I have been to Punxsutawney for Groundhog Day 4 times now. It is a lot of fun. If you ever get the chance to go I highly suggest it. As for the couple that got married, this past year there was a couple that got married on stage at the celebration, an hour or two before Phil made his weather prediction.

This is definitely a coincidence that you're watching this movie on Bill's 72nd birthday. It's definitely one of my favorite films that I try to watch every year on Groundhog Day (February 2nd). I hated this movie the very first time I watched it because of the repetition of scenes. After I watched it the 2nd time, I absolutely loved it. Most commenters below are right that Phil's time trapped in Punxsutawney is 30ish to 350 years. I read somewhere that the original script concept was his staying trapped for 10,000 years. This wouldn't have seemed believable to film-watchers so most of us go with the 30/350 concept instead. Many reactors react to this movie either on or the week of Groundhog Day. It's a funny, feel-good movie to relive again and again (and again, and again.. ..🤣🤣🤣). My classic movie suggestions this time are: "The Champ" (1931), "The Lady Vanishes" (1938), "A Night At the Opera" (1935), and "The French Connection" (1971). Good luck on the move to your new home! 📽❤️

It's interesting how learning there is no tomorrow causes the five stages of grief. 1. Denial. "This isn't real." 2. Anger. "What did I do to deserve this?" 3. Bargaining. "What do I have to do to end this? What do you want from me?" 4. Depression. Suicide and not getting out of bed. 5. Acceptance. Learning new skills. No more resisting. It's like mourning your own death.

To know every nuance of that day, what every person was doing, and the skills he developed (piano, ice sculpting, and who knows what else), he arguably could have been looped for decades. some film blog calculated 33 years and 350 days. but for me, it likely was much longer. I mean, he could pretty much pre-narrate every comment by every person in that town in multiple scenarios. and that doesn't count the countless days, weeks, or months, he simply did nothing but despair or simply rest due to mental or emotional exhaustion.

I think one of the most important lines in the film is Phil saying, “I don’t even like myself!” It’s a throwaway line, but it’s pivotal to explaining why he acts as he does in the beginning and how his changing actions and the motivations for those actions are understood by the fact that he is actually beginning to like himself, finally.

The movie was shot in reverse, because Harold Ramis, the director, knew that Bill Murray got meaner the longer movie shoots went. Because of this movie, Ramis and Murray didn't speak to each other for many years, although they did reconcile before Ramis's death.

@@PrimeCircuit Relax, I was being pretty light-hearted about this. if you want to take it serious, you can believe whatever you want, but he didn't become "a good guy" or a guy who was suddenly filled with esteem and healthy values because of anything that happened that single night before. He had his dynamic personality shift/perspective shift well before then which is why the whole town loved him, why he was smiling more and more, why he was enjoying playing music and being around people and was sociable and engaging and considerate many days before the last day. He had been doing those things and dedicated to doing those things months or years before that last day when he was mapping out and fixing all the tragedies in town. His personality shift to do those things and value those things was clearly well before then - a selfish hateful person doesn't spend a year only helping others and THEN a year later suddenly becomes altruistic and content . The personality change is what caused the behavior change a year[s] prior. The only thing that happened that last day was getting her "in the bed." While she didn't sleep with him that night (likely because the studio/writer were cautioned that would seem too on the nose) but she absolutely WOULD have slept with him and actually says "why weren't you like this [secshually asssertive] last night?" Making it very clear she was open to secs the night before. The only NEW thing that had never happened repeatedly before that last day was her accepting him as a secs partner/mate. Of course he said "i'm happy" before falling asleep because he got what he wanted - he got the girl finally. That's my whole point. He had to jump through 30 years of hoops to finally get accepted by the bytsh and get her "in bed." All the profound or romantic BS regarding his mentality/emotions/perspective happened in stages well before that last day, years or decades.

An old German superstition was that if it was sunny on Candelmas Day, winter would be long and cold. When the Plat Duetsch emigrated to Pennsylvania in the 1700s, they brought this superstition with them. The ground hog got tied in somehow, probably from Indian lore.

"Can't have a shadow without the sun." Someone believing in that tradition probably saw a groundhog come out of its burrow on a sunny day. They probably startled it, themselves, but thought it saw its own shadow because of the sun and linked the two together lol. Cuz I just don't understand how an animal would be that afraid of its own shadow on that one day of the year.

