If you have a mountain bike that you want to ride on the street, here is how to set up your mountain bike to be the perfect street bike with some MTB hacks. Your mountain bike makes a great street bike, especially if you’re riding in a city with a lot of curbs and potholes. Mountain bike is much more stable and safe than a road bike on rough urban roads. To set up your mountain bike to ride on the street, you will need some smooth or slick road tires, and some fenders, and you’ll need to make sure the brakes are good enough for the street as well. Slick mountain bike tires make a big difference in how fast you can go on pavement. You will also want a comfortable seat, and you want to set up the handlebars so you can sit up and see what’s in front of you. In this video I show you how I modified my mountain bike so that it is a better street bike in the city. This is a mountain bike to street bike conversion.

I just had my bikes refurbished, and I bought a couple of used ones my LBS took in on trade. My MTBs have Continental Contact City Plus tires on them. I wanted to go with the old Town & Country tire, but Conti isn't making it anymore; that's right, after decades in production, the Town & Country has been discontinued. My LBS thought that these tires were the most similar, modern Continental tires available, so that's what they fitted to my MTBs. I'm happy with them, as they're well suited to the street, bike paths, canal paths, hardpack, and an occasional meadow. My days of getting down and dirty on the trails are gone. The Contact City Plus is also ebike rated, so you know it's robust. For the kind of riding this retired guy does, the Continental Contact City Plus is a great tire. I LOVE 'EM!

It definitely makes sense to go with a lighter and sturdy street tire than riding knobby tires on the street. Keep riding!

@@hoohoohoblin definitely! I don't know if my tires are the lightest; they're e-bike rated and they're rated for 50 kph. I got 'em because they're durable and less prone to get flats. Though I carry a repair kit with me, I don't want to use it if I don't have to.

Those thick thick slicks are fantastic! I commuted for 10 years on an old Norco Pinnacle rigid frame. I had street slicks on it, Planet Bike fenders, a back rack with a bag and a good couple of lights. Worked very well for me. The mountain bike ate up the pot holes and nasty road and pathway conditions, no trouble jumping curbs and was very reliable, although not as fast as the roadies, but way more comfortable and durable than a road bike.

Looks good. I just got my first mountain bike, a GT hand-me-down from a buddy. I live in a residential neighborhood and don’t get out to the trail as much as I’d like. Those tires would be a sweet alternate setup for mine so I could capitalize on in-town riding. Thanks for sharing

The little front ring is a game changer if you are commuting in hilly cities so I agree, a mountain bike with road style tires makes a lot of sense.

Good idea if you already have a MTB you want to make upgrades to. If you just want something that’s ready to ride and super comfy, I just recommend getting a Sedona DX or a cypress, they start out at the $400-$500 range

I have a set of Kenda Kiniption street tires on my 2011 Cannondale F7. When I bought my bike, I realized that the Kenda Nevegal tires that came with it weren't going to work for me. The treads on the Nevegal tires were so aggressive and there was so much rolling resistance when riding on the streets. I knew that I was never going to do some serious trail riding on it since it only cost me $500 (entry level MTB), so the Kiniption tires were the better way to go since I was using it primarily for transportation and the smoother tread made my bike easier to ride.
@hoohoohoblin

Same thing happened to me. Standard knobby tires are terrible on the street. There are some hybrid version that have a smooth part in the middle and knobs on the sides for people who want to ride on the street and also corner in the dirt.

I got 2 herniated discs in my back so I can relate to the riding position thing. I just ordered a downhill bar for street use, just to get a bit more rise on the grips. I'm considering a suspension seat post too, like a Cane Creek Thudbuster.
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 2 жыл бұрын
That suspension seat is a good idea. Also, even a cheap full suspension mountain bike would give you a nice comfortable ride on the street as well.

IOW, IRT brakes. Go to a highly rated bike shop to get a highly rated hydro kit installed. If you want what needs the least frequent adjustments. Unless your mechanical are self adjusting.
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin Жыл бұрын
The mechanical brakes work fine, and I’ve learned how to adjust them. Unfortunately, they don’t adjust themselves. I’ve had problems with cheap hydraulic brakes, so if I was going to upgrade, I would definitely go with something that’s proven to work really well.

I have a 29er that came with hydraulic brakes and I'd already decided to change them for cable brakes, I'm riding urban but if I go on a bike trip it's more space saving to pack a couple of spare cables than a bleed kit and fluid, plus if a hose ruptures I'm not likely to carrying those. I've also just got some Thickslick comp's for a 27.5 mtb, just waiting for the new wheels to put them on. Getting back to the brakes, I have to look at it in a sense that if a brake fails it's not going to make much difference which type it is other than sorting the issue out.
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 9 күн бұрын
That’s good thinking. It’s definitely a lot easier and lighter to carry some cables than a whole bleed kit.

How do slick tires like this handle on sidewalks? There's almost NO road I can ride in my area due to high traffic levels at high speeds, so I'm on the sidewalk, like anyone else who commutes by bike around here , and I've got mountain bike tires on a front suspension bike like yours and I feel like they're slowing me down ... But at the same time , I think slick tires would perform badly on all the sidewalk cracks i'm riding over and sidewalks i'm jumping off, etc. And probably all the flat's I'd get from all the trash people leave on sidewalks around here.
@hoohoohoblin
@hoohoohoblin 3 жыл бұрын
They work great on the sidewalk. They have a lot of grip. They are also extra thick, so you don’t have to worry about getting a flat tire.
