MoviePass Is Trying To Save Movie Theaters, But It Needs To Save Itself First (HBO)

Movie theater attendance is the lowest it’s been since 1995. But a company called MoviePass is trying to fix that.
Mitch Lowe is the CEO of MoviePass- and as the co-founder of Netflix, he’s partially to blame for movie theaters underperforming.
“You know people have got to get out of this cocooning phase and into the experiential, “ says Lowe.
A subscription to MoviePass lets you see a movie a day, for ten bucks a month.
The math is simple: when MoviePass started in 2011, it cost up to 50 dollars per month, depending on where you lived. At the time, the average price of a movie ticket in the US was about $8 dollars, meaning you’d have to see seven movies a month to get the most out of your subscription.
But when the company dropped prices to $10 last August, the price to see one movie evened out to about the same price as the pass itself, and you got to see an unlimited number of movies a month.
Not surprisingly- subscriptions jumped from twenty thousand to over three million.
But Lowe wants to disrupt your movie-going experience altogether.
“The reason we're able to offer you at extraordinarily low price is because we're going to monetize the data to sell you things to create kind of an Open Table for your “night at the movies,” says Lowe, “So we’ll be working with restaurants and bars and build deals...and of course we’ll make a percentage of the revenue that you would spend there.”
Despite Lowe’s confidence in the business model, the stock of MoviePass’s parent company, a big data company called Helios and Matheson (HMNY), is tanking to a current low of $00.11 a share. HMNY has unveiled a plan to raise a billion dollars from investors, and do what’s called a reverse stock split, which could temporarily boost the stock price.
Shareholders will meet and write MoviePass's next scene-or its ending- on Monday.

Ive been paying $10 a month to see 3-6 movies a month. I win. If Movie Pass dies, I'm back to seeing about 4 - 10 movies a year and bringing in my own snacks and drinks when it's hoodie weather.

MP is legit. I love it. I don't care about the surge price. I can wait. I try to go to the movies at least 4 times a month. It's worth it. If they go bankrupt, I hope Google or Amazon step up and buy them. I also bought AMC. Its a good deal too, but it would be around without MP.

Agreed. I’ve got a 60 inch 4K TV hanging from the wall in my room. I also have access to all the new movies as they’re released in theaters. @JordanGoRetro

Mike Kwon I would argue that the movie theater is not exactly an experience. Generally the only appeal is that the movies are there first. I bet if you could rent a movie for the price of a ticket the same day as release, no one would go to the theater. Sports events and music events are radically different than the experience at home. Sports it’s the fans and the camaraderie, musics it’s the energy of a live performance. But seeing a movie in a theater is generally worse unless you have a abysmal home theater setup. Rather than benefit from the communal aspects, you usually suffer from loud, inconsiderate people.

Exactly. They’ve got it down to a science. It’s basically like people that register for gym memberships because of their New Year’s resolution. They know that most people won’t keep going. Some will only consistently go for maybe the first month or two, and then that’s it. These are the people they really profit off of. And if someone is a hardcore movie goer who starts costing them money? They’ll do exactly as you said. If you become unprofitable for them (between what you pay them every month, and the money they make off selling your data), they’ll just restrict you or revoke you. To me, the company is nothing but a semi-scam.

3:30 i just want to point out a few flaws in the statement about gaining money from investors and doing a reverse stock split to "boost" the price of share.... a reverse stock split means you combine 2 or more shares of stock (meaning if you have 2 shares trading at $50, after a 2 for 1 stock split you would now only have 1 share of stock valued at $100).... its kinda like saying "thank you for working so hard, instead of me paying you 1,000 pennies an hour im gonna pay you $10 an hour, i hope you enjoy the boost in your income"... technically yea the price per share goes up, but you still have the same dollar amount of equity

MoviePass is a business. Not a social experiment! They aren't trying to get more people to come to the theater. Alot of people would still go to the movies at least twice a month, regardless if they had to pay full price or not. Look at the numbers and you can see that the movie industry has consistently made lots of money, every year. But, if we can go see those movies at a much less expensive price, of course, people will take advantage of that! You would be dumb not to do that!

