This is by special request. In talking about Motown's mono and stereo recordings with a fellow KZfaqr, this record came up and it was he who pointed out something interesting. I think I was aware that there were two different versions of ๐™„ ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™–๐™ง ๐˜ผ ๐™Ž๐™ฎ๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ฎ, but the only difference I was aware of was on the fade out - one version has Diana Ross singing the phrase "๐˜ฝ๐™–๐™—๐™ฎ, ๐™—๐™–๐™—๐™ฎ, ๐™„ ๐™๐™š๐™–๐™ง ๐™– ๐™จ๐™ฎ๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ฎ" pretty much in the same register as she had from the start, while another version seemed to feature an edit where you hear her going up a notch and singing that phrase with a bit more urgency and euphoric passion.
But, there's another slight variation that occurred with ๐™„ ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™–๐™ง ๐˜ผ ๐™Ž๐™ฎ๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ฎ which reveals that there were actually ๐™ฉ๐™ฌ๐™ค vocal takes for Diana's lead. Again, the variations between the two are so slight that the casual listener - and even one with a keen set of ears - might not notice it. Apparently the mono album and mono single/45 uses one vocal performance while the stereo album mix uses a different vocal.
But there's more: the stereo version of the album, ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™ˆ๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ฌ๐™ฃ ๐™Ž๐™ค๐™ช๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐˜ผ ๐˜พ๐™ค๐™ก๐™ก๐™š๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ค๐™ฃ ๐™Š๐™› 16 ๐™Š๐™ง๐™ž๐™œ๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™–๐™ก ๐˜ฝ๐™ž๐™œ ๐™ƒ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™จ ๐™‘๐™ค๐™ก๐™ช๐™ข๐™š 7, uses a stereo mix that features the vocal take used for the mono LP and 45 mix. This was also the version used on 1976's ๐™ˆ๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ฌ๐™ฃ ๐™Ž2-663 ๐˜ฟ๐™ž๐™–๐™ฃ๐™– ๐™๐™ค๐™จ๐™จ ๐˜ผ๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™๐™๐™š ๐™Ž๐™ช๐™ฅ๐™ง๐™š๐™ข๐™š๐™จ ๐™‚๐™ง๐™š๐™–๐™ฉ๐™š๐™จ๐™ฉ ๐™ƒ๐™ž๐™ฉ๐™จ (the Blue Album). And there's still more! For the 2012 Expanded Edition CD set of the ๐™„ ๐™ƒ๐™š๐™–๐™ง ๐˜ผ ๐™Ž๐™ฎ๐™ข๐™ฅ๐™๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™ฎ album, Hip-O Select featured a brand new stereo mix of the mono LP/45 vocal mix. Good. Shall we press on then?
Presented here are ๐™–๐™ก๐™ก the mixes described above. If you don't have the stamina for it, or if you are a very casual listener, you are free to break away after the first part of this video. In the 1960โ€™s the FM radio stations such FM WNEW were broadcasting in stereo. When they played I Hear a Symphony by the Supremes, it was different from the either my stereo album or mono single version. I couldnโ€™t find that version anywhere. Along comes the 2012 Hip-O Select release and there it was, excluding the few chords extended at the beginning, it was identical. There must have been a Motown special mix made just for the FM radio stations.

On the radio back then in the Mesozoic era, we did not hear Ross doing that slight harmony at the very end of the fadeout. Let's just say how great Mary and Flo sound and what a disservice to them it is that they're turned down so far in some of those stereo mixes. Those original mono mixes we heard on the radio are what made the group so successful and famous. Ironically, later we'd often hear the background vocals better on higher quality stereo albums (simply because the quality of sound was better). As for that final 2012 mix: it's heaven--even with Ross's ridiculous cooing during the bridge. She sounds great, M & F sound great (Flo the muscle of the original sound), and it's a joy to hear the instrumentation we'd never heard.

@@Branner Right. Being that radio only played the mono 45s, it would have only been the teenagers (or parents) who bought the stereo LP who would have heard that slight variation in Ross's vocal at the fade out. From what I've gathered, the stereo albums were a buck or two more than the mono albums so most just got the mono LP. Interesting that you mention the "cooing" we get to hear Ross doing on the instrumental bridge. These new mixes on the current CDs allow us fans to get a glimpse into recording sessions that we never had before. Sometimes we hear the singers when they may have been feeling their way through a song or vamping on a riff they probably knew was going to be cut on the final release. That's one thing we'll never know fully since that calls for knowing the operation of someone's mind. You bring up great points for discussion!

@@Tomovox_PAMS_Radio_JIngles As do you. Ross was often only given two or three takes, so they probably used the best of the best take. The real killer was "Nothing But Heartaches." As a kid, I was at a neighbor's who must have had the stereo album (More Hits) : suddenly the song was going on longer than I'd ever heard. That was the first time I became aware that there were different versions at times between mono and stereo.

@@calvinguile1315 I have a confession: I used to just lay on the floor staring at Flo's expression on the album cover as the album played. I mean, Mary and Diana are pretty and awesome and beautiful but Flo was next-level. Her expression here is like a mix of angelic serenity yet there is a Detroit Fierceness there too. @@Tomovox_PAMS_Radio_JIngles I listened to the track again, plus an earlier Mike Douglas program where โ€œBack In My Arms Againโ€ was being introduced. It's obvious a live band is performing on the shows. The balance of the music is loud and brassy. But for the new songs, the instrumentation sounds different. Motown was strategic with its TV appearances. When a song was new, it had to sound like what was on the radio. For show tunes and older hits, it didn't matter as much. I think Motown supplied backing tracks for the new songs, but the rest of the show had a live band. Compare these two broadcasts and let me know what you think. โ€ข โ€œThe Original Supremes on The Mike Douglas Show 1965โ€ - โ€œBack in My Arms Againโ€ was out for three weeks. Compare it to the other music from the show. The performance starts at 8:29. โ€ข โ€œsupremes mike douglas show.โ€ - The show opens with โ€œBack in My Arms Againโ€ (with show tune treatment). By this time, the song is older and can have a different arrangement. The new song is โ€œI Hear a Symphony.โ€ It begins at 7:35. Compare the track to the other music being performed.
