Y Tu Mamá También and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuarón returns to the helm to tell this futuristic tale in which society is without hope since humankind lost its ability to procreate. The year is 2027, and women can no longer give birth. The youngest inhabitant of the planet has just died at the age of 18, and all hope for humanity has been lost. As civilization descends into chaos, a dying world finds one last chance for survival in the form of a woman who has become inexplicably pregnant. Now, as warring nationalistic sects clash and British leaders try to maintain their totalitarian stronghold on the country, a disillusioned bureaucrat (Clive Owen) is brought back into the fold of activism by his guerrilla ex-wife (Julianne Moore). Reluctantly, he takes on the daunting task of escorting Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey), the refugee who represents humankind's last hope for survival, out of harm's way and into the care of a mysterious organization known as The Human Project. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Charlie Hunnam, and Michael Caine co-star in this adaptation of author P.D. James's gripping 1992 novel.

that he represents that maternal aspect of nature.. or more likely the protector of the mother. ever notice how when a very strong, alpha-type guy is around, the dogs tend to gravitate toward him and show him respect and affection; even if he's a jerk sometimes? cats are similar only they gravitate towards the feminine, or any kind of nurturing spirit. they respond to sensitivity. they have a strong response often to new or expecting mothers, and if a man is there which she(the mother) looks to for help, the cat picks up on that. the cat will see how the mother looks to the man and gravitate towards him as well. (this isn't always the case but it's a theory i have anyways)

i like the use of the kitten here. it's showing how even though outwardly he is trying to be indifferent, he is becoming more and more invested in protecting kee. inside he has already decided to help and protect her and the baby (even if he doesn't fully admit it to himself yet). the cat seems to sense this. kee seems to subconsciously sense it too and looks to him for help without really understanding why. cats are often very drawn to new and expecting mothers, and the fact that kee values him so much makes the cat pick up on him i think. that's why it's showing him affection. the fact that he is kind of annoyed by the cat and doesn't know what to do with it shows that he's conflicted about his internal thoughts and doesn't know how to show them well. maybe he has lived with the cynical and cold exterior for so long, he feels like if he became too invested in this, it would cause him trouble. (which in a sense it definitely does.. but he realizes if there's anything worth getting into bad trouble for, there's no better cause than this one)

Chiwetel never gets his due props for his role as the rebel leader luke here. He killed the role so hard and nobody says anything.

I like it. Even such small details adds to the Great world building of this film. I noticed some romanians and polish amongst the immagrants. And you see the Indianish girl with the black hair? She is one of the few Fishes members who survives the battle at the end. You see her with a European male who survives after they touch the baby and proceed to move away from the army

Some people are so bathed in hate and politics that they can't see straight. They're all looking to see how this baby can serve them politically while Theo is looking out for the mother and daughter's health. Be political, but never unreasonable.

I thought the meaning of the kittens was simple and obvious: It shows that whatever's going on isn't affecting animals. It's only humans that can't give birth.

@@William_Sk Probably more relevant here is that it’s a baby animal, too. It isn’t afraid of him, suggesting his instincts are protective at heart, and it sneaks up on him, just like his paternal feelings for Kee will.

Samuel Gonzalez I know this is 4 years late, but cats and dogs tend to get protective of expecting mothers, so as it sees that Kee trusts him with what’s best for her and her baby, the cat knows he can be trusted to protect them so it shows him affection.

Means the relationship that the animals have with him. Dogs cats. Even when the birth happens, the dogs stop barking

I don’t think the cat “means” anything, but it does serve a lot of cinematic purposes. It lends realism to the scene. It enhances the main character’s status as an outsider. In makes him, and us, more uncomfortable. At the same time it establishes his humanity and provides a spark of something relatable and vulnerable to an otherwise alien and cold situation. Etc....

This is also a great analysis. I think there is a deeper level though with the idea of him being a sensitive person, and thus a moral one and true to the TRUE needs of human life...he doesn't pretend to care about politics, he simply sees the outcome. This is partially misguided, because the means and the outcome BOTH matter in morality, but he is, at his core, a true believer in morality...And ends up being so much more morally justified than the Fishes or other similarly motivated people in the movie (the Gov't and the Islamist Fugee mob at the Bexhill camp). He morally acts the way he knows how to and it ends up being the correct moral decision in this case. Basically I think his character is one of self-sacrifice due to the overwhelming moral reasoning that Kee and her developing baby are WORTH protecting and even ACTUALLY dying for, even if only because Mankind can no longer have children. Theo's character is meant to signal the common morality that every decent person has deep down in their soul. And to me, as an atheist, that is the spiritual and ultimately most compelling aspect of this movie. It is genuinely optimistic, IMO.

It's actually meant to be a metaphor for Noah's Arc since all the animals tend to be drawn to Theo.

@@jongon0848 I did not think of that. The one thing I was able to point out was that the journey Theo and Kee had near the baby's birth was kind of similar to the journey to Bethlehem

Isn't it interesting that this kitten even exists? They decided to end human procreation, but not animal? Talk about overpopulation! Cats have a very short gestation (~3mo.s?) and can get pregnant while pregnant! 🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱🐱

Don't bother, in the book the worlds governments haven't collapsed and there's no fuguee situation like in the movie. But do read the book just for the sake of it, they share the premise of a world with infertility but that's about it.
