We finally got the boxcar and caboose moved to the site! The boxcar will become 58's new enginehouse while the caboose will become the J&L Narrow gauge's main office. Support our efforts at youngstownsteel.org

Amazing, just Amazing America could be in a bad time but seeing this railroad grow only gives me hope for a brighter future. Nothing is impossible, the whole world can be gone and yet people can *still* find a way to build. Maybe one day, just one day this railroad can grow and expand more and more, more and more until it's a huge thing.

great additions, thanks Rick.Maybe attach the insulation to one or both of the plug doors incase you wanted to have them open in warmer weather for more room. And a big thanks to CSX for their donation!

Way to go, Rick! So happy to see these acquisitions and a very interesting equipment move! I've been with you since the first video, I hope to have the chance to head your direction this summer to ride and enjoy a first-hand view of the J&L operation! Thanks for keeping us all informed!

I can speak from experience when i say you will really want at least 5-6 feet on each side of a steam locomotive, regardless of size, especially if you intend on firing it up in there. Regardless of the practicality, it will be neat at the very least.

a spur leading into the car would be a lot easier than a transfer table! IF if course you have the space.
@YoungstownSteelHeritage2 жыл бұрын
The opposite is actually true, since to have the equivalent number of storage tracks that a transfer table could provide would involve building about five turnouts and much more track. Each turnout is $3,000 just for the frog, guardrail, points and plates. We can do the concrete for the cost of the first turnout and build the table for the cost of the second turnout.

You should really think about doing concessions or something. There is a reason every museum has a little gift shop. It’s a good way to make a pretty steady little extra cash to fund the next project or continuing operations.
@YoungstownSteelHeritage2 жыл бұрын
I have been working on this quite intently. We will have the usual selection of t shirts and J&LNG specific merchandise as well as a selection of railroadiana including books and collectibles, on up to large items such as grade crossing lights and signs. We will also have some merchandise of interest to steam engine operators such as steam cylinder oil and maybe even graphite smokebox paint. I intend for our gift shop to be a general store of railroad and steam related items, and not the typical T shirt and Thomas the Tank Engine selections that predominate many museum gift shops these days.

Did I see that they lifted that trailer to put more arch in it for the load?
@gravelydon70722 жыл бұрын
Yep. And when they loaded it, it sank under the weight. If they hadn't adjusted it, it would have been sitting on the ground.

@@elsdp-4560 Ownership still remains with VMT. We waited three years for NS to make a simple move of getting it out of their yard and over to VMT so that we could do the air brake work and move it out. Even though they moved hundreds of their own locomotives in and out of storage in that yard in that time period, they did not have time or desire to move our loco, basically holding it hostage. Had the move happened within a reasonable time, while the momentum behind the project was still high, we could have raised the rest of the money we needed and got it done. But in those three years, we moved forward up here with NG projects, we lost momentum on the fundraising and I no longer have time to pursue it. What we raised would only have covered the purchase of the locomotive. I had nothing in the bank for the air brake work and the 10K for the freight rate to actually move it. So on top of the 12K purchase price I would have had to come up with another 20K or more just to move it, and then we have a rusted hulk that would require another 20K or more to make look presentable. There was a brief opportunity to take it to a place where there were people who would have done some of that work on a volunteer basis, but that opportunity also closed after so long. I am rather upset that it did not work out, but I was powerless to do anything except watch the project die while NS screwed around with their PSR based gutting of the Roanoke terminal.

It's very weird to have a boxcar become an enginehouse but I have a question was the boxcar enginehouse concept you're idea or would it be too expensive to build a brand new enginehouse?
@gravelydon70722 жыл бұрын
As mentioned in the video, it is considered just a box sitting on the ground by the local government. Compare that to a building that would require all sorts of permits. Big cost savings.
@EvilTurkeySlices2 жыл бұрын
@@gravelydon7072 they will probably do a proper building later. You have a good point about cost though.
