The Toyota RAV4 hybrid has become a best seller, helping propel the RAV4 to the top spot in compact utility sales. Ford has come back to the market with a new Escape Hybrid after being out of the market for 8 years. Even though the RAV4 hybrid outsells the Escape Hybrid, Ford was first with a hybrid utility.Both the RAV4 hybrid and Escape Hybrid come with a 2.5L 4-cylinder matched to an 88kW electric motor but the RAV4 has the advantage in terms of power with 219hp VS the Escape at 200hp. Horsepower isn't the only thing, both of these new Hybrid SUVs are very efficient but the Escape has better fuel economy ratings at 5.4L/100km in the City and 6.2L on the HWY. The RAV4 Hybrid is rated at 5.7L/100km in the City and 6.3L on the HWY. The RAV4 looks much bigger than the Escape but in reality they are close in size except for the cargo area, the RAV4 is the clear winner. Legroom and comfort on both rows of sets is similar. The Escape has some features not found in the RAV4 Hybrid, like a panoramic sunroof, head-up display and digital interment cluster. Both of these have a similar level of comfort but the Escape has a slightly higher seating position for good outward visibility. The two models tested are the RAV4 XSE Hybrid at roughly $38,000 CDN and the Escape Titanium Hybrid with an additional package that brings the price up to roughly $37,000.

Living in Phoenix AZ, I’m glad the Escape has a liquid cooled battery vs the air cooled battery on the RAV4. I also appreciate that the Escape has a 5 star crash rating for all occupants vs. the 4 star crash rating for the driver on the RAV4.

However, Ford's reliability, when compared to Toyota, is atrocious. Also, to be hybrid-specific, Toyota has millions of these powertrains on the road today with many going 300k+ trouble-free miles. Who knows how the Ford system will age. I am a Ford guy but if it were my dollar I would slam it down on the table for the Toyota.
@MrClownWorld
@MrClownWorld 2 жыл бұрын
@@smarticus6384 I’ve had Volkswagens, Fords, Jeeps, Audis, Hondas and one Toyota. The Toyota was the most unreliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. This is anecdotal obviously but I’ve had tremendous good fortune with all the Fords I’ve had. Look at all the 15 year old Ford Escape hybrids still in use as NYC Taxis.
@smarticus6384
@smarticus6384 2 жыл бұрын
@@MrClownWorld is good for you. That is awesome. I have also owned both new Ford's and Toyota's. I will admit that some of the Toyota reliability reputations may be slightly overrated, but still earned, just as Ford’s poor quality reputation might be unfair, but still earned. These things are derived from the reality of ownership and reported service issues. While you may have had great experiences, others have not. I could care less really what brand someone else buys but I know what I have seen with vehicles that I had owned and in some scenarios, I would still recommend a Ford over the Toyota, but not when it comes to long-term ownership of a Hybrid powertrain. If I were leasing, then I could easily recommend the Ford.

@@smarticus6384 Ford used to buy hybrid systems from Toyota (Aisin) for the previous Escape. Then they started making transmissions by themselves. For what I know they have rather good reliability record. If you want to find out more details, search for Weber auto channel for brilliant tear down and detailed analysis videos.

I have to agree, it is tough to find many reviews like this. I just got the 2021 Ford Escape (not the the Titanium, but SE) and really like it. It is a nice smooth ride, the MPG is really great. I like the smooth design. I would say the Escape is a bit of an underdog in the hybrid market and overlooked. Another tidbit of info, the Escape is it has a mechanical AWD system, while the RAV4 has an electric AWD. So, in theory, if there is any ice/snow, the Escape could do a bit better in those conditions.

Ford's and Toyota's hybrid drivetrains are ironically have common inception - Toyota popularized it in the Prius, but Ford has applied the near identical design in the early 2000s Escape hybrids. Because of the same engineering design on the twin motor planetary gearset design, both companies signed an understanding that they would not file lawsuits for shared technologies.