31:10 she didn't have that cash on hand, that was a checkbook she was holding up, she's going to write a check for what appears to be the last of her savings, so you were probably right the first time. (the US, at the time, used bank checks all the time to pay for high-priced items so you didn't have to carry huge amounts of cash)
@noodle_fc
@noodle_fc Жыл бұрын
That Mary didn't know about checks has to be an age thing rather than a European thing, right? As I recall, debit cards became a widespread thing shortly after this movie came out. Surely other countries used bank checks also, no?
@grife3000
@grife3000 Жыл бұрын
@@noodle_fc I'm not sure; all I know is that a German girl in America KZfaqr kept talking about how surprised she was to see checks. So either they died out very quickly in Europe and we are unique in having people still writing them, or they died out further back in time than they did here.
@michaelklaus
@michaelklaus Жыл бұрын
@@grife3000 It is/was very different across countries in Europe. A few years back a French teacher told me that (at the time) in France most people used checks to pay for most things. Especially paying rent and other monthly bills like power feels weird. Here in Germany we use a lot of Giro banking, direct debit, and debit cards for a really long time. Apparently this goes back to the financial crisis of 1907. Especially with Giro banking (wire transfers) and debit cards the concept is that one can only spend/transfer money people actually have in their account (although there is also some overdraft... which many Germans never use) which is the stark contrast to checks and credit cards. Personally (born in the 80s) checks were a concept I mainly knew of from American movies; I vaguely remember that my parents had some Eurochecques maybe special travelers checks for going on vacation in another country... until the early 90s. Apparently in the 2000s the Eurocheque guaratee was disbanded which finally had the significance of cheques dwindle further... which also led to said French teacher to face some issues as she was spending at least a quarter of a year in France still but worked in Germany. For credit cards my personal experience was basically the same. Until the 2010s I did not know anybody having one and did not have one either. But around that time the costs became more reasonable and especially the acceptance across Europe rose significantly.

I've lost track of how many times I've seen this movie, but I'm not sure I ever caught the look of disgust on Phil's face when he drinks the vermouth. I remember seeing this in theatres when I was 14. The idea of living the same miserable day over and over would be beyond infuriating. In order for him to know the dates, times and situations for most of his interactions would at the very least require years of living through that same day, if not decades. He goes from being unknown in the town to hated and finally loved and admired by the people in the town and they only know him for a day each time. I love Groundhogs Day and the Truman Show because they make you wonder what you'd do in these situations and it seems hellish. You're either plagued by extreme monotony or you've been living a lie your entire life against your will.

Theories vary, but some sources estimate that Phil Connors was stuck in the time loop for almost 34 years. (most fall between 10-10,000 years).That includes all the skills he had to learn like playing the piano, ice sculpting, etc. The mayor is Bill Murray's brother Brian Doyle-Murray. A Math professor actually tried to estimate how long "Phil Conners" was stuck in that time loop. He even went as far as to ask the writer of the script. The writer had no idea, it wasn't part of the script. Dozens of people have tried to figure out the same problem and everybody kept getting wildly different answers. Everything from a few years to decades. However, one answer kept coming up over and over, and when a scientist used a computer, the answer seems to be between 10,000 and 14,000 days which works out to between 30 and 40 years.

One should only ever watch the original. James Stewart served in the Army Air Corps and the Air Force Reserve for a combined total of 27 years and retired a Major General (two star). He was a combat pilot in World War II and flew 20 high-risk missions over the course of 15 months before the wars end. He saw dozens of fellow pilots and crews killed over the skies of Europe, and worse yet - he was their commanding officer. Author Robert Matzen writes about this postwar period in the actor's career in the new nonfiction book, "Mission: Jimmy Stewart and the Fight for Europe," and said that during the course of his research, he spoke with "the guys that flew with him, who told me about the fact that he went flak-happy on a couple of occasions - which means shell shock, battle fatigue, what we now know as PTSD. He wasn't afraid of bombs or bullets. He was afraid of making a mistake and causing someone to die. That was his endless stress, and that's what ended up grounding him."

We got a twelve pack of PBR beer, got the car on the tracks, put a brick on the gas pedal, got out through the windows and sat on the hood and drank beer for 20 miles till we got to the next town over (we did this at midnight). No wonder at one point Phil tries to kill himself, but can’t even do that. The screenwriter’s original vision was a much darker film. I’m glad they went for a much lighter story.

I mean the really scary thing is if he was a worse person. These people could perpetually be under the thumb of a complete psychopath who would torment them forever and they'd have no idea and couldn't do a thing to stop it.

I agree it's just a wonderful movie the way it is, but I wouldn't mind seeing a darker version of it either. I loved "The Edge of Tomorrow", too, which did have a darker setting overall but really was extremely similar in having a happy ending and being somewhat of a love story.

