Thanks, Chris! I started riding 4 years ago at age 20. First sled was a 13 Pro RMK which was considered one of the easiest sleds to learn backcountry snowmobiling on the market, but still my friends that had been riding for years could do ten times more than me, and they did it on old AC M8's and IQ's. I sucked at riding and I got stuck everywhere, and I mean everywhere, but I quickly learned. Now, 4 years later it's a good feeling listening to what you say and knowing that I constantly use the same techniques that you are explaining here. Now I can ride with ease in deep powder and do gnarly lines, which I could not do before. I feel confident while riding deep pow, and now I find myself teaching some of my friends how to be a good rider. One can watch videos for hours, but the only way to truly get good, is to get out there, and hit it.

Now I want to see the follow up with everyone on the hill.

I am 64 and introducing this sport to my grandkids. My 5.5 year old grew out of the 120 by proving he could handle the throttle while taking his 3.5 year sister for a ride and having her enjoy it. His sister got the sled and he had his first time on his new 200 last night. First thing we discussed after throttle control was the “bird on the brake”. He figured out his mom couldn’t be mad if he flipped off the brake. 😂. While I’m not a very good rider, I can teach very well so again, thank you

I've been riding for years, and I realized that I only ride with my finger on the brake going downhill not while going up. I've always relied on my clutch to slow me down when I let of the throttle going uphill. Got to try the brake.

Thank you for the awesome tips Chris! I know that I'm the odd duck but I ride a heavy but very powerful and highly modified 2015 turbo Viper MTX 1049. It's a very fun and reliable sled and it pulls your arms off on hill climbs at around 220 horsepower. My question is this.....Is the throttle and brake use different with a sled with a heavier front end? I have a 36" stance and my "A" arms are 5 inches further FWD than stock. My favorite thing to do is get on edge and carve. I also put wrong foot forward and either walk or just drag a foot on the uphill side, the only thing though is that I don't ever touch the brake! The big 4-stroke seems to lose speed very quickly by just letting off the throttle! Never have I felt a need to use the brake while on edge and I go extremely slow, have good control and seem to do really well at times on the (Non throttle side). I've found that I carve better on the left hand side and not as well on the throttle side. With the heavier front end I've found if I'm too far forward, tends to pitch up hill for some reason and I either lose it and fall off, or if I'm quick to react I'll throttle it hard and turn into the inside and do a whip 270 degree 3/4 turn to go back down hill. If I'm mid to slightly forward on the running board it tends to do much better. I really like your tip about looking further forward in the distance as well. It helps give you that plan "B" that you mentioned and gives you more options in getting where you need to go just like driving a big diesel truck down the road. So far, the big turbo Viper MTX 162 has treated me very well, I go all over the place with it and it rarely every gets stuck. Maybe it's my looking ahead habit, my experience riding 80's-90's two strokes managing inertia as a must habit, or the sheer power and thrust that it has as well as divine intervention from above! LOL For some reason this particular Viper rarely gets stuck on most group rides in deep snow and steep hills. The sled is super reliable and I water cross and jump it a lot too! Being the "White Rhino" on the mountain, I have my work cut out for me and a reputation to uphold. Yeah, it's a little more challenging with more inertia but if you have the right technique and know how to manage the thrust it handles remarkably well. My only challenge currently that I am having a difficult time mastering is initiating a sidehill when pointing down on a steep slope. Going up is easy because you slow down and can control with the throttle. Going down and counter steering gives me a weird feeling and I'm not that great at it. The greater inertia of the 4-stroke probably doesn't help either but I have witnessed a friend of mine negotiate every angle and turn going down hill with ease and he made it look so easy! I just gotta figure out what the trick is. Thank you for all that you do. I really enjoy your videos and great tips and if possible could you give me a few pointers on what I should do to better handle a higher horsepower heavier sled? Seriously wish I would have seen this before I went to the UP last Wednesday, first time riding off trail on logging roads and it’s a whole other animal. Rode for 3 days and finally started somewhat understanding what I was doing. But it was honestly probably the most fun I’ve ever had, going to sell my Harley and buy a RMK this fall, maybe next year I’ll try and take one of your trips.
