They participated and sold slaves to the Spanish, but they weren't the backbone of the slave trade; they didn't own it or run it and didn't force those Spaniards to purchase slaves. When the slave trade ended, they were powerless to reinstate it.

Using lots of pistols with no saber was common with a lot of irregulars on both sides. Sabers made noise, glinted in the sun and were useless outside of close combat. Having multiple pistols made much more tactical sense.

Mosby wasn't a fugitive slave hunter. He also wasn't that big of a fan of the institution.

Most of the men on horseback back then fought with revolvers. The sabers were just for show and hollywood kept them in for some reason. You don't fight with the sabers. You'll get shot.
