The Moustache Parakeet, also known as the Java Parrot or Red Breasted Parakeet, is a super unique parrot with what looks to be facial hair. These parrots are bossy but fun companions, but the question is, is this the right parrot for you?

We have had a male for almost 2 years now. He is free to fly around when my husband and I are home from work and he loves to sit/ride on our shoulders. He is pretty tolerant of our young grandchildren, but the grandkids are kind of freaked out by him so they don’t do much more than give him a quick kiss on the beak. He can be annoying when he wants to mooch some food but his personality is so much fun and he talks up a storm. I have to mostly agree with your analysis. We didn’t go thru much of a bluffing phase with our guy, but we are not afraid of his bites, which I think helps out tremendously. You have to approach them at all times with confidence and show them their bite/nip isn’t going to bother you and you are boss. Start target training immediately.

I have a year old moustache/derbyan parakeet hybrid :) He's such a sweetheart, loves all the attention he can get, loves being on shoulders and LOVESS kisses. He is definitely not a hands on bird, he doesn't like being touched, but he loves being on people. He didn't really have a bluffing phase that I can point out, but he can be nippy when you want him to do something he doesn't want to do, lol. He is LOUD. He will scream and scream to his hearts content, but he also talks and talks for hours! He has a pretty clear voice. It ranges from cute and squeaky to deep and robotic. He is VERY smart. He learns things VERY quickly when there are walnuts involved :) he's not hard to train to do something at all! He is a VERY hardy bird, for sure. He can crash and crash when he flies (he's gotten much better since he was a baby lol) and he will bounce back up like nothing happened! He is my first bird, my first overall real experiences with a bird, however I did years of research beforehand and felt I was ready (but are you ever ready the first time?) it was a total shock and adjustment, but he's so worth it! He also does really well with other people. I'm his favorite, but he loves being on everyone's shoulders (except for Children). He's such a delight, and I would definitely recommend one to an experienced bird owner, or a beginner who has done a lot of research :)

Our moustache is wonderful. She’s quite a quiet bird but will let you know exactly what she wants. She loves kisses and is super sociable and friendly. She’s definitely NOT a one person bird and has NEVER been aggressive.

My Moustache Parakeet is an 8 year old rescue. We have had Coco for approximately a year and a half and she is the sweetest creature I have ever encountered. When the weather is nice I take her with my when I go out. She loves to meet new people, is always eager to be held and loved on, but if she sees a child point at her and speak she will begin squeaking and chirping and spinning around in circles on my shoulder until I take her over to the child so that she can play with them and give them kisses! I've never seen a formerly abused animal so unbelievable eager to express their love! I wish people would take a lesson or two from her. Her favorite treat in the world is McDonald's french fries and she absolutely recognizes them. If you have fries and don't share, she will start flapping her wings and chirping until you hand one over. She's incredible and I really am so grateful to have her in my life. Oh and she literally walks all over my seven and a half year old pitbull Zoe, and Zoe loves it. Great video, thanks.

I've got a male mustache parrot 🦜. He is 26 years old. He sounds off if anyone comes in the driveway or comes to the door he lets me know. He is exactly right they are one owner birds. Mine tells me to Hurry up. He only likes to get on my hand when he wants to, he will bite if you aggressively come at him out of I guess being afraid of predators. He's a very smart guy. If I don't cover him at bedtime he lets me know he'll yell. He takes his bath systematically everyday and he's a very unique little bird

I've had mine for 8+ years since he was a chick. I would rate him as follows: Handalability: 2. He doesn't like being touched. He's not that playful or active. He does what he wants but spends more time watching than doing things. I have not had issues with bluffing. Quietness: 2. He's not a constant screecher but if he doesn't get what he wants he gets pretty loud and can be heard from outside the house. Don't necessarily think he's an apartment bird. Talking ability: 2. He's a male but never has really picked up many words. He whistles a lot and repeats the same phrases he always has, and his speech is generally unclear. My previous parrot (alexandrine) was a far better and more frequent talker who demonstrated understanding as well. Would say it's a hit or miss with MPs. Would not say they 'solid talkers'. I do think it depends on the bird you get. Care: 3. As you expect for a parrot. Eats fruits, veges, seed and pretty much wants to try everything. While his cage is smaller, he spends a lot of time flying out and about. He does need a lot of attention. But yes he will bite if ignored or angry. Hardiness: 5. They are very hardy birds. They have good mental constitution and can adapt well. No health issues and he has survived being lost and in uncertain situations and hasn't been stressed. We love him very much but he is definitely not fun like a conure, talkative / intelligent like an alexandrine. And I agree he's for experienced owners. He is loyal and will be around, and is bossy. I just disagree on the talking. Lastly I will say he does not care to be around other parrots. He prefers to be a solitary parrot and does not / will not interact with other parrots. If owning more than one parrot, don't expect the MP to be a friendly companion. Having said that, while he does not like not being the centre of attention, he is happy to associate with other humans. When he was lost and flew out of our home, he was found 3 days later sitting on a ladies head and talking to her.

I've had my moustache for 3 years so far, he's quite good with multiple people. In regards to sound Tiki is loud as hell. I can hear him from outside my house. You were spot on with not being handled. Moustache parrots hate being touched from what I've seen. Mine is quite happy to sit on my shoulder but hates being pat. He'll even take a nap on the lounge with me

From my own experience. Handleability: baby 3, bluffing phase 1, adult 3. He lets me touch, scratch, preen but he prefers to being left alone, though he still loves to be by your side. He bites hard. Quietness: 4, He doesn't make a sound unless he's hungry, not too loud. Talking: 3.5 good talker, but not impressive Care: 4 cause mine is very independent, not very active, he eats anything, learn to eat seeds at very young age, just have to keep an eye when they're out of the cage. Health: very very hardy Cost: 5 cheapest species in Vietnam (roughly $15) Loyalty to owner: 2 even when I raise him from a little baby, they may fly away when they have a chance. In general, he's not so passionate, absolutely not cuddle, and bossy. I spend much time playing with him everyday, but he's like "nah I'm fine, just leave me alone". He sits by my computer while I'm working for hours. He flies here and there a few times inside the house during the day. This species doesn't breed in captivity. I can only buy them at spring time every year from farmers in the central highlands of Vietnam.

My moustache loves everyone. He just can't be pet, and especially hates hands above his eye level. We never play tug of war. He's 22 and won't eat pellets. He must have fresh fruits, ice cream and carrots every day and wants to taste everything I eat. He's never seen the inside of a cage, so he thinks he's my brother. A real bargain, he's outlived 3 dog lifetimes already. He likes playing hockey.
