Winter in the North American wilderness cannot be conquered. At best, it is endured. And only by those who will fight tooth and nail for the privilege of survival. Winter after bone-chilling winter, the Mountain Men have relied on ingenuity, tenacity and determination to weather the worst that the elements could bring to bear. But this season, that cold-forged mettle will be tested like never before.

"Another "high carbon" misconception involves railroad spikes. Nearly every bladesmith has made knives from railroad spikes. Railroad spikes are readily available, usually for free, they are a novel item, and they can make a perfectly useable knife. However, they simply do not contain enough carbon to make a good blade. One big misunderstanding comes from railroad spikes that are marked "HC" for "High Carbon". The problem is that what the railroads consider "High Carbon" is equivalent to what a knifemaker would call low carbon mild steel. According to specifications set forth by American Railway Engineering Association there are two classes of railroad spikes, low carbon track spikes used on straight sections of railroads and high carbon steel track spikes used on curves and switches. According to the specifications, low carbon spikes may contain no more than 0.12% carbon and "High Carbon" spikes may contain NO MORE THAN 0.30% carbon"

Making knives quickly by forge welding? Thats something you have to practice a lot, you need alot of fuel and borax isnt the magic word for success. The way to do it is the key. The fire didnt seem right, you need to be at least 2, railway spikes are a cool way to do things but not the way I would go for speed ... Take a spring leaf off your truck, its much faster, or go to the nearest scrapyard.

Well, for a hand forged one, with a story they might. In this case, the story is that he's going to use the profits to protect historic woodlands, so realistically there will be some people who will buy these because they want to help him out, not because the actual knife is worth that much. I'd say the knife in and of itself is probably worth more like about $50, but again, with the story, I bet some people will buy these. Also If you have questions about my thoughts on this feel free to respond, I'm a blacksmith and a conservationist myself so I do know some stuff.

@Glisha1 4 жыл бұрын
Highest quality wood scales? I mean, every wood is if stabilised, it is more about looks. But yeah, he is happy if he gets 50$ for railroad spike knife. But what gives the knife the price is more about complexity of crafr reather than material. Unless you go with uber steel that need nitrogen for heat treatment (after air quench) or some 1000 old tree wood scales. It is more about craft. The blade is simplest part. I make knives as hobby. Need less than 2 hours for the blade, a whole day for a handle

Those knives aren't worth the fuel and time they spent on them. They also didn't do the most important part, they didn't temper them. Next time buy some 1075. For less than 75.00 you could buy enough to make a couple dozen knives that size. Plus it's a lot easier to work. You could actually do a decent heat treat and tempering with the equipment you have there and make a real working knife. We all know this show is as fake as a four dollar bill. That's not why we watch it. But at least try to accomplish better deceptions than what you do. If you need an advisor I'm available for the right price. 😆
