It's theorised Jenny died from AIDs as she got sick around late 70s early 80s and she mention the doctors didn't know what it was. The fact her entire adult life was full of drugs and ,presumably, unprotected sex with multiple partners supports it. The changing socks comment from Lieutenant Dan is actually really crucial for soldiers to do back in the day even during WW1 and 2. Soldiers did a LOT of walking and since Asian countries have really heavy monsoons/rainy season they would track through deep mud and floods. If they didn't keep their feet as dry as possible they would literally ROT in their shoes.

Jenny was never really mean to Forrest. She was a damaged person, but a good one. I think whenever she left Forrest, even if it left him confused and maybe even hurt, she was trying to protect him from her. Her failed suicide attempt where she ended up crying and holding herself was proof that she was a scared, aimless person. She was definitely not a horrible person. But I think we can say that because we are an arbitrary party who knows her whole story in detail.

I think she was mean to Forrest for belittling him and telling him that he didn't know what love is when you don't need to be a genius to know it, it's what you feel and Forrest could feel it because regardless of whether he was very smart or not, he was still a human and had a heart of gold. He always loved Jenny, she did not want to see him because she was the one who did not know what real love was until she recognized it, it was too late for them when she decided to look for him after so many years and not tell him that they had a son and leave him out of child's life and missing important things like birth, first steps, words and those things that are invaluable to a parent who really wants to be part of their child's life. That seems inexcusable to me, I can understand that she had an incredibly unhappy, abusive and miserable childhood and she definitely did not deserve that and that it was difficult for her to feel loved when the men she chose were equal to or worse than her father, it was part of her trauma, but keeping secretly to Forrest that they had a son? Nah. I can't believe it took her so long to make that decision to reunite them. In that I do not intend to defend her, it was cruel

@@Threeleebird I can see where you are coming from but I think she knew what love was but didn't think she deserved it. Coming from experience, when you think lowly of yourself you end up pushing people that you know truly love and care for you away. Because you don't think you deserve or are worthy of their love and love in general. Sometimes you feel like you'd taint them and bring them down to the gutter where you think you are and deserve to be. Also, depending on how long shes known she was sick..... When you have health issues alot of times you don't want people to be around you or love you because you are either afraid of being loved and then hurt or you're afraid that you will leave them behind to deal with the aftermath of your death alone. And when a person is loyal like Forrest, sometimes the only way to get them to leave is to do and say horrible things to them and try to get them to hate you or give up on you...... I always saw the fact that her father abused her made the impact from a young age that somehow being treated badly by men was "love". So when she tells Forest that he doesn't know what love is, it's just her projecting her own insecurities since she is the one who really never knew what love was🤷🏽‍♀️ Just my perception tho, anyone else's experience with the movie is their own and also valid, and I still LOVED your video❤️

I think people feel so strongly about Jenny because she makes them uncomfortable. Both Forrest and Jenny grew up with hardships, and while Forrest's life leans towards fantastical. Jenny's is just a little bit too realistic and she is unjustifiably vilified. And so often people say similar things to this video in which Jenny is a horrible person and she always putting Forrest down. When in all actuality that never happens in the movie. Outside of his mother Jenny is the most supportive person in Forrest life. She doesn't take her trauma out on Forrest because she's too busy taking it out on herself. The same cannot be said for Lieutenant Dan, who is forgiven much quicker than Jenny.

She also could have accepted his proposal and been rich but she did love him and felt he deserved better than her. I always felt like she wanted him to find someone better; I agree that abuse left her with low self-esteem/self-worth/insecurities. Becoming a mom and loving her son and his dad got her to stop running and realize she did deserve love and respect and that she could be more/everything she thought she couldn't be.

@@brandyanderson3522 , yet every time Forrest would stick up for her, she has a funny way to show gratitude. And then after rejecting Forrest’s proposal sleeps with him and leaves. I know people will make defenses for Jenny. But if I'm being honest, Jenny is just like every character in this movie who has a choice. And in life, we all have a choice to decide what our paths can be. The only one controlling our actions is ourselves. Nobody forces you to do anything (Unless they’re holding a gun at you. But it does lead to a questionable morality to whether you’d rather die than betray yourself). After Jenny's father was sent to prison and died, he didn't force Jenny to go into the drug and sex abuse life she did. That was HER choice she made. She could have been a singer, in my opinion. But that was all up to her. She made the choice not to go there. To me, a film works when a character realizes that they must take responsibility for the actions they make. Growing up ain't spelled D-R-U-G-S, S-E-X, or A-B-U-S-E. Jenny had a choice. She has talent. She has a chance. It doesn't matter about your environment, what your mama or daddy didn't give you in your life, or if society won't give you a shot. JENNY HAD A CHANCE. And so do the rest of us. So let's use it while we're all still alive. Because if there's one thing we don't know, is that we don't know what tomorrow is. We have no idea what tomorrow will be for us. But sometimes, we can only know WHEN WE DECIDE. So let's all make a decision.

