We live in southeastern Illinois on a 41 acre homestead. We just finished building our log cabin in 2018. Now we are focused on trying to grow our own food and raise livestock. Follow us on our journey we continue to develop our homestead and farm, while becoming more self sufficient.

You may want to look at adding stock panels to the inside of your barn to keep the animals from damaging the steel walls.

This will be a much better place for the cows and sheep vs the back of the bank barn. I think some of the commenters fail to realize that both of you work full time jobs and then work your property while being KZfaqrs , all without any outside help. The amount you two accomplish is awesome. Most other channels I have seen all they do is KZfaq , don't have outside jobs. My property here in Kansas is smaller than yours and I have a full time job and am a single guy with zero outside help. So I fully understand how hard it is. Everything is always a work in progress.

You should start a bed pack for the animals. It will help keep them warm and comfortable. Laying on that gravel won't be very much fun for them.

I have never seen any farm animals ever raised on stone, it will destroy their hooves and get in between them, causing all kinds of problems, I would keep a watch on their hooves and make sure they stay okay.

Just a suggestion, add plywood to the bottom section of the Barn to keep hooves from going through the metal.

Every cow likes petting. Consider to install a really sturdy pole with some broom heads screwed to it. They'll LOVE it ;-)

How is the hog panel going to keep from moving when the cows go up to scratch on it or bed down next to it ? I worry about the hydrant. Maybe pound a couple rebar spikes near the hydrant. fingers crossed. I love watching your channel!

Your tractor looks a lot better with the ballast box 👍 Because you are rightfully concerned about stones, I'll suggest you but down a good layer of hay to start your bedding pack. If you put down fresh hay once a week - in a couple of weeks you won't even know that you have a stone base..

I like the new shed in concept… but I think you jumped the gun on the move… you need stock panels on the inside walls to protect the metal, and all the gravel needs to be removed, otherwise you’re going to be spreading it all over the farm when composting or spreading manure on the fields….I’d have spent the time on water diversion for the barn, and trenching a proper drain/buried culvert.. capturing the rain from the barn roof and keeping it off the barnyard seems a better solution to the muddy mess.

Nice barn for the animals in the winter. We used to take some of the older bales of hay and stack them around the outside of the building to kind of insulate it and keep the wind out. It works for awhile anyway.

every barn I have been in the farmer provides bedding for the animals. sawdust, wood chips , straw, hay. for comfort of the animals and compost cleanup. I think it might add a bit of warmth to. what do you think

The rain you will get is the rain we have been getting the last three days down here in Texas,. As of right now...(still raining) we have gotten about 16 inches in the last three days. They forecasted 3 to 5 inches over the whole time. Boy were they wrong on that one!!!!

I would add a roll hay to the floor to make beds and sleep on. The gravel will be very cold being on a frozen floor. Myia probably pulled enough hay out to make her a bed beside the hay rack.

Throw some junk hay on the ground to give em something nice to lay on, throw some kick boards up on the inside bottom 4ft or so to keep legs from going through the barn metal and this’ll make a nice spot for the critters.

Evan, If you could find a used brush from a power sweeper or snow sweeper, they make great scratch posts for cows to rub against…. With all the snow lately there ought to be plenty of them out there..

IF you put hay in the barn put it up on some pallets to make the clean up easier. also put some panels around the walls to keep the animals from pushing the tin off the sheeting board , been there done that. you can drop a tarp from the top of the door to keep from losing as much heat too

Great job here. The🎉 livestock will love it. However, as others have commented, you will need a good bedding pack, and the walls will need to be lined with plywood or 2x material. Otherwise, they will destroy the sheet metal.

A lime packed floor would be all you would need for your barn. That way when you clean it out and spread it, a little lime will help the fields. Considerably cheaper than concrete.

You need a cow door like a doggie door. So they go in and out during the day, but it will stay dry on the inside. Love when Maya explores the camera!!

The most ideal would have been a concrete floor,you'll krrp putting in gravel over the years of cleaning it out, and a couple of bostalls will be an asset in there as well.

I don't think you would have had any trouble with the sheep getting through the board fence. The boards are close enough together to keep them from getting through.

You have accomplished a lot this fall and winter. Some old hay covering those stones would be good, grinding their knees against stones when they are getting up is not going to feel very good and can cause a bruise and swelling-

The problem I see with the livestock in your barn is it has a gravel floor and when you clean it out this spring it's going to have gravel mixed in with the manure and what ever you use for bedding and you don't want to be spreading rock in your fields. Great videos and keep them coming

If you want the siding to stay intact you might like to put boards around the inside and if manure builds up it will also push walls out . Just saying

You have found a really nice stable for the animals, only a little thing is still missing, but still distributed a location on the feeding point on a spot on a stain on which the animals can lie down, it is not only very important for the health of the animals , but they also feel more comfortable. I wish you a good time.

I thought Rebecca would have jumped for sure when moving the hay ring and the mice came running her way but I don’t believe she even saw them. I was feeling for her at that moment. All the hard work is paying off the animals will enjoy the new area and you have put a lot of thought into making it. Maybe in the spring you can get a yard brush for the cows I believe they would definitely enjoy one. Another great video. Always look forward to seeing what’s next. Hopefully when you retire to the farm we get even more videos of the farm work. Stay warm and dry.

Why don’t you half fill your tyres with water , it was the only way we could get the weight on the rear tyres other wise the tractor bounced when you had a plough on , so when you have a 28 foot plough you need to have plenty of grip , had a big farm paddocks went from a thousand acres to a hundred , I like your show and love watching you use all the old gear , oh today’s temperature was 40c heading for the rest of the week , all the best from Australia 🇦🇺

Glad you fenced off the hydrant. You know how animals love to rub and break things or turn the water on. I have a similar situation in my barn and I really need to build something more permanent around it. thinking almost a sturdy frame with a door to keep livestock out and also allow me to open it up nicely for me to use. tall enough to be able to access the handle to turn on and off. Maybe with an open top so if the O'ring goes bad I can unscrew it, and have room to pull out the rod and 0'rings and replace them. I have the type you can repair it without digging.

Love you guys. We went through those cold Temps and half foot of sleet last week. Now it's day 4 of nonstop rain with highs in mid 60s and lows in mid 50s. Topsy-turvy winter. Question, why didn't you put hay or wood chips down to make it better for barnyard critters to lay and sleep on. I did that in my barn because lower fields are 1 foot deep in water now. Rain not scheduled to leave area till next weekend. No more drought situation here.

Hate to say it, but I agree with others who expressed the preference for some sort of bedding, especially when it rains outside and they walk in with the mud on their hooves and it freezes to the ground when it gets cold again and would not be a smooth surface. Don't want to be a kibitzer, just my preference and I know how concerned you are for them. It could be added to and cleaned out later. If straw is expensive, old hay would work well.

How can there be a 5 ton weight limit on your roads? The counties and Ohio highway department use dump trucks loaded with gravel to plow snow. Probably 20 ton total weight.

Glad to see the cattle chute going inside, expensive piece of eguipment to leave out to the weather, I've watched farmers try to use them once they get rusty and it can get dangerious
