Instant classic. People don't know how to make horror films these days. Fun Fact: Surprisingly, this film is one of the least bloody horror films of all time. This is because Tobe Hooper intended to make the movie for a "PG" rating, by keeping violence moderate, language mild, and having most of the horror implied off-screen rather than shown in great detail onscreen. However, this plan had actually backfired, and made the film even more horrifying. Because despite cutting and repeated submissions, the Ratings Board insisted on an "X" rating, and it wasn't until the film received the "R" rating when Hooper gave up and released it.

Seeing as we have movies like Hereditary, Midsommar, Get Out, Shutter Island, Us, Mandy and The Conjuring recently, i'm going to just call flat-out bullshit on you. This is one of the all time greats, but saying "people don't know how to make horror films these days" is completely ignorant, stupid and a very very bad and just objectively wrong take to have.

@@the-NightStar yeah, it’s the classic *old thing good, new thing bad*. We are arguably going through a horror renaissance compared to 5e endless generic slasher craze of the late nineties and early two thousands. From a pure filmmaking perspective movies like the Lighthouse and others coming out in the last few years are excellent works of art, and the many you mentioned are just all around pretty great horror films.

@@the-NightStar Those are good movies but they explain too much. Most good horror movies leave some things as a mystery. Like who these crazy people are and why they are killing random people. The remake took away any element of mystery and even tried to make us sympathize for leatherface by explaining he was bullied and has a skin disease. Stuff like that just isn’t necessary but they are doing that more and more in horror films now.

This movie is inspired by a True story of killer and grave robber Ed Gein, whom would dress up as a woman, and make furniture out of human skin and used human skulls as cereal bowls. Ed Gein was the basis for Norman Bates in Psycho and Buffalo Bill in Tye Silence Of The Lambs.

It's true. And I think that out of the three Leatherface is the one that resembles Ed Gein more because he really was demented. I think Norman Bates and Buffalo Bill are also based on him but they are portrayed as more rational and even smart.

There's something just so deeply, deeply upsetting about the scene at the dinner table where she's screaming, terrified, and pleading -- and their response is just, like, "ohhhh, boo-HOO." The way they mock and imitate her and take pleasure in her suffering, it's like worse than a creepy icy serial killer vibe. It's just unhinged from any sense of sanity or empathy, and like you said, there's no negotiating with this. I think that's part of the enduring legacy of the movie. It's a horror movie that doesn't just poke you with jump scares, it dumps you into manic insanity and then traps you there relentlessly.

Fun fact: Tobe Hooper (the filmmaker who made this) was originally aiming for a PG rating in hopes that this film serves as a warning for teenagers picking up hitchhikers (good ole Stranger Danger). The MPAA gave his initial edit the X rating (NC-17 of the day). He was forced to trim a fraction of the film to get an R rating against his wishes. The cut footage exists in its' entirety, but all of the audio is lost, making the 14-minute deleted scene reel a silent film. None of the footage was graphic enough to warrant a higher rating. All of the explicit footage (or lack thereof) still made it into the final edit. Oh, and the bodies? They're all real, science-donated corpses brought in from India, because it was several thousands of dollars cheaper to buy real corpses than it was to make rubber fakes.

This movie is loosely based on serial killer Ed Gein. Gein lived in Wisconsin. I think it was back in the 1950s. He lived in a small town. He was a loner and wasn’t known to go hunting yet he would offer his neighbors “venison” meat. Some women went missing. Police searched his barn and found some women that were hanging upside down and cut down the middle like deer. They searched his house and he had lamp shades made out of human skin. He had human skulls mounted on his bed posts. He cut womens’ faces off and wore them as masks. He would cut the skin off womens’ torsos and wear them as a shirt so that it looked like he had breasts. He would dance in the moonlight and dug up graves. The classic film “Psycho” was also loosely based on Ed Gein.