Not being a fan of the chunky look of the Toyota RAV 4, I would prefer the clean lines of the Ford Escape and I would just like Andrea, “politely” disagree with Zack that the Ford Escape looks anything like the much more expensive Porsche Cayenne. I ordered my Ford Escape 4 X 4 Hybrid on October 10th 2004! Yes I had one of the first 4 X 4 Ford Hybrids finally getting it on April 1, 2005! We wanted a 4 X 4 as we were planning to move to Lake Tahoe the next year from Orlando FL. With normal driving in Orlando I averaged about 35 MPG. On the highway it averaged 29 MPG as long as you stayed below 65 MPH. I drove from Orlando to Zephyr Cove, NV 2,385 miles towing a 19 ft boat with luggage in the cab and lawn mower/garden tools in the boat. I pushed it all the way getting to Lake Tahoe 82 hours after I left Orlando. I was going well over the speed limits all the way stopping at rest areas when I got tired to sleep a few hours and go again. I averaged 19.85 MPG with a loaded cab towing a boat going fast even up mountain grades as the electric motor didn't feel altitude! Living in the Lake Tahoe basin there are NO straight/flat roads that my mileage was not as good as Orlando. My mileage always stayed around 31/32 MPG. My Ford Escape with a fairly high clearance and Toyota's Traction Control with BF Goodrich Dueler Rugged Terain tires did very well in the snow and on icy roads. I sold it for $7,500 in 2014 after buying my Tacoma 4 X 4 four door pick-up. It had 220,000 miles on it and other than a steering module it never failed me.

Resale value means nothing because it is based on MSRP, not actual sale price. Toyotas and other manufacturers that have a high resale value usually sell on the dealer lots at MSRP. Where as cars with low resale value usually have more rebates and dealer discounts and sell below MSRP. So, when a car sells after a few years, and you base resale price percentage on MSRP and not actual sell price the car sold at MSRP will incorrectly have a higher resale value.

You need to mention in your review that here in Canada RAV4 hybrid is available in 4 different trim levels whereas Ford Canada sticks us with the Hybrid Escape only in top end Titanium trim. And no, Americans, it is not available in SE Sport trim here. As a result we have a RAV4 XLE ordered because we could get cloth seats. I have a Ford C-Max hybrid, the car Ford replaced the earlier Escape hybrid with. It gets ~44 mpg. It’s nice to know the new Escape hybrid gets good mpg. I recently rented a gas only new Escape and didn’t like the acceleration compared to my C-Max, from stop and in city driving. Hybrids have that immediate torque advantage. But I liked the sliding rear seats on the new gas Escape- is that also a feature in both hybrids you tested, or is the battery in the way? It helps rear seat legroom to have that.

Recently purchased the escape hybrid AWD in titanium trim, rapid red with sandstone interior. I love it. Not much I would prefer in the Toyota Rav4-H and I test drove and considered it thoroughly. I’ve been averaging 43 mpg all in with regular driving in the first few hundred miles. The ride is very comfortable and the vehicle handles great. Coming from an early release Tesla Model 3, I have to say the build quality of the Escape really surpassed my expectations. I still have an 06 Escape XLT V6 AWD too with 174K miles and it runs strong save some small fluid leaks. I love the euro design on the 2020. To me it looks like Porsche and Tesla made a little Ford. The RAV4 price was too high for what you get and I personally just don’t care for the masculine truck-like design. Also technically the AWD being mechanically driven in Escape and not in the Rav was a selling feature for me as well. I’ve owned newer model Toyota’s in recent years as well but they remind me of NYC Taxi Cabs especially Camry, Rav4, and Highlander.

Had an AWD Ford Explorer for 7 years and I was hoping to get 10 years out of it, however, it started falling apart: 3 recalls, premature rusting, leaking axle seals, sway bar bushings, even the parking brake failed. Styling differences? Comes down to the following, I think. The current generation RAV4 takes its design cues and overall look from its big brother, the 4Runner. Though no one will buy a RAV4, especially the Hybrid, for off-roading, its looks hints at that. The Escape, on the other hand, is meant to appeal in part to consumers who in the past might have chosen a "family sedan" or (in earlier days) a wagon all of which have disappeared from Ford's North American lineup. Resale? Resale value and depreciation is often misunderstood. Consider the following. In the US a top trim fully loaded RAV4 Hybrid has an MSRP of $40,595 (USD) vs a comparable top trim Ford Escape of $38,290. And in the US where dealers can add "market adjustment" second stickers to vehicles (A practice that as I understand it is prohibited in Canada) the difference is likely considerably greater than MSRP. For example, here in the Seattle area according to "Autotrader.com" every RAV4 Hybrid within 200 miles is listed at MSRP or more. On the other hand, Escape Hybrids are routinely listed at $1000 or less than MSRP. So realistically assume that a top trim (Titanium) Ford Escape can be purchased for about $3000 less than a comparable Toyota Hybrid. The Toyota is indeed likely to hold its resale value better than the Ford. But even if one replaces a vehicle after a single year, the greater resale value of the RAV4 is unlikely to make up for the $3000 savings of the Escape in the original purchase. And since the difference in resale value shrinks with every year of ownership, the difference between the resale value of the two comparable models is likely to be less than a thousand dollars in five years. Thus, the initial $3000 in savings for the Escape would still amount to a $2000 savings. The RAV4 may well enjoy other advantages compared to the Ford Escape. But any advantage in resale value has to take into account the potential to realize a significant savings in initial purchase price.

