FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

I've always been fascinated by different cloud types. Lenticular clouds are rare where I live, so I enjoy seeing them on video. The video was just beautiful, with lovely scenery and beautiful skies! As I've said before; I cannot be a pilot, but I enjoy learning about how to fly. Hearing about how to correct your plane, when the wind blows you into a bad position, was cool. I never knew the wind could do that to a glider! I have a new appreciation for this kind of flying now. Can't wait for part 2!

I started flying in gliders. I got my glider private rating and then I got my power private. One day, I went up with an instructor for a lesson with a controllable pitch prop and he said, "You're a glider pilot, aren't you?" I said I was and asked him how he could tell, and he replied, "You're using the rudder pedals." Glider pilots are different.

Water flowing over a river rock continues to form a raised hump after leaving the rock. Air compresses better than water. And that is essentially wave lift. A 9,000 ft mountain "can" create wave to 40,000 ft +. Winds are usually around 60 mph so you don't circle in wave. Slow down and enjoy the elevator ride, into the head wind.

#BoseA20 Just started methodically going through your episodes and it's a real treat! This episode made me pause as the soaring conditions presented are something that just doesn't happen in the flat land of Finland. Also that landing in the next episode is just nuts with how smooth it is.

Down here in the South Island of New Zealand, we have mountain wave wind (Foehn wind) very regularly with our frequent "nor-west" wind off our high mountains. Wet and cool on the west coast, and hot and dry on the east coast! Long distance cross country gliding is very popular here! Ton's of mountain wave, rotor and turbulence to fly through when traversing up and down the island when it's blowing a strong nor-wester! Mountain flying skills are a must, down under!

Oh, the 2-33. I'm training in one right now. It's not a bad airplane it just has lots of... character. It's about as loud as a powered airplane but we don't have headsets. The radio is just a handset that can't reach the instructor seat so we never use it. The hook is under the plane so you need to hold the nose down during the tow, often times my hand is still sore after landing. And it shakes. It shakes so bad you can feel the nose flexing and the pedals moving left and right. God, I love flying.

@FlightChops
@FlightChops 8 жыл бұрын
+Mark Oda - there are many more than one take away... Hard to nail down just one... Maybe if I had to pick one, it would be the importance of co ordinated flight at all times? In a glider that can really make s difference for how well you can climb in a thermal.

Wonderful. I just revisited this episode after having my first (passenger) flight on a glider yesterday (I had forgotten you had done it). I felt very slightly queasy, but it was all ok and I know it gets better with time from my powered-flying experience. I'm not saying I'm immediately hooked, but since both my flight school and my current flight club are predominantly gliding/soaring outfits, I may actually start my glider training some time next year, and I'll certainly try to get in some more passenger flights before that. It's very exciting.

why is the Pawnee such a popular glider tow?
@DinantRiks
@DinantRiks 7 жыл бұрын
It's powerful, can climb quickly at the speeds a glider likes (around 60 knots), and can dive down quickly after the glider has released. And there are many around. However, because of maintenance costs and fuel consumption, many clubs are now starting to switch to lighter tugs, such as the EuroFox or Dynamics

I had a scary first solo in a 2-33 just last week. During aerotow we went through a huge rotor vortex and I got nervous and disconnected from the tow plane. While flying back to the airport at pattern altitude I encountered a lot of wind shear. I flew my downwind leg in a headwind causing me to lose a lot of altitude by pitching down to keep my airspeed high . I flew a very uncoordinated base to final and overshot the runway and then bounced the landing three times. Scariest day of my life, but I’m lucky to have kept flying the plane and kept my airspeed up. A video of my solo is here kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ZspoeNZ7vKyRpXk.html
