Theres going to be a huge chunk of the older generation who are going to be dying alone, and will act like victims as if they didn't bring this onto themselves after traumatising their kids. All I hope is that the younger generation can break out of this generational trauma.

Toxic its a big big risk and it often doesnt work. You have to plan a lot. You need to know where you are going, double check they really want you there, be ready to get a job, be ready to start acting like an adult, be ready for your parents to play all sorts of nasty games and throw threats at you. You may even have to talk to the police. Be ready to being very poor for a few years while you gain money and experience. And be ready for freedom of choice. Its very scary at first. Oh and be 18. You cant legally do any of this until you are 18. 17 and 10 months does not count.

I feel suffocating being around them. My dad constantly reminds me that my life isn't just mine. I cannot help bit feel like they own me and I hate it. I can't wait to be 18 so that I can run away.

Your mum telling you that she would harm herself sounds like a narcissistic abuse tactic tbh. You might want to read up on narcissistic traits and narcissistic parents (if you haven't already) though fair warning, it can be really tough if you learn that it describes your own parents. I went through a period of grieving - I am still going through it - because I learnt that narcissists are incapable of change and that I'll never have the healthy parent-child relationship I've always dreamed of.

This story hit home for me so much. I actually ran away at 21 with my boyfriend (now hubby), he’s African American. My parents didn’t like him at all and was just so out of touch with who I was as a person. I blocked them and ended up not talking to them for a year and half, they were only able to reach out through email. After covid, I decided to give them another chance and we ended up working on our relationship. A few years later, I can say that we have developed such a beautiful relationship based on BOUNDARIES and understanding. They absolutely love my husband and we take yearly trips together now. It’s still the best decision I made to this day.

Your story has really inspired me. I live with very strict parents and the exact same thing is happening to me. They found out about my boyfriend and they put me on lock down; took away my phone (that I was paying for with MY money), made me quit my job, and they didn't even let me attend my own graduation. This all happened even when I was 18. I'm 18 still now, about to turn 19 in 2 weeks, and I still live here... I'm so scared to just leave because my mom says things will go very bad for me if I leave and she will try and find me if I do leave. I am so scared to leave... any advice ? Thank you for sharing your story ❤️ As an Indian woman myself, I totally relate with this. I was 17 when I “ran away.” My dad was always abusive, and my family controlled and manipulated my life. When we moved to the States, I decided I was done with his abuse! My friends at school told me how I can get help and told me about foster homes. So a few months later when my dad hit me again I got the courage and ran away. I was in foster care until I was 21. I was very lucky to have my foster parents. I felt safe and loved. I’m 28 now, and I don’t have any relationship with my dad or my family just some cousins and my brother. I have a wonderful fiancé, his family and my friends. So blessed to have them. You’re so strong and brave ❤️

i also ran away from home when i was 20. i wish this video was out when i ran away back in 2020. i remember it vividly. my mom was verbally abusive, demanding, and went as far to tell my dad i was “pregnant” and forced me to take photos with my “belly” and even made a fake dating account using my name and my pictures. i remember i was so stressed, i very much started dissociating and didnt get my period for months. i started to get close with a friend i met a work and i remember i started looking for roommates and posted on my private snapchat story that i may have found someone. one of my older coworkers swiped up and told me she had a room available and her roommate was moving out. i told her i wanted to move in, and the rent was super cheap. everything was working out, it was amazing and then i told my friend who i was working with that i wanted to leave and he was my getaway car. it was 8pm when i got out of work that day (my mom did not like that i worked overtime and threatened me to quit my job over the phone that same day.) i remember being silent while she screamed at me while i was at work and thinking well im not going to be living there for long. i got out at 8pm and ended up packing my things in a garbage bag once i knew my mom was sleeping. i remember majority of my things were in a garbage bag already, so i just added some more things. i ironically was in a room that had a door that led to the exit of the back of our house. my friend pulled up and we drove off. the next day my mom went to my job and went crazy, texted me telling me she was going to get me fired. i already told my manager about her so she got banned from my job. for those waiting for the right time to move out, make acquaintances and friends, they will be the ones to help you!! you got this.

Of course children want the relationship with their parents but if parents are selfish and don’t think how their actions are harming the children, then it is better for the child to stop the abuse by leaving. Some parents think they own the children and the children are there to make the parents happy. It is very twisted and it hurts me to see that happening so often.

most people who grew up with normal not authoritative parents will think “oh so u had good parenting” but they dont know how much this damaged us and how it can rlly create a lot of anger and resentment growing up i understand this sm because im still living at home with my parents. their somali but very racist anti black and traditional they found out about my plans to move out through my school counselor and made me quit work they dont want me to move out at all like my brother finished collge had a high paying while in college and after graduating and yet they wont let him move out their not concerned about finances their narcissistic and want complete and absolute control over me and my siblings. i get verbally/mentally abused and physically the other day i was sitting and my mom scratched me acorss my face and started hitting me cus i didnt pray on time im 16 btw my sister is honestly just like my parent racist narcissistic self absorbed conceited and an overall tocxic person shes the one who takes over when my parents are not yelling at me or sabatoging my life ik i sound so drmatic and i wish i could articulate how weird and toxic my family is but that would be like a 10 page narrative and leave it at this. im honeslty just so proud of u and rlly look up to u because i think ur a wonderful brave woman and im so happy u were able to recognize how unreasonable ur parents were and how they were stunting ur growth emotionally and spiritually this video is one of the best videos ive come across on youtube not only did u tel ur story and was raw and honest but u did so we felt less alone ur a truly beautiful person

