CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Helen (Zita Johann) returns home from a trip she can barely remember and Frank (David Manners) vows to protect her.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Brought back to life after nearly 3,700 years, Egyptian high priest Imhotep wreaks havoc upon the members of the British field exposition that disturbed his tomb (shades of the King Tut curse). While disguised as a contemporary Egyptologist, he falls in love with Zita Johann, whom he recognizes as the latest incarnation of a priestess who died nearly 40 centures earlier. Spiriting Zita away to the tomb, he relates the story of how he had dared to enter her ancestor's sacred burial crypt, hoping to restore her to life. Caught in the act, he was embalmed alive and his tongue was cut out for his act of sacrilege. Now that he has returned, he intends to slay Zita, so that they will be reunited for all time in the Hereafter. Despite its melodramatic trappings, The Mummy is essentially a love story, poetically related by ace cinematographer and first-time director Karl Freund. Jack Pierce's justly celebrated makeup skills offers us two Karloffs: the wizened Egyptologist and the flaking, rotting mummy, who though only seen for a few seconds remains in the memory long after the film's final image has faded.

Imhotep is a much more interesting and romantic character than Frank. Choosing him over the man who died for her, sake, even though he's a living corpse, was stupid on Helen's part.

Not on "Helen's part" because despite having anaksunamun's soul she is still her own separate spirit and her own personality and character. That's why she says "I am anaksunamun but I'm someone else too" at the end of the film because it's her Helen side and anaksunamun fighting each other inside her head.

Mostly because movies were still a new medium, and actors fell back in their theater training. Sometimes it's a good thing because it can make the performance more spontaneous, and sometimes it's less good because it makes the action feel too broad.

Acting before the early 1930s was silent,. Despite the interspersed dialog panels inserted in silent films, actors out of necessity communicated with accentuated body movement and facial expression. This was also a product of their training as live theater actors, where they had to over-emote in order to communicate in large theaters from a stage. Remember, they didn't have delicate accurate sound systems. They had to project EVERYTHING from the stage. In the early 1930s, the actors were still giong by their training as live theater actors. It took a few years before actors started adjusting to the flexibility of having sound for their lines and varied camera angles allowing them to use more subtle facial expression. You'll see a big difference between the acting styles of the early and late 1930s as a result of this.