Honestly, I don’t understand why everyone is so harsh about Jenny personality. She’s clearly just abused traumatised child, who was broken in littlest age. And it’s not like she could have any real treatment with it! Kids like her have no roots or good role models, so she was desperately seeking for something all her life, constantly making worst self destructive choices and picking men, who was abusing her just like her father. It’s pretty psychologically accurate and sad as f*ck. She was very lucky to meet Forrest… and he was lucky to have her too, actually. Not like he had high chances to meet someone else, who genuinely loved him so much…even in that broken way. So I don’t get the hatred at all.

Yeah, a comment I read on another reaction to this movie put it well- that Jenny kept running away from a life with Forrest because due to her abuse, she likely felt she wasn't worth anything, and didn't deserve anything better than abusive men, especially a good compassionate man like Forrest. People are like that in real life, so the haters need to be more understanding.

Yup. When you know anything about this type of personality, you can see it derives from someone thinking they're unworthy of Good and only deserve Bad. So whenever good stuff comes along, someone like Jenny will run away or sabotage the relationship in some way because they feel they don't deserve to be loved gently and openly. When she says "You don't wanna marry me", it's not a statement on Forrest not knowing what he wants, it's her saying she thinks she's too broken and bad to deserve someone who loves her so much. It's so freaking disheartening to see people hate on Jenny so much and say she's a bad person, or that she doesn't deserve Forrest. There are people in real life who need others who will show them through and through that they love them - that's how they can heal. And Forrest clearly didn't mind putting in all that love and kindness.

Kids, who were betrayed by their parents don’t love themselves. It’s very big wound, and kids tend to think, it was somehow their fault. No one can hate Jenny more than she herself. She couldn’t stay with Forrest, cause yes! exactly! She thought he was too good for her- and his brain condition has nothing to do with that, people like her run away from everything good and kind they can have in life. Trying unconsciously punish themselves. When we see her as a waitress- it’s healthiest look on her for whole movie. She really was trying, it was just too late. …So many people forget about her pedofilic father, like it’s something not important. But it is. And all her actions didn’t come “from nowhere”. Sorry. I get being upset at Jenny. She was traumatized as a child and never really got over it until she became a parent herself. She was beat and raped by her horrible drunk father. And she was so little too, it’s just horrific and sad. 😢 She may have looked down a bit at Forrest because he was mentally slower than normal people, but let’s face it - Forrest was emotionally stronger than everyone else around him. He rolled with anything that happened to him and overcame all obstacles in life. Had Jenny gotten together with him sooner, she might have learned how to deal with her trauma better. He could have helped her heal. And she wouldn’t have gotten into drugs and sex like she did. So I can understand people trying to defend Jenny because of her past. But I also understand people who hate her. At some point in your adult life you have to take ownership for the decisions you make and try to overcome your circumstances and not let the past dictate your future. Sadly Jenny came to that realization a bit too late.😔 At least their son will have a good life and he has the most amazing dad ever. 🥰🥰

25:34 Using the period of life where she did drugs (including sharing needles) and probably had the most unsafe sex practices, as context... I think the implication is that she had AIDS/HIV, which was unknown at the time, and so didn't have a treatment yet. Also, don't knock Jenny for becoming a waitress while Forrest was on his national run; it's a lot better position from the self-destructive party life she'd been doing, because she's actually doing something with her life. She even looked cleaned up. That's one of the visual hints that Jenny already had Jr, and was trying to make a better life for her child. She also knew she was terminal, and so she knew she had to take care of her affairs- to let Forrest know he has a son, and for her to know a happy family life before it was too late.

