I actually saw this in the theater. My sister and I were pretty bummed about bad news and it was the only movie we didn't have to wait half an hour for, so in we went. We were the only people in the theater, and we talked about what was going on. Finally we just up and left, still crying and upset, and the theater staff took pity on us and gave us some cheddar popcorn to make up for the movie.

Kind of ironic for McDonald to call another comedian out for being "box office poison" considering the string of flops and garbage that makes up a lot of his career. He nominally had top billing in two movies - as far as I know - and both couldn't even earn their budgets back. His TV career is a different subject, but as a leading man and "writer/lead actor in movies, Mc Donald was a complete failure, just like Carrot Top.

The film would still have more than a fair share of problems, but I think you summed up the biggest one perfectly: Our lead here just isn't a sympathetic character. Compare Chairman of the Board to, say, The Nutty Professor. I'm using the remake since it was closer to CotB's release, but either one could work here. Like this movie, The Nutty Professor featured an eccentric genius with a talent for invention, but it was far better received by critics and audiences alike. While there are plenty of different factors like the particular style of comedy, I think what ultimately separates CotB from it on the most important level is that the Professor was a likable guy. When he got nervous in front of his crush, it was endearingly awkward. When he got excited talking about science, Murphy's energy and charisma in the role made it feel like we were watching a person with genuine passion for their work, and you could get excited with them. When people mocked him for his weight or his lack of confidence, you empathized with him about how low it made him feel. He was clumsy, kept finding himself in bizarre situations, and had plenty of silly quirks, but at his core he was someone that you could relate to and who you wanted to see succeed as a result. Here, there's none of that. The lead's only real character trait is that he's eccentric, and most of those quirks just make him look like a dick. There are never any moments in the movie where it feels like they're really trying to form a connection between him and the audience. Throw in the fact that they rely almost exclusively on prop humor, and it's easy to see why he (and the film) fall short of other movies with eccentric scientists like Sherman Klump or Doc Brown.

What is most depressing about the thought of this movie is how many people who I like who pop up in it, and people who had careers at the time! Anyway I adore Courtney Thorne Smith for Melrose Place, but boy they must have had something big on her to rope her into this...
