I used to have a lot of WNEW jingles on my channel as well as an air check of the final few minutes of WNEW but someone bought the online rights to the jingles and was filing copyright claims on everything WNEW. I ended up with two copyright strikes and would have lost my channel if I hadn't been paying attention and deleted everything before KZfaq had a chance to hit me with a third strike. One of the strikes was for the complete song of the Milkman's Matinee by Les Brown which I'm sure they didn't own the copyrights on but I wasn't going to fight it. I used to go to bed to the Milkman's Matinee every night and loved when the news was ending and the first trumpet notes of the intro would start just after midnight. Thanks for posting these. I recognize a few of them from my collection but these are far better quality as most of mine were recorded off air.

I'm sorry to hear about the turmoil you went through! I would have loved hearing that aircheck and the jingles. I've come to realize, it's really like Russian Roulette as far as getting hit with copyright claims- I once had a Paul Petersen song that was up for several years, then out of the blue, it got hit with the copyright claim. Sometimes, you'll find something you got pegged for can get by on someone else's channel. I'm not sure how that works, but I'm glad you told me about your situation so that if I suddenly find this has been pulled down, I won't be surprised.

Lol! Sometimes I'm posting things in the middle of the night and it doesn't occur to me to mention it as well on Facebook. I gotta say, doing these, spending time assembling everything, it gives me a lot of time to really appreciate these artists, and I've been getting a deeper appreciation for Cal's approach to these songs. She's something of a Cool Cat; hers is the mastery of understated elegance, but with just enough of a tinge of the Blues. The one performance that is rather uncharacteristic is "Let Love Live" where she takes on a surprisingly tougher all-out delivery. There will be more of these mono/stereo deals for The Velvelettes on the horizon. And I have an idea for gathering and tying together the group's singles in a special playlist that I think you'll appreciate. But that's a little way off in the future...

Could be. I think the composer of these was Jodie Lyons who was one of the best and most creative composers/arrangers in the industry. There's a CD that talks about the history of PAMS and a section of it plays snippets of music that inspired a few jingles - one was a Ray Charles song - so it very well could be that some of the Hanna-Barbera cues may have influenced some jingles here.

The Marvelettes really outdid themselves on this one. For a group with so many great tunes to begin with, this song marks a translation in their sound: from their lighter more playful tunes to a much more serious driven groove. This song in particular stands out with a sound that has never really been approached since, just nothing else like it❤️❤️❤️

Yes! I've always felt that was an astonishing record/song for the group. It's interesting that this is kind of part of a trilogy of similar, dark, harder-edged songs that came out around the same time: this one, "Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead" and Martha and the Vandellas' "You've Been In Love Too Long". But "I'll Keep Holding On" is a rather sinister piece of business. I agree with you - that this was given to the Marvelettes, even recorded twice with the 2nd music track flown to NY so Wanda could get those vocals done ASAP- the company apparently was high on getting this tune out on radio immediately. It also says William Stevenson and Ivy Jo Hunter saw that the group could handle something this mature and adult. Honestly, this is Wanda doing some serious stalking and she had to sound sexy doing it. I like that Stevenson and Hunter felt this was a record the group was ready for. And you make a great point - what other song at Motown covered this kind of ground? Except "The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game" only, minus the hard rocking edge, and "The Stranger" - and interestingly, both by the Marvelettes.

It has an interesting history. I like it but I had no idea it had been done before by another vocalist at Motown. Smokey did a really good job of retrofitting it and outfitting it with a few crucial overdubs. Paul definitely brought out every last bit of potential the song would ever have. The original singer, Mickey McCullers, just didn't seem able to perform in the studio and ended up giving a rather flatline performance on his recording of this. But the best rendition of this has to be Brenda Holloway's; and it's surprisingly good considering her version was done in California.

Yeah, the sound on this is something I always wondered about. The drums sound a bit "blunt." I'm wondering if the music was recorded first on Motown's 3-track machine, then bumped up to the 8-track machine later for this recording. Could be Benny on the drums- there is someone here who has an incredible ear for the Motown drummers' styles and I think he told me who it was on this some time ago. Hopefully, he'll chime in here.

Right, that's exactly what I put in the description as well as the pinned comment - the stereo mix heard here IS from the S264 vinyl LP. The site "Don't Forget The Motor City" lists only an electronically channeled stereo mix on the "16 Original Hits" album, which I have as well as the CD of the album, which I used the first time. Then I got the S264 to use , which is listed on the DFTMC database as "stereo" - and while the album does have a slightly different sound from the other sources, I'm guessing the album is still electronically processed. But it's included here for everyone's consideration.

To anyone interested, here is why the vocals for these jingles are uniquely harmonized - unique for Series 27 and 28. This is part of a discussion thread on the ReelRadio site and Tracy Carman of the Media Preservation Foundation provides the answer: From: Tracy E. Carman, MPF ([email protected]) Monday, August 28, 2000 at 04:24:54 I'm sure Don Worsham will comment later, as there is text about these series 27 jingles in the draft of his HISTORY OF JINGLES book. Those of you jingle history buffs will note that almost ALL of the Series 27 pkgs syndicated are sung in unison (i.e. not harmonized). The PD of KXOA wanted a 'different' sound, so he asked PAMS (and Jodie Lyons) to harmonize the cuts. The result is unique and distinct. The four vocal styles Jodie adapted at Futuresonic and later brought to PAMS were the Kirby Stone Four, Hi-Los, McGuire Sisters, and Four Freshmen.
