I too know how you feel about getting to travel, to all these wonderful places. I was raised by good parents, that never took a vacation in the 58 years they were married. I had not went anywhere in my early years, until I was able to take myself, and it is not like I am a world traveler, but I have been to all forty eight lower states, and almost all the national parks in those states, and many of the national monuments including Mount Rushmore. I look back and think that, in my wildest dreams as a kid, would I have been able to visit the treasures this country holds. If anyone dreams of traveling, do it now, do not wait until you retire, for I know many people that missed their opportunity, by waiting and their health prevented them from following their dreams.

I don’t think you got “too heavy” with your emotions. Destinations like this can be overwhelming and I think you are fortunate to be able to visit sights like this. My family and I visited Mount Rushmore 3 years ago, it was a misty day and at times we couldn't see it at all. But when the mist cleared I had a hugely emotional moment. I'm not American, I don't live in America, but seeing that awesome achievement that celebrates the achievements of some of the guys that have helped shape that great country just choked me up.

Visited here the week end after 911. My wife and I needed to go somewhere that represented our country. It is only about an eight hour drive from our home. We called cousins from Colorado and met them there. It was an incredible and emotional experience, Made even more emotional after what had just happened in our country. I remember sitting in the observation room on a bench next to an elderly man. He was with a tour group. I asked him what he did before retirement and he said he was a United Airlines Pilot. He started to cry and said something to the effect that these terrible people had tarnished his great profession and our country. I remember saying something like: they did not tarnish your profession or our country they tarnished themselves. This terrible moment in our history will only strengthen our resolve and bind us together.

Beautiful visit to a great monument. I appreciated your candor and honesty showing your emotions. I had a similar experience at the Grand Canyon 8 months ago. I've seen pictures and videos like everybody has, but I wasn't ready for the emotional experience that washed over me as I stood at the railing and looked a mile deep into the canyon. I literally had to wipe tears from my eyes it was so awesome.

My grandma told me the story of she, her mother, and father climbing the stairs to the top of Mt. Rushmore. Her father was a detective and flashed his badge at the workers who allowed them to climb the stairs at the top. She said they were all sore the day after climbing those stairs. She talked about a room at the top that was going to be a time capsule with things put inside like a car, kitchen equipment, furniture, and such. It was to be opened in 100 years she said. I didn't know it had a name-Hall of Records. Thanks for including that. I went about 20 years ago, and it was emotional, so I understand your feelings. It was also raining at the time so it looked like the presidents had runny noses. Thanks for doing what you do!