As a brown girl with parents migrated from village to a metropolitan city it's hard for me. My dad is super conservative he tells me what to wear, where to go, how to walk, how to talk. Never encouraged me to study he just wants me to sit in the house till i get married. Since childhood he made me feel dumb to crush my self confidence but now i came to know about his true intentions. He is a misogynist and basically doesn't want any woman to succeed in her life. My mom is more educated than my dad but he never allowed her to work. Never go out other than for school or college, at home by 6 pm anyhow, don't wear sleeveless clothes, jeans should be loose and top should be tall, never apply makeup, always walk straight, not supposed to talk to any guy, never talk back even if he's at fault, don't laugh too much, never cry infront him, your mom and you are the dumb one in the house. He says he can treat me however he likes coz I'm a girl i can't just run away from my home they are saving up dowry for me so i owe them unlike my brother. It's hard but i hope i can get out of this bullshit and have some freedom.

hearing your story really gave me hope that things will get better. a bit about me: im Vietnamese and Canadian and turning 21 soon. i just completed my third year of university and im planning to move out this September into transitional housing (basically i pay rent and everything as usual but it’s a lot more affordable and affiliated with a non profit organization to help support us with our long term housing goals and mental health). seeing ur story and the stuff u went thru and how far uve come gives me hope that healing is possible. i was talking to my therapist today of how hard it is for me rn bc i have so many thoughts in my head. i know ill miss my family once i leave but i also know that staying is not an option anymore considering everything they put me thru. this may be an irrational fear of mine but im so scared to get into a relationship or have children bc i don’t wanna project my trauma into them or repeat the cycle of abuse that my family put me thru. i always hear that victims of abuse r more likely to become abusers themselves and that rly scares me and worries me bc i want to be a good parent / partner. if anyone has advice or can reassure me, i definitely need it right now :/

you acknowledging your parents' flaws shows that you're aware and that's a big step already. although it makes sense for history to repeat itself (since the parenting style you received is the only one you know of) but having a therapist too shows so so much about your efforts to break the cycle. i'm proud of you and can assure you that your chance of being like your parents is already much slimmer. stay strong and be hopeful. you're deserving of so much.

Thank you for sharing. The description of your mother sitting on her couch while you are trying to study and or just wanting some space for your self is so relatable with my mother while I was going to a community college near my home as well. Looking back, I honestly regret not taking a gap year from college and instead save up some money from working and rent out a studio apartment for myself (was also near my community college) with other college age room mates. That would have gave me more piece of mind as well as keeping a healthy distance from my mothers codependency😩 I have also had my parents report missing person on file at my community college police department for coming home late at night.

being someone who has been sexually abused multiple times at around the same age and being brown and having strict parents…This is the most relatable video of all time. I developed ticks and ocd as a child because of this trauma and 3years after it happened and i was dying on the inside, i confided in my mom even though i had issues with her and this was the best decision….from then on i did not get justice or am not able to completely forget or get over what happened but my mom gave me my privacy and tried to respect and communicate with me more which now resulted in me being and independent women not trying to run away from home. she helped me keep distance from that guy keeping him away, as far as possible and i just couldnt be more grateful. to all the girls crying right now and relating to this video wanting to hurt themselves… u should know u r not alone and that u will be okay. just one day at a time guys❤

But I moved out at 18, and keep my distance with them now as I continue to heal. It’s ok to love your parents from a distance to preserve your mental health.

I remember the day I had the courage to leave home. My parents were on vacation and I used that time to move out. I remember being so happy to be on my own!

Omg wow. I'm so happy things worked out for you. I am so sorry you had to deal with so much when you were younger. I'm happy you got out of that and had support/love outside. I'm happy you got the chance to be free and welcomed by "Lilly" parents I know is hard when parents are strict. I hope things are a bit better with them. I hope you're better and more at peace. You deserve that 100 percent :) I'm so proud of you girl. God is great and was on your side that day. Not everyone sadly gets the chance but I know when you have a chance sometimes you gotta take it. I am so grateful you did!!!!!!!! God is great🙏🏻🙏🏻❤❤Sorry if i sounded rude not my intentions, or wrote some things twice. It takes a lot of guts to be on camera and talk about all of these things. I hope people who are going thru something similar find these. You inspired a lot including me. Not going thru anything just mentally but staying positive. Thank you again❤❤🙏🏻🙏🏻

This was a really great video you are a strong woman. I am 19 my girlfriend is 18 we have been together almost 3 years at this point and she is Turkish and Muslim she has very strict parents, pretty much how you describe your parents reacting to Cameron was the same for us. Your video means a lot because I been trying to find someone with a similar story that could just make me feel better and have hope. Thank you and I really hope your relationship with your parents can become better and they could be there for your wedding I know I would want her parents to.

I am a very similar situation. Turkish with very strict and religious parents. I’ve been with my boyfriend for over 3 years and they don’t know about it. I have a horrible life and not allowed to go outside or do anything. Im thinking of running from home 😢

Sorry to hear all that. Parents sometimes or in fact alot of times in a certain age of your life are strict for a good reason and canbe said as it's tough love. But other parents do unfortunately have a controlling mentality which is not right. I hope your parents come to realise that they were wrong to treat you the way they did and welcome you back.
