A landscape scene of the Mount Fuji and some nature around with various traditional Japanese Kumiko patterns.
One goal of this project was to design a decent large panel with small triangles inside, enough to give a good resolution but also with sufficient space inside to work the patterns.
There are 8 Kumiko patterns in the scene, all from different wood types, with different natural colors, like walnut-brown, pear-pink, mulberry-yellow, maple-white and so on, each used at its best to represent the landscape items.
■ For the design I've used this fantastic web app created by Douwe www.kumikodesigner.com/
■ A good reference in Kumiko making are these books from Des King:

Just this morning I was cutting strips for a hexagonal grid. I kept thinking, 'wow, my fingers are so close to the blade', and 'wow, thank goodness for my SawStop' - as if this is the sole means of staying safe. Then I saw your support bar for keeping the stock flush against the fence. So simple, yet...so clever. I made one immediately after. Thank you for showing so much of your process.

Thanks! Good to help! But I use that only on that side, when I move up, to the reverse angle I cannot use it, because I have to eyeball the mid point of the cut, gently press it L-R. And also I dont have enough space there, I was stupid to make the sled short. I wanna disassemble it soon to make some more slots and I will bring that fwd fence back to make room for a stick like that and see how it goes

Extremely accurate work, as seen in the last shots towards the end! Adrian, you seem to use your low angle smoother in almost every video for almost all tasks requiring planing (except this video haha). Do you find it to be as versatile as you make it look?
@AdrianPreda
@AdrianPreda 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Good observation :) Usually for planing those strips I use both the LA and Jp one, but here I shown only the kanna since it's a japanese project. I use them both here, one for rough and one for final, depending on the particular wood species and weirdness of the grain, sometimes the kanna works better on last. Because I do a lot of small work and use a shooting board I found the LA plane more suitable for this. I have in plan to get a bevel up one as well, probably the custom planes from veritas, a 4 1/2 or 5

Great video, Adrian. Your Kumiko landscape looks very beautiful! 👍🏻 It's a shame that the books (by Des King, Kumiko Volumes 2 and 3) are only available in English. 😭 The block of wood where you beveled the wood pieces with the chisel. Could you please introduce the angles and how wide and deep the grooves are? 🤔 Have a nice weekend. 🙏🏻
@AdrianPreda
@AdrianPreda 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gunter! The blocks have 8mm wide groove (same as the strips), and depth is not critical, a little more than strip thickness. Angles used here are 15, 30, 45, 60 and 75. Also 90