I think you were quite unfair to Jenny... Besides the fact that she had horrible trauma from her childhood that she never got any help dealing with, and which definitely strongly influenced the destructive nature of her life choices, why should she be condemned simply for not wanting to be with Forest? She probably loved him more than anyone else in her life (until their son), but that doesn't mean that she needed to develop romantic feelings toward him, no matter how wonderful he was as a person (which he was, obviously!). And I don't see that she even did anything particularly cruel or bad to him: she says a few hurtful things to him (as loved ones sometimes do) which Forest doesn't seem to hold against her, and she ghosts him after sleeping with him because she has her own shit do deal with and probably feels guilty for possibly taking advantage of him or something, but does this really make her a "bad" person? She never promises him anything, nor asks or expects anything from him: they simpy go off on very different life paths as they reach adulthood. However, as we see, Forest clearly deserves and *does* know "what love is", because he seems to understand it on a much more simple, but perhaps more fundamental, level than most people of more "average" intelligence - but that doesn't change the fact that it's pretty reasonable that Jenny would feel that they couldn't have a relationship on equal terms, no matter how much they loved each other. I'm assuming the only reason they married at the end was so that Forest would become Forest Jr's legal guardian, and therefore avoid a future of him ending up in foster care when Jenny dies, not because she suddenly realised that she had been in love with him all along. It was a form of closure for sure, but I don't think it was meant as a true "the hero finally gets the girl!"-moment at all, because all that mattered in the end was that he loved her and she loved him, and they were now a family, even though she wasn't IN LOVE with him as he was with her. Sorry if this was all a bit rambling! I also haven't seen the movie from start to finish in about a year, so I'm only going off of memory + the clips in the video. Oh, and I've always thought that they alluded to Jenny dying from AIDS, but I just read somewhere that the author of the book the movie was based on stated in the sequel that she died from hepatitis C, apparently.

In Jenny’s defense: Obviously she was incredibly damaged and emotionally whip lashed. I believe that every time she mentions stuff like “Forrest you don’t know what love is” or “run Forrest run” she’s speaking out of her own experiences and how she doesn’t know what to do with bad situations and SHE doesn’t know what love is and views it as convoluted. Thennn because of all of that she’s constantly in trauma bonds with other people and relies on drugs to cope because she’s emotionally stunted. Although her leaving after her and Forrest sleep together is cowardice, I don’t think she knew how to confront her emotions in a healthy way and ran away like she’s used to doing in order to protect herself. Obviously she made mistakes that hurt Forrest in the process but I believe she did love him but didn’t know how to handle it, or even believe it because she’s never had healthy love in her life. She’s definitely flawed but I have empathy for her

And I’m glad Forrest stuck by her cause he was showing that UNCONDITIONAL love she never knew. Cause truly SHE didn’t know what love was and HE gave it to her. I believe we can’t excuse her for hurting others or her terrible behavior but we can believe that she is a tragic character and needed healing and love instead of rejection. It blows my mind how so many(let’s face it) men react to this movie and immediately hate on Jenny. They’re always so forgiving of Lieutenant Dan for treating Forrest like shit, and then turning his life around, but when Jenny does the same thing, they attack her for it. People don’t understand the trauma that victims of child abuse and molestation go through, and given that it’s spanning over the 60s 70s and 80s, how little therapy was available to those victims. Let’s get one thing straight: Jenny and Forrest were never in an actual relationship so she had no obligation to be with him just because he was sweet. If anything, she pushed herself away from him to protect him because she knew her life was a mess. She pushed him away because she *does* care about him. After she hit rock bottom by almost killing herself, she tries to mend that bond with Forrest but realizes she should not just rely on his kindness, so she runs away that last time to make herself self-sufficient. She didn’t plan on getting pregnant, but she did plan to better herself on her own terms. And when she gets sick, at that point her child’s well-being is the most important thing so of course she’s gonna do what it takes to make sure her son is happy and taken care of when she’s gone and she knows Forrest is the father and would love and protect him. It’s Jenny who is the one who doesn’t understand what love is. Forrest grew up in a loving home. But because of the abuse Jenny endured from the very first man that is supposed to show her what love is, she then leads a life thinking she her only worth is her body. Drugs are an escape from her trauma. She doesn’t understand that Forrest loves her for who she is but she does know that he doesn’t deserve to put up with her own issues. It’s only when she turns her life around and gets better on her own that she lets him back in. I just wish guys wouldn’t just assume Jenny’s a bitch because there’s much more below the surface that they don’t care to understand. They’d rather make her the villain instead of seeing what she’s going through as well.

