Probably one of things that haunted him since the events of KK1. That either a win or a lost there wouldn't be any honor in it. Look at the ending of Karate Kid and how Johnny reacted when he was told to sweep the leg. He was horrified by his words!!! Johnny during Karate Kid may of been most of the movie a bully but at lease he saw the dishonor in fighting dirty. He was just not strong enough to defy Kreese. Btw Johnny's arc from KK bully to a guy trying to get his shit together and show Daniel that he was the same guy he was during HH and as Kreese's student.

what hawk did was obviously wrong and was cheating, therefore the DQ, but Miguel exploiting a weakness was in no way cheating....its no different than a boxer jabbing the eye of an opponent that cuts easily or taking a KO jaw shot when an opponent is tired and drops his guard

Bare in mind How I Met Your Mother played with a VERY similar idea years ago so the idea isn't necessarily 100% new and entirely unexplored. If you were "blown away" by Marve/Netflixl's Daredevil or The Punisher, Noah Hawley's Legion or Fargo, Better Call Saul in regards to being a prequel to Breaking Bad or even Into The Spider-Verse for using storytelling devices almost exclusively found in comics and the homage it payed to Kirby, Ditko, Stan and incorporating things like Ben Day dots which comes from Pop Art, which if you don't know comic history has a huge influence on comic art. I would understand and even agree with you but hey, it's all opinion and what we prefer at the end of the day.

I wonder if the story arc will be about ultimate reconciliation. Of course if that happens, that concludes the series. But it's a great way to conclude it, given the type of story it is. I hate getting philosophical here, but maybe the whole Karate Kid / Cobra Kai story is about the roots of conflict in this world (from person-to-person all the way up to entire nations). We've done so many dick moves to each other in the past that it's simply hard to trust others to not hurt us when we're down.

I kinda think that the series sort of forgets that ever happened, and I'm okay with that. It makes more sense now for Johnny to have been sore about his loss to Larusso from the get-go. I think the series evolves from that nicely with Johnny at the end of the first season coming to realize that Daniel did not ruin his life, Kreese did.

I think Johnny's first reaction in graciously accepting the defeat was true to him as a person but it was Kreese who turned that defeat into a humiliation that ate at him through the subsequent years. He's a good guy, just messed up.

Nothing has "flipped" as I see it. I can't recall anywhere in season one where Johnny taught them to attack when not in a combat situation. He taught aggression and commitment to resolve a confrontation as the victor, not to take unnecessary advantage of an opponent's misfortune or to strike when the fight is not on. It was always the LaRusso family that was drawing first blood in season one (even if not always intentionally).

Sequentially Compact though he did also teach no mercy. I doubt he'd ever agree to what Hawk did, but as for Diaz exploiting the weakness...meh if he wasn't fighting Robby, and if Hawk wasn't the one who caused the injury I wonder if Johnny would have cared as much.

I like your comment Mike. After seeing this clip, I can'y help but wonder if in Johnny's eyes that's the real reason for this conflict. He feels he should have won back then & knows he could do so even now. He followed the advice of Kreese against his (Maybe) better wishes & attacked a weakness that cost him the fight. His descent perhaps is about the loss of his honor & character after his 'dojo friends' turned on him. He returns to karate because it was what he was good at & it is who he is.

@@davycrocker4842 Not at the time of that first tournament. Before the matches begin, Ali informs Daniel that points may be scored by striking the head, sternum, kidneys and ribs. The crane kick would be classified as striking the head. It's only later in the time of the third film that they stuck in the rule of no contact to the face.

Nathan Woods I was only against cobra kai because of kreese when I was younger. Now that Johnny is trying to get his act together, Im for cobra kai. Still doesn't mean I would join his dojo in real life, because I'm all about peace; so miagi- do would be a better fit for me.

That was an interesting take to see things from Johnny's perspective. And it all does make sense. The only confrontation with Daniel from the original movie that Johnny doesn't talk about was when ye and the other Cobras cause Daniel to crash his bike. Kinda hard to not make himself out to he the jerk in that scene.

Kreese won't open a rival dojo. He will take Johnny's dojo away from him. Kreese owns the name and logo for Cobra Kai. It's his intellectual property. He could force Johnny out by threatening to sue him into oblivion. It may be a pussy move, but Kreese has his rich business partner Terry Silver backing him up. Johnny would be financially destroyed in a court case. In it's own way that would be showing no mercy.