I think everyone is in agreement that the overall quality of movies has bottomed out. I've been an occasional movie goer for years now, and I hardly ever see or hear about a movie that would interest me. It's basically down to director names or screenwriters, since big name actors can't be trusted to always pick good films (I'm looking at you Fassbender).

10 bucks is way too low. The entire formula is built on very unstable ground. Look, 2017 was the worst year for ticket sales in 2 decades. Movie theaters are struggling to bring in the audience and that's all the leverage you need. I would sell movie-passes at 40 bucks a month (35 if you sign up for a year) that let you visit as many movies as you want, but there would perhaps be restrictions on early access. I would tell the theater owners that I will fill their seats like never seen before, but instead of buying tickets, I would give them a partial refund, based on half the income of the sales of the passes. In short, the earlier a theater signs up, the larger their share will be of that 50%. The more theaters join, the more that slice gets sliced up. That would promote early participation. So, tbh, a downside would be that not every theater would accept our passes. At first! Because obviously everybody will rush to join in when they see others fill up to their last seats. Especially when there's still a chance of a quite substantial monthly return. The costs of running a movie for an audience remains the same whether that audience are 10 or 100 people. So, on top of the already paying customers, our movie passes will fill a lot of empty seats. Sure, that's without buying tickets for those people, but instead theaters now have many more customers to sell snacks, drinks and merchandise to. They'll have gift shops with everything movie related, from special T-shirts to one-time releases of certain comic books. Etc. .. Heck I've been in theaters that serve dinner in special sections. Anything is possible as long as you bring in a lot of people. If the passes double the amount of visitors, a 100% increase in those sales can be expected, but I think it will do more. Especially when all those new customers still have the money in their pocket that they saved on buying tickets. Oh, and pass holders get 10% off on snacks and drinks as well, because that's how you promote sales. Not by making stuff ridiculously expensive. The company would even invest in special treats for pass holders in connected theaters. Like maybe a free drink. Or a free limited release Iron Man key-chain that has a laser that's very annoying on a movie screen. (Can't win em all). This is how game creators switched up the market. By giving away their product for free on a mobile and start selling a lot of stuff on the side. In their case in-game. These passes will do the same with the movie theaters. Now.. I just gotta keep this entire plan a secret somehow...

Honestly. If they charged 20 dollars a month they wouldn't be in that situation. 20 dollars a month is a good deal to most people considering movies on Friday nights could be 15 dollars already. Even if most consumers are aware they need to see more than 1 movie a month to get the biggest bang for their buck, most people like myself don't have time to go to the movies more than once a month cause of their schedule. They'd still buy a Moviepass thinking they could fit two movies in a month and forget/fail to most months, and boom they stay afloat from people like me and those ppl who see movies 4 times a month, but I feel like there's a huge population of movie goers like me.

So let me get this straight, if you choose to opt out of getting your data collected you cant get the service. Welp this service is not really worth it especially with Netflix, Hulu, amazon and then if your already paying for cable some channels such as HBO,Showtime or Cinemax offer movies in theaters you can either get for free or pay a small fee to watch. Going to see movies within theaters is just so expensive especially if you go Imax a family could pay upwards of $50-$60 just for a trip to the movies NOT including dinner, I think people still go to the movies but not frequently just for specific movies, and thats great because it means we as consumers have more choices instead of before where it was just limited to the theaters and you had no real choice and they could charge you whatever they wanted.

Movie theaters lost their appeal. $8 for small or medium pop corn, $4 for small drink. $8 to $15 bucks for tickets. Hell no, there used to be a time you could go and enjoy yourself. If you got kids/family, 4 people can easily spend 150 bucks and totally not enjoy the experience.

Before I found out my plan would be changed on me, only going to see the movies I really wanted to see was more than enough to get my moneys worth and then some. Now that I don't plan on resubscribing, ill make it a priority to see all movies that I can, not just the ones that initially catch my eye
