In a later video I will make another list of movies which never received a Blu-ray releases that would look great on 4K UHD, but for now let’s focus on existing Blu-ray releases.

I own the Shout Factory 4K scan. It is fabulous. Zero buyer's remorse on that purchase.

Todd Gatesh- I have the shout factory with the 4K scan- it looks good but there is still room for improvement. The HDR could add a lot since there are so many dark scenes.

Those two directors’ catalogue were made for 4K! All of Fincher’s and Kubrick’s films have gorgeous cinematography that are brought to new life in mere 1080p HD’s. A Clockwork Orange will be next for a 4k release apparently.

If we're talking about classics, I think Gone with the Wind is a MUST as a 4K. I would also like to have every single movie directed by David Fincher in 4K

Couldn't agree more!!! It was remastered at 8k!!!! The Bridge on the River Kwai has been released on 4k; we need Lawrence, but also Doctor Zhivago; David Lean needs to be on 4k!!

Lutalo Moore Arrow are releasing a Blu ray of American Werewolf in London in October. Alright it’s a 4k downscaled to 2k but Arrow transfers always look great. I have their Weird Science release from a few months ago and that’s also decent

Pointless ? What are you talking about ?? Anything shot on film allways looks wayyy better in 4K vs digitally shot. Sound track they could remix....but we’re here for the 4K picture!!! 🙄🤨🤦🏽♂️

mmgmcnatt : Look at anything Christopher Nolan does 🤦🏻♂️ they both shoot on film but film isn’t physically in capable of 4K and Nolan refused remixing his movies beyond 5.1. QT is the same boat. So yes, it’s is pointless 💯🙋🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️

Supposedly Star Wars 4K is being released next year (with all the rumors over the years, I won't hold my breath just yet). If they do, it will be more than likely the altered special editions that came out on BluRay. I am hoping for the originals to be released, but with George Lucas not wanting it, and with the amount of time and effort required to restore the original negative, I can't see it happening. The fan 4K release mentioned in the video is called 4K77... it's not so much as a fan edit, but a fan restoration of the 1977 theatrical release, using 35mm film.

Considering Disney just remade all the cover art for the whole Skywaker Saga I'd say it's almost inevitable we'll see the 4Ks late this year or early next year

@@wesfishcare Until I see an official announcement from Lucasfilm I consider it speculation. It is unusual for Lucas film to release artwork for something they haven't announced yet.

Great video! I'm fully with you on King Kong '33 in 4K as that was the film that made me fall in love with films as a kid. As for the lighting, im not sure what kind of space you have to work with but try pushing it back as much as possible to minimize the glare. If you can get them 4-5 feet away.

Jaws 4K is something I am dying to see. The Blu Ray is already a great looking movie. I had a chance to see the remaster back on the big screen in 2012 and it looked so good. Obviously I want Star Wars in 4K - Indiana Jones would be so good to have and Back to The Future would just top it right off!

True Lies doesn’t even have a blu ray release! It sucks. Neither does James Cameron’s The Abyss. (One of my favorites!) I will buy those two films on 4K in a heartbeat!

Jeff, I love your video on why older films shot on 35mm improve more significantly from 4K blu-ray releases than modern films shot on digital. And I really appreciate your coverage of classic movie releases and black and white movie releases on 4K. I can’t tell you how much I despise most of the current movie releases. I love the Criterion Channel and Criterion Blu-Rays, along with similar quality releases from Arrow, Shout factory, Indicator, Warner Hone Video, Cohen Film Collection, etc.

I agree, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is long overdue in 4K. I am also waiting for The Abyss and True Lies to come out. I would even love if they just put them out on standard blu-ray.

Great list as usual Jeff, one thing though, with the new lighting the movies you held up were washed out and hard to see, you're going to have to experiment to see which way is best. Oh and my list, gotta be 9 movies Star Wars (agreed, Rogue One and Solo too if possible lol) and LOTR for sure!

The one I am waiting for the most is Fantasia. Disney dropped the ball on the Blu Ray, instead of a lossless fantasound track, we got just a standard stereo track. Hope they go Atmos and do what they haven’t done yet and put some effort into it..

