This is the best video on this problem on you tube by far. To walk us through the steps especially with dx which side is affected is so helpful. I have a question. When repeated the excercise do you need to do the Dix hall maneuver each time? Or just do the treatment once you know what side is affected. Thanks so much I have been dealing with this on and off for a year and a half with a floating sensation in between after a fall. Many PT appts which helped, but then it reoccurred just recently. I will follow through twice a day and see how I do after so weeks. Again thank you!
@MovementFunction
@MovementFunction 7 ай бұрын
Once you know which side is involved, you can continue performing the Epley maneuver without doing the Dix Hallpike test. If your recovery reaches a plateau and you don't continue to improve, or symptoms change, then repeat the Dix Hallpike test to see if the other side is involved.

@MovementFunction
@MovementFunction 2 жыл бұрын
@@jackthepinoynumerologistas532 , everyone is different in how long it takes to feel relief. For some, they start feeling better in a week or so, for many, it takes 6 weeks or longer of daily vestibular exercise. If the dizziness and nausea you feel during the exercises lasts longer than 20 minutes after you finish, you're pushing too hard. Decrease the reps and the speed of your movement so that you feel a little dizzy while doing them but your symptoms go back to baseline within 20 minutes of stopping. Try to be patient, vestibular rehab is a marathon, not a sprint. All the best to you!!

Hi Beth you are so kind to provide all of this information to people. Been going through all of your videos, as I had a concussion four years ago now. Since then I have had trouble consistently with the same issues. Slight dizziness/off balance feeling and a left sided intense headache. They always come together. Been through general vestibular rehab, neck physio, MRI the works. It is triggered sometimes by how I look down at my phone or while on my computer. Do you think it can it be possible this is vision related specifically? Ik so tired of going through new physios and exercise plans at this stage so wanted to see what you think. Thanks so much Gary

Hi Gary. Yes it is possible that your symptoms are related to visual dysfunction. There is a specialized type of therapy called vision therapy that might be helpful for you. It goes beyond the basics that I introduced in this video. Here is a video I found on KZfaq that might be a great place to start. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ft1kit2U073UpKs.html. Best to you!

Thank you for your vdeos. I was operated from an accoustic neuroma in June (my right vestibular nerve was cut) and my systen was really shaken by it: it took me 3 weeks to walk alone (never far from walls though) a few steps, then with walking stick. Now my balance is rather good and my PT released me but the occular vestibular reflex is not here and I have oscillopsia, me head feels heavy with everry movement. I'll try your video daily, hoping things will improved (no matter if I'm the weird one in the supermarket!)

Virginie, You're welcome and I'm so glad you found my videos! Yes, these exercises will likely help decrease your oscillopsia. Since you've already gone through a full round of PT, I imagine you'll be able to tolerate doing these exercises several times a day. I suggest shooting for 3 times/day. If that's too much to tolerate, decrease to 1-2x/day. I wish you the very best in your ongoing recovery! Keep up the positive attitude and humor, and you will see continued improvement. :)

Thanks for this and the other videos with vestibular exercises - at last someone who does more than the standard things. I have PPPD, and done a lot of VRT, but most exercises aren't challenging me any more. I have to add, I'm an leg amputee and have a stiff and paralysed arm, so some exercises are either undoable for me (I just can't stand on my leg protheses one legged). But my question is, could it be, that some exercises are just really challenging because of my amputation. Tandem Stance for example, is really difficult to me, and I'm not sure, if I need more vestibular training, so I should not advance to more difficult exercises, or if it's just because of my protheses, so I won't get much better at these things.
@MovementFunction
@MovementFunction 2 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! I'm glad you're finding these helpful. To answer your question, yes, it could be that some exercises are more challenging because of balance limitations due to your amputation. It's fine for you to advance to more difficult vestibular exercises even if the balance exercises aren't improving much. Continue working on all the exercises to the best of your ability. You might find better results from progressing the vestibular exercises seated on a cushion or pillows to reduce the stability of the surface, which makes your vestibular system work harder. I'm thinking of the VOR, eye movement and head movement exercises with eyes open and closed. I hope that helps! Good luck and all the best to you.

If these exercises feel easy - does this mean they won't be helpful? I found most of these pretty easy as in they didn't really trigger my dizziness too much, despite having dizziness problems, I wonder if it's still beneficial to do them?
@MovementFunction
@MovementFunction 2 жыл бұрын
Maja, if you can do all of these exercises at medium/fast speed without dizziness, it might be that your dizziness is not visually-induced. You might check out some of my other vestibular rehab videos and if you can still do all of the exercises without triggering your dizziness, the cause is likely not your vestibular system. Doing the exercises won't hurt but if the cause of your dizziness is something else entirely, the exercises likely won't help much.

@MovementFunction
@MovementFunction Жыл бұрын
Mike, what you describe is not uncommon with vestibular dysfunction. Your body adjusts to the movements associated with driving and has a hard time shifting back to solid ground when you stop. One thing to consider is if it is overall better or worse the more you drive. If it's better, then your system is habituating (getting used to the stimulation) and you'd do well with more of that type of stimulation (drive more). If it's worse, your system is being overloaded by the stimulation and you'd do better by backing off (if you can) and doing other movements that help you build up to driving, such as the exercises in this video. I hope that helps! All the best!

