In this episode, we have a look at and listen to the MOTU M2 USB audio interface. An audio interface allows you to record professional level XLR microphones into your computer and play back your computer’s audio to high quality external powered speakers or headphones. We cover the features of the M2, what you can expect with microphones like the Shure SM7B, how to use the loopback feature, and much more.
If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses at school.learnlightandsound.com including processing dialogue audio in Adobe Audition and DaVinci Resolve/Fairlight, recording sound, how to use the Zoom F4, F6, F8, and F8n, and how to get the most from the Sound Devices MixPre series of recorders. Our latest course is Sound for Live Streaming with the ATEM Mini.

Great Seeing you Curtis. I have been very busy with the Church. Wanting to be a full time Engineer for them. Going again early this Sunday for Sound Check. This Interface is very cool. I recommend this interface since day one. I use the Ultralite Mk.4 and love it. Listening to you now on it. Another great review video. Keep up the great work. I love this interface very much. Build is not quite as solid as my Ultralite mk.4 but it is a cheap device, but my Focusrite Solo is like a tank, and the knobs are solid. No wobble at all. By the way I have a Choir singer in my church that used to work for Focusrite. The Lord finds me cool things and people to be around. Thanks again Curtis.

This is my first and current audio interface. Purchased it along with the Shure SM7B with a CloudLifter as well all a few months ago. Sound quality from the Blue Yeti USB to this is night and day difference. The Sm7b is incredible with everything no complaints. Did alot of research and was going towards the Scarlett 2i2 but glad I returned it and got the Motu M2 as the Reviews seem to favor the M2. With the Cloudlifter connected with SM7B I'm around the 2 o'clock position for Mic Gain. Also my Sennheiser HD 650s work Great with this for Monitoring along with using it as a interface for the computer so I can listen to music etc. Get this if you want a Great entry level audio interface. @@curtisjudd Me 3. Couldn't find many other reviews aimed at my use case. Quick question. Can the Mix-Pre3 II or Zoom F6 do everything this can (and more). Would those two be good as an audio interface/pre amp for Powered Studio Monitors? Thanks
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 жыл бұрын
@@kartikeyabhalla6358 I don't see the ZOOM or MixPre field recorders as a great everyday fit as audio interfaces. The ZOOM F6 in particular is a pain because you have to menu-dive every time you use it to put it into audio interface mode. And unless you go with the MixPre-10, you don't have any balanced outputs for those monitors. So then you'd need a stereo DI box which adds expense and adds clutter to your desk. I'd go with a dedicated audio interface like the M2.

I love my Motu M4, it's been fantastic. Running on Windows 10, no issues at all. The only thing that happens to me once in a great while is that the audio will occasionally play back a little faster than it should (on say a youtube video), and I just restart it and it doesn't happen again. This only happens after a complete reboot of my entire system, no other issues to report. I couldn't be happier with it, rock solid.

When that happens, I just flick it back off/on again and restart the video, then it never happens again while in use. It's such a quick thing that it doesn't bother me. Seems to only happen with youtube once in a while. I haven't heard of this happening to anyone else. so it could be something to do with my PC and/or audio drivers or something. @@arash5550 I haven't heard of a hum issue with it before, but have heard of many folks having issues with windows. I'm on windows, and noticed a couple of my USB ports don't work well with it, mainly old USB 2.0 ports. I was really worried about it not being compatible too, so I bought it from Amazon in case I needed to return it. I've had a couple other interfaces in my day, like a scarlett 2i2 and and old audio technica interface, and they both had their little quirks too. I have had the M2 for some months, and I like it in a lot of ways, except I really wish it wasn't bus powered. I used a longer cord for a while and was getting crackling noise out of my speakers / headphones. I contacted Motu and they told me to go back to the (far too short) stock cord. Thanks, Curtis! I really like the Motu M2, but one thing I miss from the Scarlett Solo that it replaced, is the option to record as 1 channel, when using 1 microphone, at least in Windows ("Format not supported by the device"). I can choose Mono recording in my usual DAW, but not in one of the programs that I use for work - so the Motu ends up recording to one side only, and I have to fix it later. The workaround, weirdly, is to choose Loopback as the mic while recording, although I don't really understand why that works.

