One of my favorite details in this movie is that the coastguard dude is in the kitchen from the beginning, and noone notices, even the people watching the movie

His mom was his first critic, he mentioned he was never able to satisfy her. Everyone here in a different way he blames for killing his love of cooking and symbolically ruining the art of food. The food critic who thinks she gets to decide who's lives to ruin and who to elevate who made him believe the quality of food is dictated by its exclusivity. The sycophant who enables her as she destroys lives. The regulars who have no appreciation for his craft except as a status symbol The investors who believe their status entitles them to special treatment who think they know his vision better than him The Actor who views food as a means to fame and fortune but does not appreciate it as art The "foodie" who deifies food because it makes him feel smart but does not care about the cooks and sous chefs who have the skill to actually make it. The staff who enable him and never push back never challenge him only ever say yes chef. And finally and most importantly himself. Deep down he knows nobody is truly responsible for him getting sucked into this pursuit of fame and prestige if he hadn't gone along with it.

And a small addendum, the actor who was in a terrible movie for the money, who betrayed his art for fame and money and no longer really loves acting as a craft anymore. Exactly like Slowik himself.

The bird you're supposed to eat whole is an ortolan. They're supposed to be blinded or kept in darkness for weeks, so they overeat, then drowned in brandy, and then roasted, not deep fried. And the shame is both from the fact that ortolans are super rare, they're a protected species, as well as the torture they're subjected to before they're eaten. (as an aside, heavy metal is not typically dissonant, even the really modern classic dissonant pieces, you know, the "piano bashing" ones, are not generally dissonant all the way through) I like that Erin's job is what made her able to not only read chef Slowik, but to give him an enjoyable experience. Her job requires her to read people and provide the experience that they want, she's always role playing as something, and that skill is what saves her, she knows what he wants, and she knows how to give it to him in a way that also saves her life. She's basically giving Slowik a bdsm scene, providing him with a script he can choose to follow. And he decides to do that. She gives him a final moment of joy, of rediscovering why he loved cooking in the first place, and in exchange she asks to leave. "Can I take the rest to go?" And he lets her go.

@heatherharvey2558 5 ай бұрын
Oh, my gosh, thank you! Yours is the first comment I've read that clearly makes the connection between Erin's professional insights and the way she deals with Slowik at the end. It's honestly one of my favourite exchanges in the film because of that.

The fancy dish that you eat with a towel over your head is a French delicacy called "Ortolan Bunting". It's controversial because the bird is near extinct.

Plus the way they're supposed to be prepared is torture for the bird, blinded weeks before death, overfed, and then drowned in brandy.

Regarding the actor character, the original idea was for Daniel Radcliff to play an exagerated version of himself. He was unavailable so they got John Leguinsamo instead to play the actor who had betrayed his art. Fun fact, John based the character on Steven Seagal whom John had met and created a strong dislike for on the making of Executive Decision.

Thanks for all of the good thoughts and guesses along the way, for a movie that seemingly demands our attention (repeatedly). Perhaps Chef found himself at the top of a tower of complexity and sophistication, where all joy of cooking for others has been drained away. Determined to make the best of it, and go out on top, he conceives one final menu, both triumph and revenge, and no escape for anyone. But freedom is found by one in a return to the simple, and the real -- a place of actual joy, where no one over thinks things, or puts on airs. And the loud claps: Pay attention, live your life fully, as you have no guarantee that your life will continue beyond this day. (Also, that cheeseburger at the end looked GOOD!)

Right, I forgot the name of the dish, but you do consume a bird whole, kind of. I'll explain how it's done. A rare songbird is placed in a cage with a shroud. This makes it over eat. Once it's fat, you place the still live bird in a glass jar, you then fill that jar with the best brandy you can find. The bird drowns to death in the brandy. Once it's left to marinate, you take out the bird, pluck the feathers, then fry the bird whole. Once done, you place the bird in your mouth with one hand, and while eating it, pick out the bones with your other hand, usually the left. The eating is done all while you have a white cloth placed over your face, to hide your horrid actions from God.

In my opinion, this movie is about art and how people consume it. We also consume the movie. Do we appeciate art when we look at it? Is it our purpose to watch closer at art or is it just a way of passing the time?

While the theory would fit the usual horror narrative, I feel it would be completely out of character for the Chef to poison her. A Chef serving tainted food to a customer is the ultimate sin in a kitchen. Some one like the Chef would never stoop so low.

@@przemekkozlowski7835 Yeah, plus, that would be breaking the rules for the service industry, he cares for that. She provides him with a service (a role playing scene where she plays an unsatisfied customer and he the angry chef who feels joy at being asked to to cook a simple dish, she offers him the script, and he takes it) so he should pay her for that service. She asks to leave as payment (still within the bounds of the role playing script she created) and he lets her.