I think it's important to note that she is the one who taught Forrest to run-- but they use running in different capacities. His is almost therapeutic or motivational while she seems to run away everytime things get difficult. I think her "leading him on" was because she knew he was the best person in her life and kept coming back for that comfort but always left to protect him from her. I think Jenny was a complicated and tortured character. She never thought she deserved anything pure. I think the hate is short sighted. Not to say that what she did was right, but she was trying to run from her demons by different means, drugs, alcohol, abusive relationships. I think her character is so much more nuanced than what you give it for. Because we see most of things play out from his perspective, we forget about hers. It would have been nice if she was able to find her self-worth sooner, but sometimes people never do, and overcoming sexual abuse as a child spills into all your relationships and is a large weight on anyone’s psyche to carry or overcome. I feel that was brushed off early on in your reaction. Just because she was saved by her aunt, it doesn’t mean that she miraculously made her pain disappear.

A lot of people have already defended Jenny the way I would, regarding her personality in the face of her abusive childhood and life, so I won't add onto that. However, something I also loathe is the entitled opinion that many reactors (mostly men) feel about Jenny to Forrest, that because he treats her well and would be "good for her" that she's obligated to romantically love him and marry him and all that. It's a disgusting mentality. No one owes anyone anything like that, and if the only reason someone treats someone well is because they have expectations of such an outcome, they are a loathsome person.

Other commentators already said what there is to say about Jenny, I'd just like to add that this reaction broke my heart a tiny bit. I've been sexually abused in my childhood too, and there did other cruel things happen to me as well and I gotta say it can definetely break you as a person and for the last two decades I tried to heal myself and recover from it. When bad stuff happens to you - especially early on - it can damage your soul to the point of pure and utter self hatred and you refuse to believe that you deserve anything good in life. Even now I'm a very lonely person because I have no friends and cut off contact to my entire family, and that's because I'm so afraid others might find out how weird I am as a person, or worse - I let them into my life and drag them down or scare them away because I might treat them wrong. So, you saying how much you hate Jenny throughout this reaction was a little stab in the heart.

It's worth mentioning that Bubba Gump Shrimp came from this movie... they're not attaching Forrest to an existing company like they do with all the other historical references. If you look up the company, it started in 1996, two years after this movie came out and won all the awards. Also, ditto what everyone else is saying about Jenny. She is a broken person who is just doing the best she can. Her whole life's mantra is "run away." When she was a little girl being sexually abused by her father she prayed to be turned into a bird so she could fly away. When Forrest was being picked on, she told him to "Run, Forrest, run." When he told her he was going to Vietnam, her only advice to him was to not try to be brave but to just run away. It's the only way she knows how to deal with pain or danger or trauma (of which she has a ton). That's what she's doing whenever she leaves him, and when she tries to commit suicide. She's just running away because she never learned how to deal with things in a healthy way, or how to love or be loved by someone. She is an incredibly realistic and tragic character, and we should feel sympathy towards her, not hatred. Also, thank you for the Austin Butler/Elvis reference! I'm obsessed with that movie right now!

Jenny only does the exact thing she tells Forrest to do: ‘If you’re ever in trouble, if you’re ever afraid, don’t try to be brave. You just run!’ It is a common if not textbook reaction and coping mechanism for victims of childhood sexual abuse. As are many of her behaviors- the drug use, etc. The consequences are real, they are lasting, and they are destructive if not appropriately addressed.

Nobody is mad because she said "no". As a matter of fact that would have been the decent thing to do. But she didnt say "no" instead she kept on showing up playing with his feelings and then leaving again. And she did this to a man who was neither mentally nor emotionally equipped to handle this and she knew that damn well. She has a tragic backstory but that doesnt excuse everything. She is not an idiot, she is self aware enough to understand what she does is shitty. She deprives Forrest of the first few years of his sons life and his son of his fathers love and substantial resources because she feels like it and may not ever have come clean if she didnt contract Aids. I see little redeeming qualities in her.

