Most people don't recognize that this movie is a satire. With the frenetic movements, sound effects, and the tragic ending that ends with a death.❤

Funny fact: you kept asking when the characters took acid, but back in 1900 the beverage Absinthe (the bottle with the green Kylie Minogue fairy) was thought to be a hallucinogenic substance! So the movie was playing around with that idea - they drink the green drink, and then everything goes BONKERS. :)

Fun facts: Toulouse Letrec was a real person in history (John Leguizamo's character). He had a condition, and when he was young broke a leg and it stopped growing, and ended up breaking the other a different time which is the cause of his short stature. He also was the artist for the Moulin Rouge posters. Two actors in Moulin Rouge are also in Van Helsing, but you'd never recognize them. The Duke is the same actor that plays Dracula, and Audry is the monk sidekick (Also plays the narrator in 300).

The original version of Lady Marmelade came out in 1974 and was by the group Labelle. Diamond Dogs is a reference to the David Bowie album of that name also released in 1974.

fun fact, it was shot at fox studios Sydney, my father was a key builder and that bloody elephant was in my backyard for YEARS! good to see this movie is finally catching the algorithm. this movie Romeo and Juliet and strictly ballroom are all intertwined, with sets, actors (Romeo and Juliet has a very young Paul Rudd and Miriam margoyles) the mum in strictly is Marie in this film, and the "lamour" coke sign is in all 3, there were only 2 made, full billboard size signs, 1 is in fox studios, and the other (from this but only the lettering was used outside christians room) is still in my backyard...

Well easiest one to check out for Marilyn Monroe is ‘gentlemen prefer blondes.’ That one is the movie diamonds are a girls best friend is from. As for the acid like scenes, well proper absinthe made people hallucinate, among other things. So the reason why it’s so weird and chaotic is they are infact tripping out lol. The entrance of her kind of slows it all down so it’s possible he just ended up falling for her so quickly not only cos he was out of his mind but she brought some relief from the crazy trip he was having lol.

One of my fave movies of all time! I'm going to see the touring stage version soon! I'm sure other people have said, but if you're interested in Baz's style, check out "Strictly Ballroom" and "Romeo + Juliet" by him. This movie and those two make up his "Red Curtain" trilogy. He said Strictly Ballroom told the story through dance, R+J through word, and Moulin Rouge through song ❤

Also, for a Marilyn Monroe movie, I would say to do Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (the song is actually from that one) or Some Like It Hot. And I am pretty sure this movie made me realize pretty young that I was bi from Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor lol so no judgement on the bit of thirst

This is one of my favorite musicals (along with Rent and Sweeny Todd). If you want to see a very xrated movie with Nicole Kidman, try Eyes Wide Shut. Otherwise some other good Nicole Kidman movies are The Others, Bewitched, and Stepford Wives. I agree with other people commenting that you should check out Strictly Ballroom and Romeo + Juliet (a really young leonardo di caprio). Its my favorite version of R+J. I went and saw it 5 times in theaters when it came out. Skipped school one of those times just to see it again.

Marilyn - The Prince and the Showgirl - I haven't seen many, but this one made me fall in love with her when I was a kid. Baz - if you like his super-creative style of mixing famous songs into traditional stories, Romeo + Juliet is also very, very good and featured 2 young superstars who would have long and illustrious Hollywood careers. Musicals in general I tend to loathe with a passion because (ironically) typically the music is just plain terrible. Yet you have already done 2 of the 5 I actually like (DWL & MR). 🤯 Chicago is another one that is good, so I echo that suggestion. I think this is peak Kidman. She was already past the prime of her youth by MR, but she (a lot like Marilyn) was now finally a very-good-to-great actress after having started her film career as a pretty face only. You killed me with your Hamilton comparisons where you seemed to imply Baz copied Miranda...instead of completely the other way around... (hot take: Hamilton is the most overrated 'musical' of all time) And most stunning of all, nobody in the comments has mentioned that MR is a modernization of Verdi's La Traviata, the most popular opera of all time (still sells out regularly 170 years after being written). The genius of updating the centuries old (and widely known) story was the songs/music combined with the stunning and rich visuals. Baz Luhrman was the Wes Anderson of his era (with probably David Lynch before that) - the director with the most unique and easily identifiable style that fans adored but lots and lots of people never really "got." I say Thank Goodness that there are at least some directors with creative minds that don't bow to the soul-sucking mindlessness of the Big Studios.
