs away on the way up. Seems like the retracting metal frame is totally unnecessary. As is the custom table. Could do the above in an afternoon with readily available items.. suppose you’d have to ensure the table could take the weight, but even if you had to brace it..... much more straightforward..
