Great to see. We tried Lion Head in 1967, after getting closed out by avalanches on the other ridge. MUCH MORE snow back then...snowshoes a MUST, until crampons above tree line. We spent 8 days at -35F, same kind of winds. There was no construction on the trail that I recall, but not much of a trail either....leather boots, wool knickers, open-net underwear from Norway...no GoPro.

John, sounds like a great week! 😎 There wasn't much snow last year, however the winter before had a ton of it on this portion of the trail. My buddy and I broke trail all the way up to treeline. My first video of Mt. Washington winter hiking shows extreme winds and cold weather. You should take a peak, just click on my name and scroll down to my very first video. Enjoy

Loved this video. I first hiked that trail in 1964 when I was twelve years old - in the summer. It was 38 degrees at the summit, rain and wind, but at the base we were in tee-shirts. Fortunately we were prepared. greetings from NY state.

Thanks for watching DM. I'll bet the mountain hasn't changed much. Clothing and equipment sure has though.

It's good to see this kind of impressive effort. I probably would have stopped and turned around at the tree line.

I've been there, but not in winter. At my age I'm thinking of moving to Florida, but I won't forget New Hampshire.

Yes "Lion's Head". Congratulations on a Great Winter Trip! I climbed MT Wash many times, Sometime in the 1990's me and a friend did "Lion's Head" in late Nov/ early Dec, but it was still snow free. Once I climbed Mt Wash alone, May 1993, --70 mph winds w/ gusts of 121mph (I found out later). I felt like I could be "blown off the mountain". Only time I saw only ONE PERSON at the top, a guy from Italy who climbs the Alps. Yes, maybe a Winter trip for me some day...then again, there is always the Spring, Summer, or Fall...🙂5 STARS! --Van

I stumbled across this video. It was excellent. I want to climb Chimborazo in Ecuador after the first of the year. I can come there and climb Mt. Washington every day for about a week to prepare for the 21k high hike. Thanks for this posting. I never used crampons before. So this will be really good for training. Keep up the good work.

Many People die on Mt Washington, Be careful this time of year and turn around if it is too cold or cloudy. Clouds roll in quickly and it takes a while to get below treeline. Read about the deaths

21k feet elevation? Rember my Washington won't help at all with elevation acclimatization, it's only 6k

Best part about hiking Mt Washington in the winter is that you don't have to wait to take your photo at the summit haha

Omg it does look like a really cool trail. I was wondering: i read that the climate can sometime get extreme (crazy wind and snowstroms), that there are avalanche risks and that the climate can change quite fast. How do you manage this risk while preparing for ascent. Are meteorologic prevision usually quite precises? Since you are an experienced hiker for this trail, what kind of prevision would be a no-go for you? Otherwise, any tips for this particular hike or winter hiking in general (havent done any really yet, planning to star with some adirondacks mountains this year/early 2017, and maybe try mt washington this year or the next). Ty for answering, btw i liked the video, beautifull views.

Thanks Gullshunter. My rule of thumb when hiking in the Presidential Range is to always prepare for the worst. Some advice for new winter hikers: Start with something small. Experiment with layering at different temperatures so that you know how your body reacts to certain temps. Gradually add elevated hikes and longer outings as you get more comfortable.

Chandler, great video. I hope to climb end of April this winter. Is it too late ? I hope to have some snow so that traction won't be a problem. Also, may i know the round trip mileage if I take lion head trail.

Was this in March? So little snow! The steep section was much easier after a lot of snow to the point where I didnt really need the crampons But the rest was harder due to post holing with every step.

What is wrong with you people? Do you have a death wish? The snow is just as gorgeous on a FLAT snow shoe trail.....take advantage of that and don't become a statistic sliding down a steep hill only to 'tomato' at the first boulder.

the views on a winter summit are way superior to any flat snow shoe trail. Also mt washington winter is not that dangerous via lion head. all you need is clear skies and full face coverage and good clothes.
