I moved into my first studio apt in Chicago by myself and the fees included: First month's rent $995, application fee $65, move in fee $250 (no security deposit), basic renter's insurance $159 that was required by my landlord (monthly payments are an option). Other fees can also include pet fees ($100-400) and parking (+$100). This was the only apt I applied to so you will be spending a lot if you end up applying to multiple places. My tips would be - try to find a place that has windows, this will help keep your electric bill low - try to find a place that has as many utilities included as possible (heat, gas, electric). IMO, trash/sewage/water are things that you should NOT be paying for as a renter. - Shop at Ross/DD's/dollar stores or any thrift stores for furniture/bathroom/kitchen/decor. - Have at least the first 3 month's rent saved up. - Look for student/military discounts!! Xfinity offers student discounts for college students in certain universities (the list is on their website) - In unit laundry is a huge benefit (if possible)

Great advice!! Dollar Stores have saved me-they sell some great bake ware and cooking items along with many other products that you can stock up on (batteries, light bulbs, dish soap etc).

omg i completely forgot about renter's insurance! I paid a one-time fee for that and I'm covered for the year - it was probably around the same cost as yours! I also HIGHLY agree on the in-unit laundry point!

I’m just here to say that it’s okay if you move out and all you have is a bed and a dresser. I moved out and that’s how i started and stayed for 2 months. then i finally got a couch, then finally a table, etc. i have since fully furnished my place but it took a long time. prices add up and at the end of the day if all you have is a bed that is still something to be grateful and thankful for!!! i agree with the cat thing! i started with 1 and i now have 2 and they are the lights of my life. they keep my sane when i feel like i’m loosing my mind. if you can care for them and commit to them I highly recommend.

I really appreciate the transparency. I am 23 also and moving out seems like such a huge step in "adulting", so it has always been so intimidating to me. I am barely starting my career so I definitely need some time to establish myself financially and move out, but it is super helpful to start thinking about some of these things, such as saving up for a few months worth of rent in advance. Great video as usual!

Adding a plug for Dyson: Hannah is SO SO RIGHT. I have a 15 year old corded Dyson. It weighs a ton and yeah, it's old. But it's probably one of maybe five or ten things in my entire life that I am grateful every day to own. I get it serviced every six months or so and that's it. IT'S NEVER BROKEN DOWN. And it can suck a Volkswagen bus through a garden hose. Period!

This is so timely! 💕 I'm moving out this week, but I really needed to hear the section you made about the emotional and mental struggles of moving out. As an international student I've moved many times, but it never really gets any less daunting. Now I'm moving again for grad school, and I was upset at myself for not being able to "cope," as well as I thought I should be but hearing you say those comforting things felt so relieving and validating! Thank you, Hannah! 💖

You are so amazingly focused and together at your age...wow. It's incredible to see and makes me a bit embarrassed to admit how I first moved out. Long story short, I was 23, I'd just graduated from Cal Berkeley, I had a job of sorts, and I was miserable because I had a boyfriend of one year that I loved a lot, but my parents were so insanely protective that they would not even allow him to come over and hang out with me. IN THE LIVING ROOM. So I finally just gave up. I had a small savings account. My boyfriend was in his last year of college and only had a part time job, but his Mom loaned him a couple hundred dollars. We got together with a friend and rented a small, dark two bedroom apartment in Oakland for $550 a month. We coughed up first, last and deposit, and signed the lease. I packed up a couple of boxes of my books and clothes and moved out. A friend came by with his pickup and moved my bed and bookshelf, desk and a couple of chairs and lamps--that was all I owned. My boyfriend brought a couch and table donated by his Dad, and we bought kitchen stuff together. And that was that. Total cost per person, about $550. Granted, it was 1988 and a very different and more financially reasonable world. But still, that was a lot of cash for us. Sometimes you just gotta go for it.

I'm about to graduate college and, although I've technically been living away from home for the past 5-ish years, college apartment living (with roommates who are also students) is totally different from living on your own as an independent adult. I'm SO nervous, but videos like these really help as I'm figuring out where I want to be and what I want to do. I'm probably taking a gap year before grad school, so I just really appreciate your content, Hannah!! ilysm

I moved to my first (shared) apartment at age 18 and moved back to my parents 6 months later, it just didn't feel right. When I was 19 I found my dream apartment and I moved out again - for good this time. I wish I knew earlier that I didn't have to rush and move out as soon as I graduated just because a lot of my friends did... Thank you so much for sharing the "mental" point of view, you really validate my feelings.

Loved the video Hannah :) although I can't relate to the mental aspect of moving out myself because I went to boarding school early on and hence haven't lived with my parents since I was 15, but I see some of my friends still struggling with moving out even though they are now 23/24. Also I cannot emphasise enough how much more responsible and independent I have become since living by myself, so for me it was not only moving out from my parents but also living by myself. Loved that you also talked about the money aspects of moving out, that's so important.

Such good advice!! I can say when I moved out, it was not the best situation so having money saved was not there. However, I managed and learned as I went. I think that’s the one thing I can say is that living on your own is one heck of a learning curve-like the first time a light bulb burnt out, I realized I didn’t have any replacements. Same with batteries. It’s funny how we will have personal hygiene back ups, but house stuff you forget-and it’s not hard to get, it’s just a reminder of what you might need down the line. I am forever grateful that the building I rent in (also an old building converted to apartments), everything is included. I just pay for phone/internet. Do check for expenses and places that come with parking if you have a car. I’m lucky I had parking with every place I lived in. Laundry is another thing-this is the first place I’ve had with no laundry (sniff), but I have a laundromat down the street. So, not a huge issue ;)

This is a great video! I do just want to say that there are times in life when you have the oppurtunity to consider doing something, but that doesn't always mean you are ready. It has been really important for me to learn how to consider/ process my feelings seperatly from the physical state of a situation. Different things work for different people so I just wanted to add another perspective to the "how do you know you are ready" section of the video in case it is helpful for someone:)

I'm not from the states but in the MCOL area and I cannot imagine the amount that went into the first payment! Comes to show how crazy the rental market in NYC has gotten. We were lucky, and just needed to pay first month's rent, guarantor if needed and a credit check but I know some people near me have had to pay a deposit and application fee

This was super helpful as someone who is getting ready to start looking for a place and has tons of anxieties about it. If anyone has any tips for generally preparing to move out of your parent's house, with a pet, and a small income, I would love to hear it! :)

Hey Hannah! My boyfriend and I are in the process of moving into our first apartment in less than 2 weeks so this video could not have come at a better time :) During your video when you asked about if good faith deposits were a thing in other places I think that depends on the city or town you move to. Since NYC is such a popular place to live it only makes sense that there would be good faith deposits because apartments get taken off of the market so quickly, however where I'm moving (a city in the southeastern US of about 145,000) that wasn't the case. We each had to pay an application fee and then an admin fee which covers the cost of a criminal background check and credit check. These fees were non-refundable sadly, but weren't more than $150. Then once the application was approved we paid a security deposit, and the amount of the deposit depended on how good or bad your credit is. (The better the credit the lower the security deposit) Then obviously the rent once the lease was created. Hope this made sense and helped anyone out in the comments who are moving to a smaller area in the U.S.

I wanna be independent nowadays. I want more after watching the video. I agree with that a cat brings us how much loves it brings us because I have taken care of one dog. I have not felt missing out because of my puppy.
