Great film, spot on with the invasion of youth clubs in the north in 1970's northern soul nights where everywhere, dancing classes in saturday afternoon disco's even in churches, very northern...

I was there in 1974 at Wigan Casino blocked off my head on amphetamines. From 1974 to 1977.

lol the trailer said "The Music Was Motown"...except not really at all. It was all of the smaller labels who Motown overshadowed.

We used to go into Woods Bradford and we would get them to play the vinyls in the record booth like in the movie.I seen this when it came out, decent film.

+knockshinnoch1950 A lot of the plot was by-the-numbers, I agree, but as an American who grew up in L.A. I was really fascinated by the Northern Soul scene in England - it was really alien to me. And the idea of music as being a physical entity, something to be sought after, cherished, discovered, held - as a huge music fan now living in the internet age - I envy that joy of discovery of new music that took so much effort to find. Also found interest in the roots of club culture as it is now. You could argue it all started here. Speed use is a lot darker than this film portrays, but I guess it's all about when it's starting out and still fun. I'd recommend the movie to other music lovers, but agreed it's far from perfect.

Hi Daniel, for us here in the UK during the 60/70/80s the US was a distant exotic land of plenty where great music was being made by many obscure artists and labels. Even Motown stars were rarely seen here on live TV with visits by the Supremes seen as big events. The northern soul scene was a "counter culture" merging during the disco era to create the club culture we have today

+knockshinnoch1950 Thanks for your reply - of course, over here in the 60s, we were in thrall to the British Invasion, and all things English. It's interesting to see things worked both ways. I also loved that this movie was set in 1974 - the year I was born. I grew up listening to all of my mother's British Invasion records and her Motown records... All in all I thought this was a very enjoyable movie!
