“We have come to meet you, not to greet you.” One of the best lines I’ve ever heard in a picture.

Such a great installment in the Frankenstein saga. It’s also nice to see Karloff and Lugosi on screen together.

I always figured you could attribute the monster’s lack of speech in this one to some brain damage he probably suffered in the explosion and then the coma he was in.

Great review as always. I'm sure this has been mentioned before but I am thoroughly convinced Peter Von Frankenstein is Frederick Frankenstein (Gene Wilder) as a boy (so much so that I believe his full name is Frederick Peter Von Frankenstein, the family referring to him by his middle name until he became an adult). It fits. Check it out.

I watched the original Frankenstein for the first time a few months ago, got to say what a tragic story !. The monster is raised to life, tortured with fire, escapes, meets a little girl and is happy to play , throws her in water by accident ( her fault for throwing flowers in the water ) and everyone wants him dead . How is the monster a monster again ?, it was so sad to watch . monsters lives matter.

Love the sets in this film. There’s a lot of the German Impressionism here. Wolfs library is to die for!

The little boy who played Peter was also the same actor who voiced the fawn Bambi in the 1942 Disney film.

@@landonwhyte2973 ah that might be true as there’s a documentary about Bambi where he was interviewed and mentioned that he later joined the military. The documentary is called The making Of Bambi, A Prince Is Born.

In all honesty, except for "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein", any addition after "The Bride Of Frankenstein" lacks the heart and innocence the Creation had in the first 2 movies. And although this is not one of my favorites of the series, the one thing that never fails to make me smile is little Peter's, "Well hello!" greeting when he enters the room. He's just so precious and innocent, it touches the heart.

I noticed you got a chuckle out of the fact the town is named Frankenstein. Believe it or not there is actually a town of Frankenstein in Germany and I visited there while station in the US Army during the 1970s. They actually have a castle there. Frankenstein is a municipality in the district of Kaiserslautern, in Rhineland-Palatinate, western Germany. On a hill towering over the village is Frankenstein Castle. Frankenstein station is located on the Mannheim-Saarbrücken railway. I lived in the Mannheim area. There is a more famous, Frankenstein Castle on a hilltop castle in the Odenwald overlooking the city of Darmstadt in Germany. This castle may have been an inspiration for Mary Shelley when she wrote her 1818 Gothic novel Frankenstein. I have been there also and they really play up the Mary Shelly connection. If I remember correctly the castle in Frankenstein Germany actually belonged to a different family.

Thanks for the excellent review. I actually like the original Willis Cooper script (195 page shooting script for THE SON OF FRANKENSTEIN turned in on October 28, 1938). It was then tossed out and a new 'script' was created. I put that in quotes because the film was notorious for flying by the seat of their pants and never really having a completed final script. They shot right up until 6pm on Xmas eve! And some of the actors had to return in January 1939. The first script had Lugosi as Inspector Krogh and no character called Igor. Overall I like the Rowland Lee film. But for those interested, seek out: Son of Frankenstein Shooting Script, V. 3 (MagicImage Filmbooks, First Edition, 1990). The Monster is quite vicious and outright kills quite a few people including a family of 3 :) I suspect Boris Karloff hated the original script because of that point. Boris had great respect for the Creature and hated gratuitous violence. After this film he was quoted as saying "the Creature was becoming more of a prop.." And he didn't play the role again.

Great review, I have this movie on one of the original "Legacy" sets of "Frankenstein", the one that was released to coincide with "Van Helsing". The most recent I watched this movie was on an episode of "Svengoolie" a long time ago. Been a while since I've watched it in its entirety, but I know I liked it. Its actually rare to get a third movie of a beloved franchise and not have it suck. I have a huge laugh at the "Document" and the "Photo of the Meeting", I bet that was happened to Universal's "Dark Universe". 🤣

I think most people who think of Frankenstein , think of son of Frankenstein because Igor is in it and Wolfe is referred to as dr. Frankenstein also the villagers actually know that the monster is a monster, not just a murderer

So. could the bride have survived the explosion? She was a monster after all.

Firstly, the scene with the Monster seeing his reflection in the water is from Bride of Frankenstein, just before the shepherdess falls in the stream. Secondly, you failed to mention on the blu ray you reviewed that there's additional footage not seen in previous video releases. It's not even mentioned on the box, but a scene before the secret panel opens up and Ygor gestures for the Monster to follow, come from the UK release. We see Ygor eavesdropping on Wolf VON Frankenstein talking to his butler, then we see previously unseen footage of the Monster in the cave passage and Ygor beckoning to him. No one EVER talks about this!

@zaranyzerak 3 жыл бұрын
Correct, I got the two mixed up. Again, filming 12 reviews, often at 3am after working all day when these were done, sometimes the odd minor detail gets muddled. Not the end of the world. As for "failing" to mention that detail about the additional footage first off it isn't a Blu-ray review, it's just a review of the movie. Second, I wasn't even aware of that. The only restored footage I was aware of was the death of Dracula in Dracula and the two bits of Frankenstein - Henry proclaiming that he knows what it's like to be God, and the full scene with the little girl by the lake. Anyway, thank you for the info, that's actually very interesting to me and I'm always keen to learn more about these wonderful movies. Just maybe think about how you word it in future, it came off a bit harsh. Thanks for watching!
@DetectiveKemper
@DetectiveKemper 3 жыл бұрын
@@zaranyzerak You think I'm harsh? You're lucky Ted Newsom is dead. He'd make you cry! As for me, I've been a film critic for many years for Phantom of the Movies VideoScope, as well as the author of three mystery novels that take place on classic horror film sets, including "Who Framed Boris Karloff?" that takes place during the making of Son of Frankenstein, that I had to study in detail for the book. Did you know, for instance, that Bela was being flown on a Peter Pan rig when the Monster is carrying Ygor's dead body down into the crypt to save Boris's back? If you look carefully, you can see the wires.
