"Motown Deep Cuts""The Marvelettes When You're Young And In Love" Alternate Version w/ Spoken Intro
Here is an alternate mix/version of the Marvelettes' 1966 hit, "When You're Young And In Love." Consider it an example of how Motown worked, re-worked and re-worked the records that were up for release. Those records were primed to become HITS.
This mix features a spoken-word intro by lead singer Wanda Rogers. It also reveals that the producers considered having the song's title sung over the intro by the ladies (Wanda, Gladys, Katherine). Spoken-word intros and passages were a signature production element on records produced by James Dean and William Weatherspoon. Their hit for Jimmy Ruffin, "What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted," was originally recorded with Jimmy performing a monologue over the introduction but it was then decided to omit it on the final mix. Many other Jimmy Ruffin productions with Dean/Weatherspoon also feature Jimmy performing a spoken passage ("Farewell Is A Lonely Sound," "I've Passed This Way Before" and others).
We are also treated on to an extended fade out. It's nice to hear Katherine, Gladys and Wanda rockin' out here, and for the record, they're singing the "When you're young and in love" part while The Andantes back them, singing "Young and in love," ad infinitum. This mix was a bonus found on the 2011 box set, "Forever More: The Complete Motown Albums Volume 2."