There WAS an intention behind it, albeit an unplanned one; Leatherface had to kill them because he was taught by his family to kill anybody caught snooping around the house (so they wouldn't report on them to the cops, exposing them as murderous cannibals); they also kill these folk to consume them, with Bubba (Leatherface) serving as the Butcher, Drayton (Gas Station Owner) cooking them, and Nubbins (the Hitchhiker) serving as the lure. They're all part of one big, insane, cannibalistic clan. Plus, unlike other later slashers, he didn't purposefully go out hunting the victims; they all trespassed on his property, and he was merely enacting the 'Stand Your Ground' Law. He only went out looking for trouble after Jerry, the third trespasser, nearly let Pam out of the freezer, causing him to wonder where the hell all these folk were coming from.

I first saw TCM at a screening only a few years ago. It was actually a fun and somewhat strange experience because the theater was holding a special horror-theme night with people dressed in fright costumes roaming about, but there was also a jazz concert being held in the street just outside, so you had this weird clash of vibes of horror movies and jazz music. Anyway, I don't think I found the movie particularly scary at the time, or I might just be jaded. The dinner scene was more funny to me than scary because they kept trying to give "Grampa" the hammer to beat the girl's head in, but he's so old and weak that he keeps dropping it over and over and over... and over. Any fear I had in the scene is turned into laughs.

I've seen a lot of horror movies, including slashers, and the gore didn't really come into it until Friday the 13th. Even Halloween has minimal gore. In my opinion, based on the movies I've seen, the original Dawn of the Dead is the movie that made slasher filmmakers consider raising the gore levels in their movies. That movie came out in 1978 and Friday the 13th in 1980, with Tom Savini working on makeup for both movies. i don't think that's just coincidence. There were gore oriented movies made way before these movies but those were ultra low budget movies, the kind only shown in regional drive ins. Movies like Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th were more widely seen, so they were more influential. I think TCM is the most artistically made of all slasher movies. It's almost beautiful in a sick and demented kind of way.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre is not a movie in a traditional sense, it’s an experience. The madness and loony nature of leather face and his family alone are disturbing. Then you have the documentary like cinematography, desolate scenery, editing and sound design which compliment all these things, the teenager characters do their jobs they may not have much development but the film gives us enough to get a feel of who they are.

if you're gonna watch any of the other TCM movies, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is my favorite of the franchise. It's a super fun, crazy movie. Highly recommend it!

It crashed not really based on a true story. It was made the year before it was released. But was based on Ed Gein

Hope you watched Texas Chainsaw Massacre : The Next Generation (1994). The one with Matthew McCoughney.

I actually think this is ten times better than the remake because it relies on atmosphere and surrealism to sell the horror. It never explicitly shows you the gore because it’s not really the point. Everything after this, as much as I love 2 and like the remake okay, rely on the gore and psychical torture to sell the horror over things like the surreal imagery, use of sound, editing & cinematography. Mainly the third, remake and its 2006 prequel. Mileage varies but I hugely prefer the terror of this. Easily in my top five horror films for these reasons with The Exorcist and The Shining. If I had full creative control over making a Texas Chainsaw movie, it’d get the R rating based purely on the intensity of the scenes and macabre imagery, with very minimal actual bloodletting. It’d be loaded with the most surreal, bizarre imagery I could possibly think of. Sadly the imagination seems to stop at shoving a chainsaw through someone’s body.

If you like horror films about serial killers, then watch a movie called 'The House that Jack Built' . Directed by Lars Von Trier. The true definition of a messed up movie, but at the same time it's beautifully shot and has an artistic flare to its cinematography

@@porflepopnecker4376 I get why she was, I’m just saying it would be smarter to not do that because it’s giving away her location and I doubt there’s any good person in the area to hear her. Until she got to the highway

The camera work in this for a low budget film I still find accelerating to watch. All the high tech camera work now doesn't give me that feeling for some reason.

Texas chainsaw Massacre 2 despite being more humorous is pretty good. Leatherface Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 has Viggo Mortense in an early role, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 4 The Next Generation stars Renée Zellweger, Matthew McConaughey I'm not joking, these are some weird movies.