I bought an Escape hybrid PHEV 2020 TITANIUM full trim with panoramic roof August 11, net price in Quebec Canada 43,000k, Ford employee rebate 4716$ plus 3000$ price adjustments, in Canada 2,500$ rebate for a phev and Quebec province rebate 4000$ so a total rebate from Ford of 7716$ plus 6500$ from Canada and Quebec province. All rebates( 14216$ ) 1.99% 5 years, could not find better deal. In Canada the Rav4 as a rebate total of 14500$ from the both government, because of the 18kwh and make a lot of controversy because the double rebate amount allowed of the Escape who run 61 km on battery mode and the Rav4 68km, with that little 7 kilometers have the same rebate usually allowed to full electric vehicles. Sorry for my English who could be painful to read, but I'm a French-speaking.

The black cladding may seen unfinished to some people. But if you see in terms of style, you'll realize that it blends with the entire design of being rugged. And not all CUVs or SUVs have plastic claddings. Ford's traditional take on style is very simple and looks like they're holding on spending too much to restyle their vehicles. The same is true with the recent redesign of the Explorer and F150. The changes were very subtle that it still looks like the previous generation. Also, the Escape was redesigned for women as per Ford's people when they introduced this model.

Interesting review. Real world figures rather than car computers in the end 5.5 L per 100 km translates to 51.2 mpg imp, the measurement that Canadians once used, the figure shown was in USA mpg! My last tank in my 2017 Kia Niro hybrid was 4.3 mpg . Summer driving brings better results. I live in Burnaby and until Covid -19 when I have stuck to the Lower Mainland, have driven down to the Mexican border via Los Angles, back via National parks in the Sierra Nevada, been to Banff. Lots of Mt driving and high speed freeways. Snow is not a problem even though its not a 4 wheel /al wheel drive vehicle.

The Ford Escape Hybrid started in 2005 as a new vehicle with a new platform and ran until 2012, in 2013 they completely changed the look of the Escape on a new platform and discontinued the Hybrid version, but they started making the 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid on the same platform as the old Escape Hybrid. 2018 was the last year of the C-Max and the new Escape Hybrid is built on the same platform as the Old Escape Hybrid and the C-Max. So in essence Ford has been building these Hybrids for 16 years and they are pretty good vehicles. FYI the new Bronco Sport is built on the 2013 Escape platform.

the rav4 is heavier... and can carry 10 litre's more fuel... but if on the way up they were moving at higher speeds(highway) the rav4 is a little better, but on the way back they had more stop and go and traffic... the escape is way better... also having driven both the rav4 while being more zippy does not transition well between the gas and hybrid system... that's why at low speed the escape has way better fuel efficiency. If your doing lots of highway with no traffic the rav4 will be better fuel economy vs the escape is a better city and traffic vehicle... props to both vehicles... your a winner no matter the choice

Every car I've ever owned always had been mileage then what it said it did (I'm on my 3rd car.) In my opinion I feel like the manufacturers purposely underestimate the actual mileage of their models. Because it's better to underestimate than overestimate something so important. Mileage and fuel economy is one of the biggest reasons why someone buys a specific car make & model. So, if a manufacturer overestimated their fuel economy or mileage then the buyer can be very upset and there can be a huge lawsuit for false advertisement. But underestimating mileage actually brings joy to the buyer when they find out that they actually get MORE mileage. It also depends on the gas you use. On all my cars I've owned, I went to a few gas stations and filled up my tank and wrote down the mileage per each 1/4 tank and then devised which gas was best for my car that way. As well as how you drive the vehicle and if the vehicle is meant for such driving. The features you're using such as AC/Heater, heated seats, etc. What driving mode or shift your in. Plus having your windows down while driving also reduces fuel economy.
