Beautiful. I respect how rough and ready this was (no registration keys on the rubber mold or mother mold edges) but still pulled a really tight looking cast. That's just inspiring dude!

I've been wanting to do this for a long time. Thanks for explaining the process. You can use the same mold using concrete. A friend of mine used plaster instead of fiberglass and he used to make garden sculptures and statues. Cool. 💀

I had to make over 130 smashable skulls for a play. I of course went the cheap route (given the tight budgets of theatre) with plaster. I thought for sure when I saw you smash that skull you were doing it for the same reason... pleasant surprise to see a what you've done with these! :) Great work as always!

Could concrete be used in this type of mold, and if so, how many would it cast before starting to degrade?
@thedarkpower
@thedarkpower 5 күн бұрын
Yes it could. For something this small I'm not sure how well it would pick up the detail, but you'd get something. Generally moulds can do about 40-50 casts before they start degrading if resin is used. I've not tried concrete so I'm not sure if that would change if concrete was used.

Love it! I sculpted a small skull (between the size of a golf ball and a baseball) and I am wondering what is the best method to make a mold of it for casting? 1. Place in a cup and pour resin in the cup? or 2. two part mold of L and R sides similar to this video... ?
@thedarkpower
@thedarkpower Жыл бұрын
The easiest way would probably be to attach it to a board, hot glue some foam board around it to create a surround and then pour the silicon.

I bought a decorative skull and noticed it had a little weight to it. On the very bottom of the stand (it’s a skull and little bit of spine on a stand) there is a little hole. What material could this be made from? I feel the little hole is a clue on how it was made.

If it's mass produced I'd imagine it's a blown plastic, maybe abit like a drinks bottle. If it's hand made it could me roto cast polyurethane.

Hi Lianne, if I understand correctly I think the method in this video should work. You could either mould a half skull sculpture or mould a full skull and then cut it in half.

Haha, it's easier to work in smaller batches rather one one large batch. Plus those small cups don't have any edges moulded into them like some of the larger ones, which makes them ideal.