@@curtisjudd The app I have, that records a single microphone from the Motu M2 as "1 side only" audio, is Camtasia -- which I use to make my employer's KZfaq videos. Fortunately (1) Camtasia can mix it down to mono after recording, so I don't need to export it to a DAW for just that, and (2) anyway I most often record the audio first in the DAW, then import it to Camtasia, and use Camtasia to make and edit screen recordings for the video part. So the M2's lack of its own "1 channel" option is not a deal-breaker, just something to work around . I use the M2 with a Shure SM7B and Cloudlifter, and have been happy with it. Hi again, Curtis. You answered a few of my questions regarding the Vocaster 2 recently. Just wondering how this unit stacks up to the V2 for pre-recorded podcasting. Again, no live-streaming, and I usually add bumper music and sound effects in post. So, no need for on-board effects. I'm specifically interested in hearing your thoughts about the quality of the pre-amps in both, as well as if the Vocaster 2's inclusion of the camera TRS output is enough of a feature to tip the scales in its favor. Also, does the Motu offer any voice sculpting in its software? I know you didn't really care for the Vocaster 2's four pre-set voice effects, but I was wondering if the Motu improves on the V2 in this regard. Again, another terrific review here. You're among the best at what you do, Brother. Cheers.

One has to be careful about the fine print on 32Bit Float devices! Some record wide dynamic range, impervious to gain staging mistakes or unexpected loud noises, and other's don't - usually without mention on the box or in adverts, when they don't support wide dynamic range.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 жыл бұрын
Best to assume that nothing supports wide dynamic range unless they specifically state that they do. And the manufacturers who do use multiple ADCs to support wide dyanamic range should not call this feature "32-bit float". That confuses the issue further.

That's a great audio interface!!! The only downside i can see is the build quality...I saw many videos describe issues about knobs, xlr inputs, phantom power issues... I like Motu products, i was on way to buy the M4 but i think finally i 'll go for Audient ID14 MKII.

I've had the M4 for about 2 months, and can say the build quality is excellent. Every knob feels exactly the same, and all buttons are flattened to the same level. No issues with build quality at all. In fact, no issues at all period. Love it.

Hello, how are you, friend? I have seen many videos of yours, but some things have not been clear to me yet, and I am about to buy an audio recorder for my film projects ... I am looking for something professional at low cost ... no more than 700 dollars ... I am among the tascam DR-701D, Zoom H6, which would be a better option or which ones would you recommend if there is another? I want to do a web series and a low budget movie! Greetings

Hi Gilicod Films. Hmm, I'm not a huge fan of either of those two recorders. With your $700 budget, I'd be more likely to look at a used ZOOM F4 or a ZOOM F6.

@@curtisjudd I saw many zoom f6 reviews and I want to buy it ... now I have only one doubt ... does it come with a preamplifier (Preamps) or do I have to buy it separately?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 жыл бұрын
@@gilicodfilms Yes, the XLR inputs have preamplifiers. So you do not need a separate preamp.

How does the M2 compare to the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, which is a little cheaper?
@GregMalleus
@GregMalleus 3 жыл бұрын
One thing that is different is the Focusrite 2i2 does not have the loopback input. This is only available on the 3rd gen 4i4 and greater models.

I haven't used the Scarlets, but I like that there is at least a somewhat useful meter on the M2. And the loopback can be helpful.

Excellent review! Sold mine due to quite poor build quality, unthoughtful ergonomics, and marginally useful LCD meters. The sound quality was ok though.

Hello, I'm thinking of buying this sound card, but when I saw the comments on amazon, I started to get scared. There are many reviewers who say that the product deteriorates within 2 months. Can you help me with this? I watched your video 10 times and searched all the details. I don't want to buy this product and join the people who have problems right away. I would be very happy if you could help me about the duration of your product experience and the problems you have experienced in use. Thanks.