The blonde girl on the school bus in the red and white dress is Tom Hanks daughter Elizabeth. Tom based Forrest’s speech on the kid who played his character as a kid because he was from that area of Alabama. There was going to be a sequel where Forrest was raising his son who contracted aids from Jenny and he was going to meet Princess Diana and be near the Oklahoma bombing and other 90’s events but the script showed up either the day before or day after 9/11 and Tom and the director decided the movie had no meaning anymore and didn’t make it. Jenny always loved Forrest but she was so messed up because of the sexual abuse that she suffered when she was child and never got the help she needed to deal with it, I never understand why people hate on her so much it wasn’t like she was kept running to hurt him I think she kept running from him because she thought she would hurt him a lot more if she stuck around.

Also, defending Jenny, she had partners that were like her father: abusive and controlling. That's all she ever knew and she'd always leave Forrest and never truly return his love because she, in her heart, knew she wasn't good enough; that she was damaged goods and Forrest deserves better than her and she didn't know how to be that through her life. She'd leave to protect him from her and the last time she left was because she really wanted to better herself: if not for her than for Forrest. She got an honest job and her own place and i agree with those below that he was running around the country for a good while and couldn't get a hold of him, exactly. And i do believe it was AIDS that got her in the end. And I believe Forrest's running 'for no particular reason' was his own way of dealing with the feelings he has toward Jenny and her leaving that last time and maybe every time. But he never seems to feel bad for himself, aside from maybe "why won't Jenny love me", but that's about it.

loved your reaction! also, I won't pile on with the Jenny comments, but one thing I wanted to point out that I haven't seen mentioned much is that I saw you get upset about her not informing Forrest about their son. remember that when she found out she was pregnant, he would likely have been on his 3 year run, so there wouldn't have been any way for her to reach him (this was before cell phones). she waited until after he was finished and sent him a letter, basically reaching out to him when she could. I understand the frustration about Jenny but to me, she is such a tragic character who was abused and never had any help working through her trauma. I never saw her as a bad person, just a very hurt one who never did anything malicious toward Forrest. she loved him by pushing him away because she never felt she was good enough to love him. anyway, sorry my comment got a bit rambly haha thanks for reacting to one of my favorite movies! ❤️

Hi Haley Hastings! Forrest Gump does a fantastic job at balancing many genres of film (Drama, Comedy, Romance, "Coming-Of-Age", War Film, etc...) altogether in 1 movie! I love that Forrest showed the upmost loyalty to those closest to him, and I think that is a quality we can all admire and try to apply in our own lives! Personally, I often connect with this movie because my brother actually has Autism (So Forrest and my brother can relate a bit since they are both disabled). I also just wanted to mention that Last Year, I actually posted a video on my KZfaq channel that was almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention was to try and create something unique. If you have a few minutes sometime and are interested, here is a link to that video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hdhdpqyas6eyiZs.html If you don't check it out, no worries at all! I won't be offended! But Thank You So Much in advance if you do see it! I hope you Have a great day today, Haley Hastings! You And Your Husband Please Stay Safe and Stay Awesome! 😊 😊 😊

So she slept around because she felt it was all she had to offer, and did drugs as an escape. She thinks she doesn't deserve someone as kind and pure as Forest so she keeps running away.

She felt she didn't deserve it, and especially not from someone she knew to be so good as Forrest. It's heartbreaking. It took her all those long 20+ years to come to terms with it. A metric f$*!-ton of drugs. Multiple near suicides and God knows what else. Forrest deserves the world. He got it. He was just a good person to everyone. And there are way WAY too many moments in this movie that just kill you every time. But him worried about his son being smart at the end there destroys me every time. Tom Hanks man. Even though Jenny is not the titular character, this is still her story as well as Forest's. And we don't have her narration but there are three very important things that Jenny says the forest that tells you about her outlook; 1) Run away - because that's how Jenny deals with her issues she runs away. When she was a child that's the only thing that allowed her to escape. This includes the drugs and suicidal thoughts. She doesn't face her issues but just moves on. 2) You don't know what love is - so many people misread this as Jenny saying Force isn't smart enough to know what love is. But and Jenny's life love has only brought her pain, and that's what she associated with. So what she feels for Forest can't be loved because it doesn't hurt and it's not scary. 3) You don't want to marry me - once again so many people see this as her rejecting Forest. But this is actually Jenny showing that she doesn't believeshe deserves love. Jenny has no self-worth and how Forest describes her in these scenes is textbook depression 101. This doesn't excuse her actions but it's a legitimate reasoning for them. Because Jenny is not a horrible person she is just a traumatized and unhealthy person

