There are many pictures and videos of the desolation of Varosha available today. Given that no one is allowed to enter upon threat of being shot, I was wondering how these pictures have been obtained. I'm referring to the last 40 year period since the invasion. The whole thing is an awful tragedy.

Why was Varosha fenced off? I would love to see it restored again...not with all the high rises, but with the original buildings and architecture. It makes no sense to take these areas and allow a resort to go into decay and ruin.

Yes trouble started before but who made sure that this didn't escalate? Either way both sides were going to still fight each other after the independence in which it did 3 years later. Cyprus should of never tried to be a part of Greece, it shouldn't be a part of any country but it's own. And now it has suffered because of it.

@SuliemanTheGreat Makarios and Greek Cypriots did not aim to massacre Turkish Cypriots. This is a lie and propaganda. Turkey even killed Turkish Cypriots who didnt support the Turkish invasion, Faizal was doing the bidding of Turkey in Cyprus against all Cypriots. The first attack on Turkish in Cyprus was by Turkey's government organization, as was admitted by Dankdash. They were taking up arms in 1963 or even earlier in Koki, and were conspiring to attack the Government of Cyprus representatives, Turkish and Greek. Turkey is the one who destroys the lives of not only Greeks but Turkish as well. More like people were fooled, including Greeks, Americans, UK Government and Turkish Cypriots. The Turkish Cypriots chose to go to Enclaves, by their choice to make way for bombings. Information was distorted and manipulated. You were taught propaganda .

In additiion to previous UN resolutions calling for a return of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants, the European Parliament has in its February 2010 debate on Turkey repeated its own previous calls for the return of Ammohostos - making this an important factor in Turkey's possible EU accession process. Turkey has refrained from demonstrating its good faith towards the current reconciliation efforts on the island by responding to the EuroParliament suggestion - showing its continuing contempt.

It's easy to say now in retrospect what should or shouldn't have been done 60 years ago. Conditions and people's thinking was much different back then, so unless you've actually lived through such a thing you can't say it was wrong. Greek Cypriots wanted nothing different than what the rest of the Greek islands (e.g. Crete, in which Turk-Cretans outnumbered Greek-Cretans) wanted and achieved in the past.

During my last visit (about a week ago), I was talking to a Britist Ex-pat on the beach that the derelict hotels of Famagusta overlook. He didn't like the fact that I was 'allegedly' taking photographs of the hotels as this is prohibited. He said "It's OK for you. You're here for about half an hour, then you go. I live here. Two years ago they (the Turkish authorities) closed this beach because people where taking photographs." I'll reserve my sympathy for the following reasons...
@crocodeilos
@crocodeilos 11 жыл бұрын
Trouble started before independence because the Brits used their notorious (and successful, apparently) divide & conquer method. The US did not stop Turkey from anything, their concern was to prevent a war between two NATO allies (Greece-Turkey) so they made sure that the Greeks wouldn't declare war on Turkey once the latter invaded. Turkey got more than it aimed for as Famagusta had not been in their original plans-they just found it empty.

I've seen what's left of the city many times during my various visits to Cyprus. I can be seen by boat trip but the boats can only go as far as the 'Green Line'. Famagusta has to be seen by taking a jeep or minibus safari though. For this you need your Passport because you have to cross the checkpoint into 'The Turkish Republic of North Cyprus' to get to a beach where you can see the hotels up close. If you plan to visit Cyprus (Protaras area) this trip is well recommended.

Turkey based its military invasion as 'peaceful action' relying on article IV of the Treaty of Guarantee which says that in the event of a breach of the provisions (the attempt 2 alter the consitution by imputing more laws by the way of bills in the Constitution was though 2 be as such as the Constitution does not allow it) any of the guaranteing powers is entitled to take action to restore the previous to restore what was before existent.. According to Wikipedia, last Sep, the Economy Minister for Turkey said "Europe's two-faced and heartless policies and some anti-Turkish Austrian politicians have saddened us." Isn't it heartless to turn 45,000 people out of their homes? Seeing as Justice, Freedom and Security are the key points Turkey will not agree to, it's hypocrisy at its worst! The only good thing to come out of its EU membership would be the certain return of Famagusta.

It makes me sad some of the comments I'm seeing here. I presume many of you are young greek cypriots with much nationalistic sentiment. Yes, it is a shame what has happened to Famagusta, and I deplore the Turkish government for allowing it to go to ruin. However, none of this (i.e. the war in Cyprus) would have happened if it wasn't for the actions of the then Greek Cypriot president, whose actions in trying to rid Cyprus of Turkish Cypriots led to the Turkish invasion. In fact, he even had the opportunity to avoid the war, being warned by the UN to stop his genocidal policy against Turkish Cypriots before the invasion. Also do not forget there is as much suffering on the Turkish side as there is on the Greek because of this. Cyprus for Cypriots, be the Turks or Greeks

When Cyprus did get its independence it became the object of Greece's desire to unify the island with Greece (enosis). The Turks of Cyprus understandably did not want this (consider the situation of Muslims in Greece before Greece went into the EU). As far as I'm aware, many Greek Cypriots also did not want it. The Turkish population of Cyprus was largely forced into enclaves. Turkey debatably had the right to invade; however they did not have the right to do ethnic cleansing, which is exactly what they did, and turned the issue into a land grab. Today the issue in Turkey is still largely conflated with patriotism, making anyone who wants to do something about it easy to brand as a "traitor" by any opponent, a very convenient strawman.