Being an old timer I’m going back some, but two war movies came to mind: Von Ryan’s Express and Guns of Navarone. The latter I saw in NYC in the 60’s, it was projected onto 3 screens! Talk about wide screen movies, that was a first for me. Was that in Cinemascope? If they ever did the 4K upgrade I would buy them pronto.

I totally agree about the Star Wars trilogy. That would be awesome in the untouched versions. Great 4K discussion!! Like you mentioned with your video here is the lighting need some work.

Limitless would be the perfect DV Transfer. In this film when the actors take the pill and see the world with a fresh coat of paint to say the least. An atmos or DTSX track would take this film to a home cinema jewel.

The Great Outdoors with John Candy and Dan Akroyd (basically all the John Candy movies.) Also, all the horror movies, Friday the 13th collection, Nightmare On Elm Street, Halloween, Scream etc.

The Beatles' 'A Hard Day's Night.' I remember the DVD was pretty crisp, and you could see George Harrison's guitar work synchronized perfectly with the audio (in the age where bands just pretended and never matched up in non-concert movies). It would be incredible in 4k.

Did they use gels to color Caligari? I saw a screening of it once and I recall some scenes tinted with color. I'd love to see Nosferatu in 4K, but I feel like that negative has been long gone after the film was ordered to be wiped from existence. The presence of multiple copies of it are pretty miraculous in itself.

How about some Disney love for 1979's 'The Black Hole?' It would have to be restored for matte effects and suspension cables removed, but it's majestic in scope and models are quite beautiful + John Barry score! Love your content, bro!

All of Ingmar Bergman, all the great movies of the French Nouvelle Vague and the Italians; Fellini..... Then of course Hitchcock.. Casablanca, Citizen Kane.. Kurosawa, Ozu... OMG, There's so much!!! Film history, movies which changed film forever, priceless classics and film-milestones all!! The WHOLE of the Criterion Collection, please!

Jeff, period films might not be your thing, but 'Dangerous Liaisons' and 'A Room with a View' are two beautiful, well-crafted movies that would be strong contenders for a 4k release.

It really depends on the movie. 4K seems to be a great format for films that were shot on 35 mm, 70 mm, 65 mm or IMAX film strip. With some exceptions, most films since the mid to thousands have been shot digitally. Usually digital films are only mastered in 1080 P. (Also known as 2K) if a 4K copy of such a film is made, it’s an upscale. Upscales of films are controversial because they are not true 4K. Very much false advertising.

You should do a comparison video between 4k and a blu-ray that says mastered in 4k. 1998 Godzilla and Glory are perfect examples and explain the difference between the two 4k and blu-ray mastered in 4k.

If I ever get a 4K Ultra HD Player and even a 4K TV, I would love to see "Heavy Weights" (1995) on 4K along with many films like "Coraline", "Enchanted" (2007), "The Sandlot" (1993), "The Last Starfighter", 'The Monster Squad", "Back to the Future Trilogy" and even the Tarantino Films like "Reservoir Dogs", "Pulp Fiction", "Jackie Brown", "Kill Bill: Volumes # 1 & 2".etc

hey man, i'd recommend turning off your rooms overhead lights as they tend to be quite harsh and cast 'racoon' shadows under the eyes which isn't great. The colour temperature of your new light is cooler than your warm overheads as well. I'd recommend turning off your overhead lights and putting some wax paper in front of your new light to diffuse it a bit. Alternatively, if you have a window in the room, open it up. Shooting next to a window always looks great but I acknowledge that that might not be feasible for you. Great channel!

I know this is an older video, but from what I've heard, one of Lucas' biggest sins was essentially doing away with the original negatives when making the special editions in 1997. So this is why fan projects like Despecialized have to essentially "recreate" the original version using sources like the Laserdisc. So even if Disney wanted to release the unaltered trilogy, it's not as simple as re-scanning the original negatives, as they sadly don't exist anymore.

I agree with you completely on your list. I would also include the Indiana Jones and Back to the Future movies. Those, along with Star Wars and Jaws are musts. I would love to see King Kong on 4K as well. My grandpa showed me that movie for the first time and he saw it in theaters when it was first released! I love his stories on how much King Kong scared him at the time.