It's funny you talking about moving to a better place (for future vids to be shot) when I think your background is one of the nicest of the many reactors I watch. If anything, the only way to make it better is if it was like your opener animation, where you just get to sit back on yer sofa/couch, maybe with a comfy duvet, instead of sitting on a 'business' chair, lol. Btw, loved this reaction vid of you checking out this ole Murray gem.

Fun fact: the scene where they’re trying to get out of town during the storm was shot in my hometown Waukegan, IL. There’s a highway called Amstutz that doesn’t go anywhere, so movie productions use it because it can be shut down without having to divert traffic. The Batman Begins car chase was also filmed there.

I wondered about Phil learning piano in that situation. The movie allows for accumulating knowledge each day but he would not build up the strength in his hands. Playing a real piano for any length of time would be a strain but I guess an electric keyboard has less resistance in the keys.

It can be disheartening to show up on set & be slapped all day. I wouldn't like it, & I'd like it even less if my friend thought it was funny to call for unnecessary re-takes. I have no idea what their actual disagreement was about & it's none of my business. But as an actor there's only so many things I would be willing to do for a friend to help him make a movie. Cross that line & we're gonna have issues. & They appeared to have issues after this movie. I am happy to report they were able to come together as friends again before the death of Harold Ramis & that's the only thing & what matters most.

I watched this in the cinema when it first came out, back when Bill Murray and Andie McDowell were big stars, and I enjoyed it, but I thought it was nothing special. Just another Romantic Comedy. The critics weren't very kind about the movie. None of us knew we had just seen something special. It took a couple of rewatches when it was rerun on the TV to start noticing how hooked and engaged I was every time. I started wondering why I got a burst of joy when there was another rerun, why this had so much staying power a decade later. So I finally thought about what the message of the movie was, and it was a great one. It's not quite Zen Bhuddism, which is more detached, but it's very big on just being a good person, having a creative outlet, and an ordinary life will throw happiness back in your face, not as a reward but as a consequence. This is going to be a classic movie forever.

Great reaction! Now you need to do “Michael” with John Travolta. My wife watches this movie every year (you can guess when 🙄); she loves the redemption in the story. And yes, in the US Mid-West and New England area (except Maine … Maine only has two weeks of summer…) many smaller rural towns have Groundhog Day festivities for the very reason you mentioned … at that time of the year every nasty winter weather bound person needs a pick-me-up. Having grown up in the Mid-west, I had so much nostalgia for those months that I moved to the West Coast. 😂

According to the writers, 10,000 years is how long he was stuck in that day. I concur with that, it makes sense given everything he did and knew about that town. He learned french, he learned how to ice sculpt, he learned French poetry by heart, he became a medical expert, he knew every person in the town and what they faced. They only showed him doing it once, but obviously he lived that one version of the day a thousand times to figure out what everyone in the town needed. Also, this movie was filmed backwards. Harold ramis, who was the doctor with the X-ray of his head, was also the director. He knows Bill Murray as well as anyone. Bill Murray gets a bad attitude by the end of the movie. So he filmed it in reverse order so he started out nice during the end and got grumpier as it went on so by the beginning he was an asshole. And one last thing, the scene where the ice sculpture is done, the first time through he was looking at the camera at Andie McDowell's face and he forgot to yell cut because he was just mesmerized by her. She lives in Missoula Montana now, she's just such a wholesome person it's hard not to fall in love with her.

Early drafts of the script had him state that it was 10,000 years. However people actually doing the math on how long it would take him to learn all those skills all come to a figure of 33-35 years, which the writers have since agreed sounds about right. The 10,000 years from the original script did not make it into the final script.

@@ImpeccableZentertainment People who have estimated how long it would take to learn some of the skills Phil learned...improve piano playing, ice sculpting, learning the names and histories of the town people, etc...put his time of reliving the same day at around 30 years, which is close enough to 10,000 days. Harold Ramis who wrote and directed the film said that in his estimate, it was probably around 30 years. Maybe in some draft of the film it says 10,000 years, but 10,000 days just seems more likely. If all you had to do every day was learn to be a better person, it really wouldn't take that long to move from what Phil was to what he became. Probably 4 or 5 years. Ten tops.

I feel like this movie is a metaphor for going through depression. At first you feel awful, even irritable, and it feels like nothing changes or gets better, and there's eventually a point where you might feel an up because nothing you do or being done to you matters, and that feels like a kind of invincibility when what you're actually feeling is nothing, then the high falls off and it's just nothing and inevitable, and it takes a very long time before you start to feel things again and stuff starts to change or get better or different.