I know they will NOT abandon those important lessons originally taught by John Kreese. ... I agree with you that if Johnny Lawrence does not go back to teaching the original lessons of John Kreese, there will be a disagreement between Kreese and Lawrence - which will result in Kreese being the teacher of Miguel and Hawk (likely because they applied the "dirty" lessons of "survival" taught by John Kreese).

Remember that Kreese was a Vietnam vet and had to play by a different set of "rules." You can take the guy out of the war, but the war usually goes home with him.

I wouldn't be surprised if Kreese would go out of his way to undo those beginning changes. In my opinion Johnny is a good, but bitter guy. The loss at the tournament back in the day was a trauma to him. He WANTS to do the right thing, but at the same time he's bitter and now he could fall under Kreese's influence again. Season 1 was AWESOME, but I feel like that was only the beginning of a dramatic, fun and entertaining journey with many twists :D

He was just beginning as a sensei and clearly hadn't thought much about the holes in his teaching of Hawk or Miguel. On the other hand, we have Daniel, who was also starting out as a sensei and could reasonably be expected to make his own mistakes with his own student. Fortunately, Robby ended up making only one real mistake (answering Hawk's trash talk at the tournament by insulting his haircut). The incident didn't consume either of them once it was the morning. For all of the issues Johnny is going to face this season (remedying his misfires, dealing with a rival dojo that doesn't need to charge for lessons, and facing off against his own sensei for who knows how many reasons), his relationship with Robby is likely going to stop being among them.

Miyagi was never a drunk and needed no redemption. He had his balance all along. He jumped in and helped Daniel when four hooligans attacked him. That was more dirty fighting by the way, four against one. Also note that adult Johnny in the parking did not strike the hooligans first nor did he "show no mercy" and really pound them. He warned them off and only kicked their butts when they attacked him, just like Miyagi would have.

So far it doesnt look like Daniel is doing anything bad. I think its cool he opened up the dojo to teach. I think he's misguided that Cobra Kai is inherently bad but he took several beatings from those guys. Pretty justified. And with Kreese back in the picture its interesting to see if he's right. Would be AWESOME to see Daniel vs Kreese. Or Daniel and Johnny vs Kreese.

@@picallo1 I think the creators had this role reversal in mind when they thought of the meta narrative that would guide the course of the show. From the outset, Daniel was cocky and spoke condescendingly to Johnny, while Johnny had seemed to have been humbled by the hand of cards he was dealt since they were kids. I hope they do follow this particular storyline, to show that people are not necessarily intrinsically good or bad. Often their characters undergo changes with time and change of circumstances.

That was only for season 1 and only sort of, its pretty clear Daniel for season 2 will be back to his old ways and honoring Myagi.I am totally fine with that he is Daniel after all, a good kid/man who needed to refind his way and purpose in life, but if they ruin Johnny or destroy him and make all his students leave him and treat him like shit by season 2s end then il really be pissed.Its also a shame cause Johnny and Daniel were working things out in episode 9 and having drinks together, then damn Robbie had to mess it all up and Johnny and Daniel overreacted so so much for any type of friendship or something of the sorts for now.Maybe by series end.

@@TheMan-je5xq Silver has or had the money to buy it during KK3. Thomas Ian Griffith had two different black belts in KK3. Only the main referee (a Chuck Norris student) was more accomplished. And he was extremely accomplished. I believe Thomas Ian Griffith actually had Tae Kwon Do and Karate black belts. Pat Johnson (head referee) was like a 8th or 9th degree black in Karate.

This will probably be Kreese's opening. Instead of being proud that Miguel won and Hawk made it to the semis, their sensei was angry and disappointed in them, called them pussies, and demoted them to white belts. I could see them feeling betrayed and angry at him, leading Kreese to step in and pump them up, telling them the important thing was that they won. And if they go with him, he'll make sure they'll continue to win.

@@leper73 Kreese and Terry Silver own the Cobra Kai name and logo. This was established in Karate Kid III. Technically Johnny is using the name and logo illegally. So I have a feeling Kreese will push Johnny out and take over after this, winning over the students like you mentioned. That may be Johnny's journey this season. To win his dojo, and his students, back. Who knows maybe he will swallow his pride and get help from Daniel, and earning his son's respect along the way.

I thought about that, but Kreese doesn’t strike me as someone who has much patience for lawyers. He probably wouldn’t wait for a legal process to go through.

I guarantee they will become friends in the end.