@@ostrichguy1811 It wasnt Turkey back then, it was called Ottoman Empire. They inherited the former Eastern Half of Roman Empire. Turkey only had Cyprus for 250-300 years and mainly stayed in the Walled Cities. Cyprus had direct connection to Sultan of Ottoman Empire and by-passed their Pashas and so on due to corruption. Actually, the ruling class of Ottoman Empire, most of them married into former ruling class of the Greeks, Byzantine (Nova Romas) ruling class. (now the many Greek Cypriot families.) Funny because many of the people that participated in attacking Cyprus from Turkey are actually appear to have former Greek lineage, clearly shown in their last names, and their relatives .. kind of retarded if you ask me.... And, to be honest, the Ottoman's were not able to control the people, they just taxed them using their churches and kept the occupation quiet by keeping the Greek Christians happy. in 1920's Your leader, Kemal Mustafa Ataturk is the ultra nationalists that created the idealism of the modern Turkish identity. (way too nationalistic, actually the Grey Wolf story centered around former Roman mysticism about Ramulous and Romulous, stolen history,,, strange if you ask me... ) Also, before this Turkish had no written language, your people used Arabic, but incorporated a latin based alphabet to make yourself appear to be modernized... , as Turks are a mixing pot of peoples and cultures just turned Islamic. (they committed many genocides against Christians and other mintorieis) So, basically, it never really did belonged to the Turks, it was just a military out-post from their mainland... The Turks sent to Cyprus were tax collectors and administrators to the sultan and Paschas... they stayed in walled city for their safety and traveled in armed carvery.

@mariuskoala7528

There are no TC refugees. Refugees are people that were forcefully removed from their homes. Turkish Cypriots are not refugees the same as Greek Cypriots. Turkey stole almost 1 trillion dollars worth from Greek Cypriots, at some point they have to pay up. (its far less from Turkish value of land on other side... and there are still 3,000 Turks living on our side and they are MUCH happier to live with us than in the concentration camp in TRNC.) EOKA was disbanded after 1960s, thereafter this time a mock group was established and in my own opinoin as Turkey was creating problems their organization TMT and Dankdash. But again EOKA and EOKA-B are two separate groups. Most reports from International organizations about TC activity on the island, pointed to that TCs were hostile and aggressive towards them most other country men, including the UN. (maybe political movement, or sense of Ottoman "power" entitlement) So again, this sounds like propaganda.

I'm not even going to get into a argument on the internet, i am a person who research's history on both sides i'm not a one sided person. and for you information it was the greeks who went round killing the Turkish Cypriots for all the land, get you facts right.the Turkish Cypriots didn't even have any weapons or a army, children mothers murdered just for land. research the history then talk. i'm not laughing at the people starving but at politicians who have lead there country into that state.

@ Firstly, it is not a "Greek island". it is Cyprus. According to Wikipedia, "Full Hellenisation" of Cyprus only took place between 80 to 58 BC (22 years), under "Ptolemaic rule" , which was a Macedonian Greek royal family that ruled the Ptolemaic Kingdom in "Egypt" during the Hellenistic period, before Rome possessed everywhere. Cyprus has influences and populations from many surrounding cultures (Egypt, Lebanon, Jewish, Syrians) as well as tens of other countries that the island belonged to throughout history, (including Assyrians, Persians, Egyptians, Genoese, Venetians, Mameluks, Lusignans (French), Italians, Rome, Britain and Ottomans). In 20th century, it was finally an independent and peaceful "Cyprus Republic". Part of the Cypriot population had Anatolian origins that came 500 YEARS AGO from across the sea, when Ottomans got the island. THEN, with the incitement of Greece and their nationalist ENOSIS ideology (a fantasy to turn everywhere into Greece, just Like Nazis), SOME fascist Cypriots believed they should kill all the Cypriots with Anatolian origins, and join the island to Greece. They even staged a coup against their own president Makarios, overthrew the government and declared Greece hegemony. When they started killing Anatolians, at some point Turkiye interfered, separated a part of the island in the north, and settled the remaining Anatolians there. If Turkiye wanted, they could easily kill all the Greece sympathizer fascists and take the whole island, but luckily, Turkiye's government was not a fascist rightwing prick at that time, it was a glorious leftist government so they just did the most humane thing to prevent a genocide on BOTH SIDES. So, since 1974, they live separately in the north. This is the story of Cyprus. It is not like "Turks came and invaded a Greek island". And i m not your friend. i dont befriend people that just talks about something without any clue about it.

@ You are bored to death by reading history, because you are illiterate. You cant just state what you think as historical facts, you know that right? What i wrote were all double checked from international sources. I dont just fart facts like you do. I also have too many close relatives that survived those days so we all KNOW what exactly happened. I m not gonna ignore my own father that was a captive until Turkiye arrived, and start believing an idiot yelling from... Britain? If you want to believe Cyprus is a Greek island and there were no "Turks" on it until 1974, just go ask any Cypriot you like. Even they will tell you its not true. It is a nation separate from Greece and there have been an Anatolian population for centuries and that was not a problem for anyone until Greece decided to claim the island and manipulate Greek nationalists there. And if you still believe what you say, you may also believe in goblins and elves. Peasant!

It's been alleged that Henry Kissinger arranged the Turkish invasion of Cyprus when the Cypriot Government refused to allow the building of a NATO base on the Island. Cyprus has been fought over since the beginning of time because its location makes a useful 'launch pad' for military forces invading other areas, in particular, the Middle East. And where is NATO fighting it's wars these days... Conspiracy Theories about Binderberg etc proven true IMO. And the gave him the Nobel Peace Prize?!

This empty town is Varosha. Part of Famagusta. You want to make the people believe that there is no life in Famagusta. As always you bring lies to the table. Famagusta is a living city not ghost. Everything was ok before 1974 ? So many Turkish people including children had been massacred. This is not ok from our angle.