Is it common to have to go back to beginner exercises because of added dizziness while doing more. advanced exercises that you did ok before. I seem to have fallen back in my progress. Should I just continue as I can.
@MovementFunction
@MovementFunction 2 жыл бұрын
Bruce, yes, this is common with vestibular rehab. While frustrating to have to step back to easier exercises, it's usually just a speed bump. We tend to want to see linear progress with every day/week better than the last, but most people improve in steps/waves. It's common to have periods of accelerated progress (when it's tempting to overdo the exercises and daily activities) and periods that feel like a loss in progress. Yes, continue as you can and include rest breaks. You might try two days of exercises and one day off, for example, and then gradually add more days of exercise until you build back up. Also, give yourself credit for activities in daily life that involve a lot of motion and take rest breaks from those activities too. It all adds up. You'll be back to doing the advanced exercises soon... :)

Ethan, you're very welcome! Yes, this video will help relieve the nausea from visual stimulation/motion. Since your balance is good, you can do all of the exercises sitting down (with good posture) instead of standing in balance positions if you prefer. Also, you might consider other variables associated with screen exposure such as blue light filtering glasses or a blue light filter on your screens to reduce the eye strain/fatigue, which might be contributing to your nausea. @MovementFunction
@MovementFunction Жыл бұрын
Are your symptoms flaring up during and right after the exercises and then settling back down? Or do they continue to be flared up? If symptoms settle back down to your baseline within about 20 minutes of completing the exercises, that is normal. If they are staying flared up for longer than 20 minutes (approximately), then you're pushing too hard. In that case, try decreasing the intensity by doing fewer reps, fewer exercises and moving slower, then assess your body's response and adjust according to the 20-minute guideline. You might also try some breathing exercises before and/or afterward to help your body tolerate the stimulation better. Check out the videos in my breathing and relaxation playlist. They can be very helpful. bit.ly/BreathingRelaxation

life, I suggest doing the exercise slowly and then build back up. You might try using a metronome (there are many free phone apps or google metronome for a free online metronome) at 60 bpm. When the target stays in focus, then slowly increase speed.

@@MovementFunction Thank you! I had to move my head back and forth very slowly, like a turtle to stay in focus on the target otherwise it was blurry. Took a few days for severe blurred vision to get better. I have never been able to shake my head super fast in the past years. Otherwise I will miss the target and decompensate. And then the dizziness starts up again.

@@life-mm5do Try to progress very very gradually so that the target remains in focus. It looked like you asked about saccades on another video but now I can't find the comment... anytime you experience increased symptoms after the exercises that last longer than 20 minutes, it's too much. You'll still benefit from doing them at a turtle's pace, and just a few reps, building up slowly. You might do better with just a few reps and doing them a few more times per day (but not too much!) instead of trying to doing them faster or more reps per session. Your body with get used to them gradually. Brief, low intensity stimulation is still very helpful.

Hello madam is this exercise that will help me for visual addiction. I have cured the vppb for a month but there are still vestibular instabilities. But now there is still a little dizziness in the eye. Visual dependence. How many sessions I can do in the day will it help me with this exercise. Thank you very much for your answer.🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

Saad, yes these exercises help decrease dizziness related to visual stimulation. Try them 1x/day to start and if that is tolerable, add a 2nd time and then 3rd time. If that much makes you too dizzy, reduce the sessions. You're welcome and I hope these help relieve your dizziness.

@@saadkhadiri2601 You're welcome. Yes, you can do 2 or 3 sessions per day if the dizziness you feel during the exercises is tolerable. Rest if the increased dizziness lasts longer than about 20 minutes after you finish the exercises.

Does this help with mal de debarquement? If not, what exercises do you recommend?
@MovementFunction
@MovementFunction Жыл бұрын
Vestibular rehab *might* help with Mal de Debarquement syndrome. Officially, there is no specific exercise regimen that has been found to be consistently helpful for MdDS. I have seen some people benefit from vestibular rehabilitation, specifically habituation exercises that help decrease sensitivity to movement. Everyone is different... some people recover with time.
@CrystalNouveauC

@@MovementFunction are there any specific habituation exercises you can recommend?
@MovementFunction
@MovementFunction Жыл бұрын
@@CrystalNouveauC I apologize for the delay in my response. The best habituation exercises are specific to the individual. In other words, whatever movements or positions cause disequilibrium/imbalance/dizziness, repeat that movement and/or move in and out of that position repetitively. Vary the speed of movement and the amount of motion. Include variables like eyes open/eyes closed and different directions of movement. All the best!

I cannot tolerate airports. I require a wheelchair. I have been doing rehab on my own and with a therapist for 18 months but airports make me want to die. Any tips or tricks please 🙏
@MovementFunction
@MovementFunction Жыл бұрын
Dana B, this might sound very strange, but hear me out... I suggest going to the airport for short bouts of vestibular practice on a regular basis, say once/week. Since you don't have a flight, you'll need to stick with the front counter and baggage claim areas. Start small and work up gradually. For example, start by walking through the check-in area for 10-15 minutes, taking breaks to sit every few minutes as you need. Build up time gradually. Start without any luggage and add a roller bag, etc. after a few weeks. Then move on to baggage claim, walking around the carousels at the edge of the crowd, progressing to walking through the crowd after a few weeks. If this is not practical where you live, think of a place that might be similarly busy/hectic/crowded, such as bus/train station, large box store during a rush, etc. If it's the airplane ride itself that is the worst for you, try taking bus or train rides during busy times to help you get used to it. I hope this helps!

Uus it Normal to feel very dizzy from this
@MovementFunction
@MovementFunction Жыл бұрын
It is normal to feel a little more dizzy following the exercises, but the increased dizziness should go away within 20 minutes of finishing the exercises. If it lasts longer, then you're likely doing too much and it's best to decrease the reps, number of exercises, and speed of movement, until your symptoms go back to baseline within 20 minutes. Build up gradually over time.
