I am convinced that Tolkien wanted desperately to be a songwriter but he was horrible at it to the point that he had to become a god-like novel writer just to get people to endure his songs, thus bringing him true joy. The entire story is a ruse meant to cram as much lyrics and Tom Bombadil in as possible

Tolkien was fond of norse and celtic myths, which were always told in poem form. I think he just wanted to capture that same feeling

I can one up you. He was terrible with song writing, so he created an entire world filled with languages and cultures and histories he created. Then he makes characters (Bilbo and Frodo) record the events of the story, as if Tolkien was merely translating their writings for us. So it’s not Tolkiens poetry and songs, it’s Bilbo and Frodo’s recording of the songs and poems they know or have heard

@@skillsmachine9164 For sure Arwen is barely a character in the books. I'm not sure she had a single line. Just descriptions of her. Ofcourse her scenes come at the expense of Gil Galad and Elrond who gets some bad scenes to give her opportunities which is a shame because he is supposed to be the wisest character. we made a trade with her. Although probably a good one overall. Arwen just being a prize for Aragorn with no ability to speak isn't great. I dont really love movie Legolas. He and Gimlis friendship being making fun of each other feels like a downgrade even if it's friendly ribbing. Also him despairing before the battle of Helms deep just to prop up Aragorn is pretty meh. I'll agree that book Legolas is not great too though.

@@peacefulwarrior9518 to be honest I didnt find their book friendship anything special. At no point do they really even compliment each other in the books the whole way through. At one point gimley says " that was a mighty shot in the dark legolas" when he shoots a fell beast but what else is there? Something I really love about this trilogy is how the present the action scenes and the magic. Magic is subtle which really gives it a sense of realism and the action scenes aren’t bloated and feel really impactful even if they’re “short” in some cases. The actual fight with the balrog was relatively short but the had the chase scene, the bridge, etc. it was all part of it. Every second felt important. Can’t say the same thing about all the hobbit movie action scenes or even some MCU action.

The tears flowed freely on this one. Thank you. Theoden King has grown dear to me. Tolkien was a master of small moments of humanity. The king’s words to the hobbits at Isengard touched my heart from the first reading. I have struggled with the way the movie depicts him. Not that the arc or story was bad, but I felt it missed the point of Theoden. Your exposition showed that there is still much we can learn, I will try to be kinder. Yet, I still find the greatest joy in Theoden throwing off despair, not being freed from mind control. As someone who, in my young arrogance, believed that oblivion was my just fate I know hard climbing out of darkness is. To the outsider, it might seem that Theoden simply stood and threw off the darkness. But that battle is real. It’s easy to fall into despair, so very hard to climb out. The Battle of Pelennor Fields is, to my mind, one of the greatest pieces of literature. From Theoden’s last temptation of despair, to noble death and love for his men and kin to Eomers taking up of the mantle. So much beauty. I have a father who is great among men, though he’d never dream to claim such a thing. Between him and Theoden King, I have giants of fatherhood to emulate. Thank you for sharing these words, and your tears.

Didn’t Sam sing the oliphaunt song when they were peering at the black gates? He asks Gollum if there are any oliphaunts and gollum asks what they are. Thus Sam says the poem to Gollum more so than Frodo, but Frodo does enjoy it.

Sam indeed sung it first, but Frodo completed it 💖

The one time they had a song in the movie is the only time nobody actually sang. I always thought that was a bit out of place

Convince Frodo was gay for Sam. At least in the movies. I love the lord of the rings series. Gonna finally get around to reading it when I finish my copy of the odyssey.
