Remember, in the Dune universe, if a laser hits a shield, both the shielded and the laser gun are destroyed in a nuclear explosion. Shields when on also attract sand worms and drive them into a killing frenzy. The fremen had to take out the shielded ornithopter with the missile launcher first before their lasers could destroy the spice harvester. It's also why fremen don't fight with personal shields...but it forces them to fight even better without them.

The reason why Jessica being pregnant is bad is because they know that the baby will also become a reverent mother before she is born. As a child she will have all the abilities of an adult, but runs the risk that one of the ancestors could become dominant in her mind, with her being so young.

This, honestly, is so terrifying. It can be said a person is the sum of the experiences. What happens if, before you have any experiences, you are flooded with multiple lifetimes of experiences? Your personality never gets a chance to exist and instead you have to view everything through the lens of others' experiences which would most likely be in conflict with each other.

Most viewers of the movie misinterpret the end with Chani. Denis, the Director tacked on that ending. Spoilers ahead....................................................................................................................................In the book Chani is standing by Paul's side. Remember. Jessica was not married to Paul's father either. But their love was eternal. The last line of the book is Jessica saying to Chani...... "History will call us wives"......... The movie ending was more dramatic. Also, Paul told Jessica that he saw that Chani "Comes around".

I get what you're saying, but 'tacked on' seems a bit off as a description. The entire movie was highly story-boarded, every shot was planned out to a T. So not tacked on, fully intentional.

The bit about Paul saying to Chani before he fights Feyd was: 'She will have nothing of me' meaning Irulan will never have his child, his love or any kind word. This is missed in this film, as if Paul simply failed to take the opportunity, as he has already failed to take so many others, and Chani flips at that moment into a rational woman and hates Paul forever. A MAJOR diversion from the book: in this film we even see Chani dying in the desert when Paul finds her again, the result of his mistake.

@@stevetheduck1425 You are rewriting the story as the book told it and the movie did. "Forever"... You are kidding. What a stupid statement. Paul already told Jessica that Chani "will come around". He SAW it. The ending was added to the movie for dramatic effect. Chani and Paul will get together. It just was a cliffhanger. Watching Paul and Chani reconcile will be part of the next movie.

53:04 that is how the voice actually works. It’s not magic powers. Remember the first movie when Jessica told Paul he “almost had it” and then later on she told him “find the right pitch” it is literally like finding the right sonic tone where it is absolutely intimidating and convincing and just very hard to even think of anything else. That is why it should not be abused 24/7 cause people can get immune to it

So now you know who Jessica’s father is…her mother is Reverend Mother Mohiam who Paul used the voice to “SILENCE” at the end of the movie. The Baron forced himself on her. To punish him, she was able to change her cells exchanged in the act, infecting him to develop morbid obesity. I don’t recall in the books whether he knew Jessica was his daughter. But I do remember why he was fat!

In the book, Paul did not need to threaten the spice fields with the atomics, the water of life is all you need to destroy all the spice because it kills the sand trout, the larva stage of the worm. Spice comes as side effect of the lifecycle of the worms. No sand worms no spice.
@stevetheduck1425
@stevetheduck1425 Ай бұрын
Paul had already ordered the Fremen to seed the spice fields with the water of life, and a word would have ended the Spacing Guild's power forever. He threatens to kill billions to get the Emperor to kneel, basically. He fails, as the great houses do not recognise his authority, just as his father would have. He then acts as if the launching of his jihad across the stars is inevitable.

George Lucas “borrowed” from Frank Herbert's novel Dune (published in 1965) in making the movie Star Wars in 1977, 12 years later. There were many parallels such as 1) Luke Skywalker’s desert planet had two moons (same as Arrakis in Dune), 2) Jabba the Hut and Baron Harkonnen, and 3) Jedi mind control and Bene Gesserit voice control.

The marriage between princess irulian and paul would be a strategic alliance. as has been done here on earth for thousands of years between royal houses. in the first movie/ beginning of the book Dune... Jessica is Leto's concubine. his love, while his wife (not in the movie) is his strategic alliance. it is said later in the book, the concubines hold the real power. and also by paul to the princess. that she will never know his affection or touch. Chiani is to be his concubine, his true love partner.
@jcs1025
@jcs1025 Ай бұрын
He had to marry the princess to lend legitimacy to his claim to the throne. It’s a political reality in this universe. In the book Chani understood this and stayed by him. He would never love Irulan or give her children - it was just politics. While I like the change in Chani’s character overall from the book, the ending smacks of drama for drama’s sake. Paul saw this was going to happen - he could have discussed it with her ahead of time.

7:29 "i like that they have just - Earth insects" ... well, yeah. because they're from Earth. all life in the Dune universe originates from Earth. Arrakis specifically is a recreation of Arizona. the book makes it abundantly clear, listing all the flora and fauna from the Sonoran Desert that was transplanted onto Arrakis. so everything there is Arizona desert life that evolved under different conditions on a different planet for thousands of years.
@stevetheduck1425

The genetics masters of Bene Tleilax actually created the sandworms to create the spice the Spacing Guild needed to gain a monopoly, and this turned a green world into a desert. This was a long time ago. Arrakis was once green, and the Kynes family were working toward restoring that, but Liet Kynes was killed because Paul delayed, and Chani, her daughter, didn't know or care about the future of Arrakis, though her true name was a clue.

@@stevetheduck1425 i haven't read all the books, but i know sandworms evolved on Arrakis from a smaller burrowing creature, so that's probably what you're talking about that the Ixians created...and i know that Arrakis wasn't always a desert, and the emperor wanted it to be a desert to facilitate spice harvesting, but that doesn't contradict anything i said. the first book talks a lot about the plants and animals transplanted to Arrakis to turn it into Arizona2.0 basically

Haven't read the book for a while but I'd say no. DV's Dune takes some liberties with its portrayal of the Bene Gesserit especially Reverend Mother Mohiam. In the book, she didn't encourage the Emperor to eliminate the Atreides. Albeit, she didn't discourage him either. They're afraid of the Kwisatz Haderach (Paul) as he threatens their order and his arrival was a mistake, not under their control. Later she does conspire against Paul and House Atreides.

you lost me with the comparison to Star Wars. Star Wars got its inspiration from Dune. Both the writer, frank Herbert, and the director was showing us Paul is from Royalty. His loyalty is to his famliy. They are colonizers!! Frank Herbert was trying to warn us about charismatic leaders. They both were trying to convey this without explaining it to us. By treating the audience like adults. Chani has the moral compass of the story. She stay true to her people and believed their messiah should come from her own people, not a foreigner. I guess it depends on you background and the background of your ancestry. Some people will always root for the colonizer.

I think Frank Herbert would have loved this Chani. He wasn't happy that people reading the book got the wrong message, looking at Paul as a good guy/savior. Herbert wanted people to see not to trust charismatic leaders but it wasn't explicit enough in the first book. The next book Herbert made it more clear. In the book the characters inner dialogs were where the 'don't follow him' message was conveyed, making Chani the voice of that message in the movie was a good way to showing Herbert's intent.
