Moving to Florida? Guide for New Residents 🌴 DMV, Car Registration, Retiring, Pets, SunPass

Lots of you out there are planning to move to Florida or purchase a second home here. If you're looking to establish residency in the Sunshine State, here are some practical tips. (Yes, you do have to go to the DMV)
Disclosure: I am a Realtor, so I help people buy and sell houses. I am not an attorney or accountant. These matters can be complicated, so if you have any questions please consult a licensed professional.
ESTABLISHING FLORIDA RESIDENCY
You are considered a Floridian when your true, fixed, and permanent home is in Florida.
DRIVER'S LICENSE & VEHICLE REGISTRATION
If you are a new resident you must get your Florida Driver’s License and register your vehicle within 30 days of establishing residency in the state of Florida.

PET REGISTRATION
A Florida pet license is required for all pets. Florida pet registration forms are available at any local veterinarian. Both dogs & cats over 4 months old must have a pet license, and all are required to have rabies inoculations or booster shots. All Florida pet registration fees will vary from county to county, so check your county’s website.
HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION
Florida residents can apply for a Homestead Exemption. You get a discount on the assessed value of your home. It also caps the amount that your assessed value can go up each year to only 3%. This is a great tax benefit that Florida homeowners enjoy. Your deadline each year for registering is March 1st, so don’t forget! You will do this through your County Property Appraiser office or website.
E-PASS / SUNPASS
Florida has a lot of toll roads and a lot of them don’t have pay booths. If you live in an area with toll roads or plan on doing a lot of exploring in Florida, you will want to get a SunPass or an E-Pass.

FINDING EMPLOYMENT
Start online by putting your resume up on websites like Indeed, CareerBuilder, Monster, and LinkedIn. Recruiters are always looking for perfect people to fill jobs for their clients. Service industry jobs are listed on these websites too, so do a job search and see what comes up. If you interested in a government job with the State of Florida there is a website in the description that will allow you to search for those jobs. Please remember that if you are in the medical field or an educator, we always need you own here in Florida!

RETIRING TO FLORIDA
If you are planning on retiring to the Sunshine State there is a website for the Department of Elder Affairs that actually provides a lot of useful knowledge. On that website there are a ton of links, including a link to 55+ communities by county, info on assisted living facilities, veteran affairs, and a link to the Older Floridians Handbook. This handbook provides a whole bunch of important information, I highly recommend you download it. I put the link in the description. Check it out if you are coming to our beautiful state to retire.

Hi Melanie, i am planing to move from NY to FL in September 1. I am a realtor here in NY. If i get RE license in FL and sign with the broker to work as a real estate agent (in Sarasota in my case) , will this be considered as a "having job" when applying for an apartment rental?

If anyone is wondering, I just registered my 2 cars in Florida (April 2022) from out of state and the cost to register was 3 dollars short of a grand! If finances are tight make sure you budget for this.

This is true. It was $540 for one vehicle for only a license plate, title and two year registration.

When I drove down to Florida from Minnesota to meet my realtor, she didn't mention anything about the toll ways. That was quite a surprise when I rolled up on the first one. I stopped my car dead in its tracks between the two options (Cash, Eplate) trying to figure out which one I should take. I wish all realtors, like yourself, told their clients about those tollways.

MOBU Hey, I moved to Miami last year and just moved to Miami Beach last month. I love it. Miami is the perfect city for me, it’s full of flavor, diversity and culture. Also, theres so many different neighborhoods with a variety of feels, so I’m sure you’ll find a community for you if you choose Miami. Fort Lauderdale is nice as well.

A friend of mine kept a home in FL and a home in CT and spent about the same amount of time in each working in an environment where he can work from home and did so in both locations for a company from CA. CT told him that despite him having spent the appropriate number of days in Florida, changing his address on all bank accounts, getting a DL, changing voter location, and registering cars and personal watercraft in FL they did not care. It went to court and the judge ruled for my friend all because his dog and wife spend more time in Florida than he does. The judge in CT said that because the dog is in FL then that is where his real home is.

They charge registration fees based on weight as well. The lighter your vehicle the less expensive it is.

My understanding of moving there has been that the minute you start working there is when you have to get a drivers license, as well as vehicle registration and tile. If you don't work but are just there 4 or 5 months a year you don't have to do that.

Thinking of moving back to Florida I lived in tampa 4 years ago and could possibly be coming back. I lived in Hillsborough County at that time by the University, so I will apply for some handyman jobs and give it a shot.

Thanks for the info on Homestead. My kids just bought a house in Riverview. We were renting in the Carrollwood/Citrus park area since 2016. (2 Different houses) Tip - If you are going to rent make sure you take video with proof of date of any problems with the property. The last place we rented sent us a $5,000 plus bill for damages that were already present before move in. One such item was the water filtration system. All of this was noted on the form the agent filled out but then did not give us a copy. Fortunately we did take video and are now waiting for a response from the company that owns the property. This is the second time we have had this problem.

I am super super nervous. I have an incredible opportunity to live and help take care of family property in Florida. It's country...but it's not too too far from towns and cities to work. I have experience in a trade, I should be able to find work. I'm just so scared. I've been here in NY my entire life, I don't know anywhere else. I guess change is always scary

My wife is a teacher with highly qualified credentials. She received ten offers from ten different school districts without one formal interview. She had a job lined up six months before we moved. I had a job in the logistics field a week after I got here. Jobs are not hard to find if you are willing to work your way up.

My husband decided to go ahead of me and our children to look for a job the beginning of March and was also waiting for the National Guard to transfer his unit from NY to West Palm. The Coronavirus Virus hits & his transfer goes through when he had to report back to NY to drill. So now everything seems thrown off. He should’ve started his job that was lined up and found a place for us. He’s been active with the Guard now while the kids and I are stuck at my parents 😩. I wanted to get acclimated to the area before the kids would start school. They get out in June here and now it seems like we have to rush since school start in August :/ My husband is okay and never contracted the virus and his contract ends the end of June. First we were looking to move to Port Saint Lucie and Now we are looking into Ft. Lauderdale. Such a stressful time.

This information is so helpful thank you. As I watch this snowed in up north in the New Hampshire mountains plotting my next move. .....No income tax here as well..... but we do not have sales tax. Interesting that you do sales tax by county. Don’t forget to mention no estate tax in Florida to your retirement clients....

I’d love to move to the state of Florida from the UK. It’s almost impossible! Being 25 I don’t have $100k+ to invest and I’m not a doctor. :( looks like it’s just a load more rain for me. I really enjoy watching your videos to see what real life in Florida is like.

I can't find any Florida state laws on pets needing a license. Just states they need up to date shots by a licensed vet.

An up to date rabies vaccination is required and "your" county will issue a tag that is required to be worn by your cat or dog. You are also well advised to have your pets inoculated for other viruses and diseases. Heart worm is carried by mosquitoes and both cats and dogs should be treated prophylactically. Fleas are vicious and relentless. They also carry cat tapeworm. If fleas get into your house you are in for misery.

That's like saying, "I'm thinking of buying a cake, which one should I buy". We have no frame of reference nor your preferences. Do you like cities? Do you like the beach? Do you like country? Do you like living close to people or more private? East coast or the Gulf? You start with listing what you want and go from there.

auto insurance is 3x more expensive here then up in RI. Fl makes sure it makes up that loss revenue another ways. stay away!

You do realize that the state doesn’t get money from insurance. The cost is high, because there is greater risk, because of an older population.

Florida doesn’t get any revenue from the sale of insurance. The insurance companies do. They can’t make up lost revenue, when the money goes to State Farm or Auto Owners.
