There's some great visual storytelling in this film. The classes are literally depicted on levels, with the rich always above the poor (even in that scene with the poor father sleeping below the rich couple when he's hiding). Stunning looking movie. Definitely worthy of its best picture win (for whatever the Academy is worth).

I grew up in a crappy little house/cottage that would flood all the time. that scene hit me hard. Our toilets used to explode. And had a huge fire from the shoddy wiring. Shitty landlord who was a rich business owner. The term “parasite” to me represents that “class” of person.

The brilliance of this movie is that it starts out as a comedy and ends in horror. It was a perfect movie! Enjoyed y’alls reactions and commentary guys. If y’all haven’t watched The Glass Onion-A Knives Out Mystery is brilliant as well. It has a stacked cast and it’s over the top fun. I recommend Bullet Train as well.

You didn't seem to make the connection between "the ghost" and the guy in the basement. HE is "the ghost" that the little boy had seen years earlier (as he came up for some food) and that's why the little boy passed out when he saw him again during the birthday party.

Nice reaction, fellas. Just one point of note. 7:34 I don't think the mother's words here are to be taken at face value. While she does verbally express that she doesn't care about diploma documentation, there's a reason the director had her give it the once over before making that declaration. She does indeed care about credentials but was playing it off like she didn't. In other words, if he hadn't come prepared with that forged documentation, she'd have humored him but would've made up some excuse about why she wouldn't be hiring him. This is part and parcel with the director's critique of that society. That a family with the obvious skills to provide value were struggling because they lacked establishment credentials. It's not that the family chose to focus their talents solely on deceit and fraud, but that talent and ability alone were not always enough for people to make it in that societal structure.

I live the connotations of the stairs.... whenever a character goes up the staris, theyre progressing up a class, and when they go down, theyre falling a class. Throughput the entire film it constantly changes, but in the end, the father and the rest of the family are back where they begin.... at the bottom

Their flooded basement house is actually unfortunately very realistic in South Korea and after a big storm that flooded a bunch of basement houses in Seoul not even a year ago, they are now trying to ban those basement style houses. But unfortunately it’s usually low income families that live in these style of houses because they are affordable for them, so the ban on these style houses although may have good intentions, will also leave thousands of people without affordable homes.

I'd recommend next -- Bong Joon Ho's Memories of Murder, about a true serial murder case.

34:06 more often than you think. very realistic. 35:07 no, that's like an evacuation place 37:30 it's because they're in a pretty similar situation too 40:28 well also obviously because from Mr. Kim's perspective, is smell all that he can think about after all that? 44:05 yeah. he never did haha. 47:56 the "bell ringing" by the old housekeeper (right at the middle of the film) was the cue for the movie to switch the tone (from comedy to thriller)

A bit late but you mentioned the random english words thrown in the language. I live in korea so not talking out of thin air ^^ there are actually a loooot of english words in the korean language (modern one). Theyre mostly pronounced with a korean accent but theyre pretty common especially in the spoken language, not so much in the written. For writing the korean equivalent is used And to your question about how realistic the floodings are.. well those underground apartments used to be the cheapest you could rent (for obvious reasons) but after the gangnam floods last summer people actually did die so they became illegal. Now there are some semi underground apartments that are cheaper than the rest but not as cheap as the underground were

I recommend Burning (2018) by Lee Chang-Dong if you liked this. Has a similar theme to Parasite, is definitely different tonely and structurally tho. Has Steven Yeun (Glenn from Walking Dead) in it. Lee Chang-Dong is heralded alongside Bong Joon-Ho as one of the great contemporary South Korean Directors.

I would recommend his other movie, Secret Sunshine where the actress also won the Cannes Best Actress, the first for an Asian and one of the most emotionally draining performances pulled off by an actress; Meryl Streep's Sophie's Choice is still the one to top. Secret Sunshine is even considered better than Parasite by some. It's about a non-believer who turns to religion and turns her back again on religion.

@@denniszenanywhere Yes Secret Sunshine is better than Parasite. It's kinda a better version of Lars Von Triers Breaking the waves. I'd honestly just recommend anything from Lee Chang-Dong. Peppermint candy, Oasis, Poetry. All great movies.

@eureka3975 unrated in the US, but they are all obviously over 18, so what's the issue?
@matte5705
@matte5705 Жыл бұрын
@eureka3975 also, while it does have some sex scenes, I wouldn't say it's any more adult than parasite. Ratings systems are pretty arbitrary at the best of times, but especially for queer films as they are an inherently conservative puritanical system
@matte5705
@matte5705 Жыл бұрын
@eureka3975 OK? I understand why movie ratings purportedly exist... That doesn't explain why it is relevant in this case as none of these people are children, nor does it address the fact that these organizations have long histories of rating queer content much more harshly than exactly as explicit straight content as I was saying..

Do they know the meaning of the background pattern in the middle? I think they probably watched a Korean movie without knowing it. Japan's influence is surprising. There is no reflection on the past history, but rather, seeing that background pattern used for many products and marketing.

"How 'bout red food coloring?" - Nate, you have a devious mind. I'd of used real blood from a piece of beef. Funny how this movie gets us rooting for the perpetrators of the deceit or at least keeps us curious on how/what they'll do to keep from being exposed. This movie also reminds me of a 1970 black comedy/drama (there is death & murder involved but not graphic) called SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE starring Michael York and Angela Lansbury. It takes place in a Germanic (probably fictitious) country. Michael York worms his way in as a butler and schemes his upward social and financial mobility throughout the film.