It's an easy trap to fall into brother, it really is. In 2022, we expect films to fully flesh out all of the characters but in the '90s that just wasn't the standard.... Funny enough, both The Green Mile and Forrest Gump give us Tom Hanks - our hero, and 2 co-stars who basically are the entire central plot -- John, the black male prisoner and Jenny, the broken white woman - they have lives full of injustice and trauma because the system does not protect them, but all we get to see is how our hero feels about them, and how our hero deals with their influence on his life. Obviously, there was more to Jenny's life than Forrest's affection for her.... Even with a character as treasured and likeable as Forrest Gump, we have to remember he didn't even fully grasp what happened to Jenny, he didn't go through that hell, his home life wasn't perfect, but it was safe - he was protected and loved - Jenny was not so fortunate. She coped as best as she could.

defenders of Jenny are harsh on first time watchers. When people defend Jenny they usually watched movie several times already or watched it after 2000s when ptsd became big thing. Before 2000s ptsd was not that big thing that's why many didn't understand leuatinant Dan at first too. First time watchers don't catch much about that Jenny abuse thing because it is already rich movie with every single scene is telling something special so they watch it so intently and what's happening exactly at the time. The movie is so good which doesn't give us time to think about that small detail of Jenny's childhood life. And with that mind watching, what we bellieve is we bellieve in second chance. But after that second chance our sympathy goes down and down on most people. Jenny had second, third ....tenth chances to get back with Forrest and fix her life but she still chose to run and with that hurts Forrest again and again repeatedly in the process. That's why first time watchers hate/ don't like Jenny because we already started sympathizing Forrest since he is protagonist and his mental health was clear to us from the beginning but Jenny's hidden. Even in real life people help other people but if they talk about some childhood trauma and doesn't wanna rise on the legs back then even the most patient people will leave them. But Forrest didn't leave Jenny and was waiting for her forever without meeting anygirl while Jenny fucks every single guy she meets starting from her high school, which gives us impression of she's just using Forrest as a therapeutic relief once in a while.

I feel ya, I stopped watching them too. I always go to the comment section to see if there is hate. And most of the commentaries are🙈 also do not get the hate. I know people who have been through what Jenny went through. Some go that route some do not, it is not for us to judge.

Hey Melissa Espinoza! Forrest Gump also came out at my birth year (1994)! It is 1 of those movies that never gets old for me! Whenever I watch it, I just find that it is SO engaging and well-acted that it feels like it is a quick watch even though the movie is almost 2 1/2 hours long! I find it to be very Inspirational, and it has moments I think most people can relate to emotionally. Also, I often Personally connect with this movie because my brother actually has Autism (So Forrest and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled). I hope you Have a great day today, Melissa Espinoza! Please Stay Safe and Stay Awesome! 😊 😊 😊

Forest Gump really words to highlight our views and biases on hardships and disabilities. In this movie we see Forest who has a learning /mental disability, Lieutenant Dan who has a physical disability, and Jenny who has a emotional / mental disability. ~ Because we can see Lieutenant Dan's physical hardships, we excuse or forgive behavior from him that we don't from Jenny. Actually we put on some of Lieutenant stands toxic traits on to Jenny even though she doesn't even exhibit them. ~Because we can see the struggles Forest went through due to his learning limitations, we often miss they've given him much more than the took away. It also has highlighted the problematic viewpoint that we have towards the toxic mentality that is the friend zone. ~ Jenny's emotional struggles are really boiled down to her being selfish. Or not getting over what we all can acknowledge would have been a very traumatic experience at a very young age. There's little empathy for her the character and often other negative actions are placed on her that she does not exhibit in the movie. Her story arc is often overlooked in the movie as well as some unrealistic expectations placed on her especially when you consider the time period in which this movie takes place.

Just to clarify I am not saying that Forest's feelings or actions towards Jenny are problematic. I am saying the very concept of being placed in a friend zone is a toxic mentality. And one in which the wrong person is often sympathize with.

