The all new 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid sees a return of the hybrid power train after an eight year hiatus. When it launched in 2004 it was a sales leader with little to no competition, but in its absence, the Toyota Rav4 has taken over. However, the Escape hybrid is back and there’s some key areas where it performs well against it’s biggest competition.

I've had my 2020 Titanium hybrid AWD for four months and I love it. I drove both the Rav and CRV hybrids and the Sync 3 is the best out of the three. I've had zero problems with the Escape its my first Ford ever so far all good.

I just bought an SE Sport Hybrid, but I'm nervous about departing from Toyota (previously drove a Prius for 8 years). Are you still loving the Escape?

@@norsetomeadyou Yes I am, it my first Ford and I was also nervous. So far its been great I have a little over 5k miles on it and lifetime MPG is 40.7, last tank 43.1.

hikersid Oh, that’s wonderful to hear. I’m not crazy about the interior design and materials, but the fuel economy and Ford’s 0% financing got me!

I had the first 2001 Escape (in the Mazda Tribute twin). It was good for that time period but mpg was horrible and it cost a lot for a number of front end issues repairs. I'm considering this titanium hybrid because I'm tired of wasting fuel every stop and downhill (they should all be generating electricity). I've tested both a 1.5 turbo escape (2020) and the hybrid. They both feel really good. I don't care that much about plastics in the car as long as it's comfortable, decent leather, etc. Thanks for your excellent review. I am not a Toyota fanboy or any other manufacturer. Ford has not been great in the past with long-term reliability. I may give them the benefit...

Nice review! I hope you can compare it to the CR-V as well. Doing a PHEV comparison would be great especially when the Kia Sorento Hybrid and PHEV come out.

I’m in Michigan so I’m interested in a good winter driving car that also gets good gas mileage. Seems like this might do it. Sleek design as well; sharp looking car.

Is the infotainment issue about sync 4 or Apple Car Play? I'd like to see Android Auto. In my opinion Car Play has a lot more glitches than Android Auto

Why do 2nd row seats in SUVs/CUVs look so flat and un-contoured? And no rear heated seats in the Escape?

Damn I didn't know how glitchy Sync 3 was, I assumed it was super polished by now but seems not - thanks for pointing this out. ALSO, after the launch focusing so much on the amazing back seat, it looked completely "sub compact" when you got back there, another good call out. I was expecting more bang for buck, just not seeing it now :(

My Sync 3 works great and after driving the Rav and CRV the Sync3 worked the best, 2020 Escape hybrid AWD 5k miles no problems so far.

Thanks for the video! I've been combing KZfaq for 2020 Escape Hybrid reviews, after buying an SE Sport Hybrid (it's currently in transit). I previously drove a Prius for 8 years, and was set on finding a 2019 Rav4 Hybrid because I love Toyota. But Ford's price and financing won me over... Should I be concerned about abandoning Toyota? I don't want to regret this Escape!

Ford and Toyota originally co-developed their hybrid system together. It’ll be very reliable. They still have the old Ford Escape hybrids running around New York as taxi’s.

@@markray8629 For day to day driving, it suits me very well! But then again, I'm single with no children and only 5'7. I do find the back row to be very roomy though. And I saw at least one video on here that put the Escape through the car seat test (it passed their approval). Quite a bit of cargo space in the back too! I have the SE Sport with fabric seats, but since you have children, you may want the higher trim (Titanium) with the leather seat upgrade.

I’m happy for you that your new car is working out. I bought my Persian Green SE Sport Hybrid back in December 2019. Haven’t driven too much because of the pandemic. I’m a bit over 5,300 miles in 10 months. No problems. Best of all, my wife, who helped select the model car to buy, is very happy with the choice. Our previous vehicle, btw, was a 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid. So, we were both partial to Ford.

Let’s just call it a lifted Focus. Ford messed up the exterior with prior generation and made it worse with this version. The boxy one looked good. Too bad

The engine is an ackens cycle engine? Whats so special about that

Atkinson and Miller cycles. Atkinson cycles are suitable for hybrids as the lack of low end torque is backed by an electric motor. Though it all depends on your philosophy on engine design.

Jolly Green You’re right, an Atkinson cycle engine would be great in an i3. Though BMW’s philosophy puts more emphasis on performance and dynamics than efficiency.

Toyota has already won the hybrid game. This dude is a joke. He tried to make it look like a Ford or Honda have better hybrids. Go to any big city and nowadays Prius are taxis. Because Toyota hybrid is reliable. Toyota hybrid is perfect mechanically, this Ford will be trouble city. Go for RAV-4 for happy life.

Toyota has done a terrific job, no doubt. They've nailed the hybrid market. Besides the Rav4 hybrid fuel sensor problems they've been durable and trustworthy. The escape does a lot of things well enough to at least consider it, time will tell on the reliability. I've had a 2010 Escape since new! It hasn't missed a beat.

Paul M+ NO. Case open! RAV4 Hybrid are having problems filling up, you didn’t mention that. Many people have had issues with their RAV4 regarding the fuel tank. So please rethink your words. Also, the RAV4 doesn’t even come CLOSE to the Escape in terms of tech, it doesn’t even have heads up display and the escape does. It even parks itself.
