The Mount Washington Cog Railway is the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway. It is the second steepest rack railway in the world, with an average grade of over 25% and a maximum grade of 37.41%. The railway is approximately 3 miles long and ascends New Hampshire's Mount Washington's western slope beginning at an elevation of approximately 2,700 feet and ending just short of the mountain's summit peak of 6,288 feet.

Thanks for taking me home. I remember when I was alot younger we would hike up the mountain and take the train back down. They were coal burning trains and the soot and cinders blew everywhere. Alot of the times we were allowed to sit out on the back if the train was full or it was the last one down at night. Those were the good old days for sure and if I get back to NH I will ride this again.

I remember climbing to the summit of Mt. Washington in June, 2009 and timing the climb with the arrival of the Cog train. It was hilarious to see a group of Harley bikers with their wives exiting the quaint passenger train...

I like the old-timey conductor on the old-timey train checking his smartphone... Was on this railroad when I was a kid in the 60's. We got stranded on top of the mountain for a couple of hours because on the way down, a brake had come loose and lodged itself against the wheel of the carriage. Looks like they've switched to oil in the years since I was on. When I was on, they were still using coal.

Our last visit was a long time ago. It was the last day before the old station burned down in a lightning storm. The train was coal powered and the cinders were always getting in the passenger car. The weather was beautiful on the way up and miserable rain on the way down,

So, how does a steam engine work when going down the mountain? Is the driver's job to give it just enough power (as if it's going up), so that the power of the train is simply fighting gravity and allowing for a "controlled slide" down the hill, if you will?
@BMMEC6000
@BMMEC6000 3 жыл бұрын
No. It’s called a cog railway for a reason you know. There are gears on the underside of the locomotive that help it go up the second steepest incline in the world and back down again

I mean it cost a lot of money to go up the second steepest incline in the world as well as the operating cost and everything else. Also so what if the locomotive doesn’t burn coal. It’s still powered by steam isn’t it?! It’s still a “steam breathing giant” even though it’s not half fueled by coal.