The thing with Jenny, I believe is that she truly believed that Forrest was too good for her, in the sense that she wasn't worth of Forrest's love. She is constantly asking him why he was so good to her, because she thought she never deserved that. You can see in the men she chooses: abusive, manipulative, gaslighting assholes. And yeah, that stems from her childhood trauma. Many people hate her and think just what she herself thought: That she doesn't deserve Forrest, which I find ironic. And they completely ignore the fact that Forrest is in love of her and only her, as she was the first person to ever be kind to him outside his immediate family, and his first true friend. It only completely clicked on my mind in the scene after they have sx and probably conceived Forrest Jr. Like you said, it is strange that the taxi driver asked her why she was running away. And that dialogue has a specific function: for Jenny to answer "I am not running away" In her mind, she is only ever going to drag down Forrest. She wasn't running away or being selfish, she truly thought she was bad for him. You sometimes pointed out how she aknowledged Forrest after he became rich or famous, but, she never ever really asked for money or recognition. She only ever was happy to see him again. Finally, people sometimes is angry that she just called Forrest when she was dying out of selfishness. But she did it for their son. She wouldn't leave him alone. If she wasn't dying, probably would never called him again, believing that she was a burden or beneath him. It's sad to think that she died thinking that.

I'm actually surprised and very disappointed in your view of Jenny. She did own up to her mistakes and past decisions, unfortunately it was at the end of her life, but she had a very traumatic life that took her a long time to figure out how to pied herself back together. I don't know why she didn't tell Forrest about his child but him being indisposed by running across the country for 3 years probably had a lot to do with it as well as her trying to make a stable and sober life for herself at the same time

Jenny was VICIOUSLY and horribly abused by her father sexually. Women with that kind of abuse are known to make poor choices. She kept finding abusive men. She always loved Forrest, and she didn’t tell him about their son because he was out running for over three years. There were no cellphones back then. He was unreachable. Also, during the sixties, millions of kids made it to San Fransisco to find themselves and do LSD. LSD is I like all other drugs. Mushrooms are similar. It was a massive movement. She was just doing the best she could with what she knew. She died of Hepatitis C, but it could have been AIDS. Needles and unprotected sex. She would have no way of knowing she was being risky. I’m 51 and this film is a classic. Great reaction, just try and forgive Jenny. She was a broken person and in the end gave Forrest his son.

I won't pile on the cases made in Jenny's defense, but I will say that you should watch the movie again and keep what everyone has said in mind. Also, I forget which other movie commentary channel that said it, but I thought it was very insightful, "I don't know if Jenny is good for Forrest, but he's good for Jenny." If you can put yourself in Jenny's shoes or sympathize with her in the least, I feel like it's actually so sweet that Forrest was the one stable person in her life who gave her unconditional love time and time again, when she probably felt that she was unworthy of him, and there was probably a part of her that didn't want to overcomplicate that, so she resisted him often times, but there were moments where she couldn't control her own romantic feelings for him. But yeah, please watch the movie again, and keep in mind that realistically a lot of victims of abuse (be it physical, emotional, or sexual) do actually behave a lot in the same way Jenny does and yes, those behaviors can hurt their loved ones too. If you can root for Rue from Euphoria, you should be able to root for Jenny.

Hey Strawberry Herpes! Forrest Gump is a movie that when I saw it at a younger age, I didn't understand how Jenny was also "running" but not in the literal sense like Forrest did. I guess the contrast between Jenny's path and Forrest's path is what makes this story so special! And Yes, the people who hate Jenny should really direct the monster label to her abusive father instead....Personally, I often connect with this movie because my brother actually has Autism (So Forrest and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled). I absolutely love how realistic Jenny’s character is. I cannot imagine the things that were done to her as a little girl by the very man that was supposed to love and protect her. How could she not be left traumatized and further F- up all her experiences w men? Don’t think she got the support she needed after surviving that so she never felt worthy of Forest’s love. She was never cruel to him, she was lost initially then didn’t feel worthy. She is a more complicated character than Forest and in the end, she was able to be a good person and mother and wife. That is the reality of trauma survivors sometimes and she is not a villain by any means. Also, I’m sure this has been answered by other commenters but she died of AIDS.

Love your videos! About this specific reaction, I feel like a lot of reactors I've seen, specifically men, usually just don't understand Jenny's character from a psychological perspective-how being sexually abused can twist your perception of healthy relationships and make you self sabotage. It's a shame more people can't grasp this concept, as it is incredibly realistic and prevalent among real life victims. It doesn't mean that she should automatically be seen as a good girlfriend and that what she's doing is good/healthy for Forrest, clearly it's not, and ends up being very damaging, but it also doesn't mean that she's a "horrible person." Wish the nuance wasn't lost so often
