I love this video. It feels like I'm not alone. I too moved to Australia (Sunshine Coast) during the pandemic in March 2021 with my Australian partner after living in Asia for 7 years. Honestly, I'm still not sure if this is home. It took me around 8 months to settle (accept everything as it is). Still terribly homesick. Moving here, I realized that my partner and his family have a posh Aussie accent. So not everyone speaks and projects like Cate Blanchett, not that she's family or anything, just an example. You're lucky to be in a city. Everything closes early here, and our idea of fun has changed from indulging in the vibrant nightlife and hidden underbelly of Asia to having a civilized dinner at 6, which is really what we look forward to every other week. We definitely cook more and entertain people at home, then go to bed at 10. So we feel very mature. We also drink more too for some reason. We picked up camping, which we haven't done before. It's a hassle to clean up afterward, but we enjoy it. Regional QLD towns are just lovely. We live by the beach, which was great at first but we're now facing the serious downsides of coastal living (salty air, maintenance, rusty furniture) and it has been a wet and stormy summer - not good! All in all, life is slow, uncomplicated, and predictable. We would love to go to WA and see the Kimberley!

When it’s wet in perth it’s dry up north. If you don’t like the wet in perth just take a few trips up north - shark bay or further. You can’t do shark bay in summer anyway - there’s a really weird trade wind that blows 24/7 for months over summer and while it cools the peninsulas it’s very unpleasant (the Dutch used to use that wind to cross the Indian Ocean, then turn left up to Jakarta, that’s why there’s so many Dutch ship wrecks). So best time for up north is outside of summer. And there’s always Bali if you get really desperate. Perths version of Spain.

I lived in P-town for more than twenty years. It's very isolated and backward, situated in the middle of nowhere between the ocean and the desert. Beautiful, sterile, squeaky clean, soulless and insanely expensive. The last time I was in WA, it felt like a Police State as well. Good luck.

There is a lot more greenery in NSW and amazing national parks for hiking. You would like Wollongong and it is green . There is beautiful coastal walks in Kiama and Geringong . This is where the country side meets the ocean . Western Australia has amazing national parks , sand dunes and clearest white sand beaches .British people have to understand that Australia can suffer from droughts and that is why the grass is so dry . I hope you get to visit Esperance and the whitest and bluest waters in the world . I am planning to go to the Kimberley just after the wet season and it becomes so green with many waterfalls. I hope you travel there too !You are a lovely well spoken lady and you have coped well with all the stress you went through while moving to Australia.Most do enjoy the outdoors but sone don’t in Australia. The same in the UK . All my relatives in England work a lot and on their days off they visit people . In summer me and my family go to the beaches and the only time we don’t if the temperature is over 40 degrees Celsius . During winter we go bush walking especially in the Blue Mountains . People do barbecues at recreational parks with family . So I disagree with you that people in the UK are more outdoor people . It depends on what taste each person has . Sone people love the city life and sone people enjoy walking amongst nature . I visit Mount Annan botanical gardens and their are walking paths and picnic areas there . I guess it is the way you interpret what people do . If you ever visit Sydney , go to North Wollongong beaches and walk the long stretch of beaches there . Even better go to Bundeena and do the coastal walk to Garey beach which is about 10 km or more . I see a lot of locals walking this path . Maybe the people in Perth stay home a lot but not in the East coast of Australia . Best of luck with what ever you do . Enjoy life , no matter where you live .

Now you can really get to experience Australia due to the borders reopening! Perth is so different to the other states,. Perth really does summer well but I think Melbs and Hobart know how to do winter and embrace it. . Its almost part of our identity and if you think the coffee's good in Perth wait till you go to Sydney and Melbourne. Remember too what peeps want from their states and climates are totally subjective!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on Perth. I lived in Auckland, New Zealand for 10 years between 2007 and 2017 before returning back to the UK. Coming back to the UK has been my only regret through life. Fortunately I acquired NZ citizenship before I came back. Reason I came across your video is that I am thinking of making the move to Perth. Since I have NZ citizenship, It also gives you the ability to work and live in Australia unrestricted as Australia and NZ have reciprocal agreements to be able to live in each others country, so definitely get your citizenship before you return. Good luck on your adventure.

I know you guys visited Margaret river, but try to check out Yallingup and the Dunsborough area if you get the chance. My partner and I recently visited family/friends in Albany for my birthday 🎊, we then drove along the coast to Hamelin Bay then to an Airbnb near Yallingup, absolutely beautiful area; heaps of wineries, breweries, bakeries and eateries. We also sussed out Dunsborough and Busso 👍🏼. Heaps of snorkeling and gorgeous beaches as well. Top places around there: natural spa, canal rocks (massive stingrays chill out there) and Bunker Bay beach. Deeeeeevine!

Hi good video. Which leads me to a couple of questions, if you could spare the time. Is it difficult to find new friends, and are the people in Perth or WA closed off or open people? Also my girlfriend and I don't really like snakes, spiders and alot of other bugs, because of that is it stupid of us to consider moving to Perth or WA in general? 😂
@CatLScully
@CatLScully Жыл бұрын
If you’re open to it and put yourself out there, yes it’s easy(ish) to find friends! Best way i found is to try join the groups of other people new to Perth. I generally found that people who’ve lived here forever are already set up with their friendship circles so aren’t actively looking for more, although I’ve made some great friends with people I work with (who are from Perth). Haha, no it’s not stupid. When we lived in an apartment we never really saw any bugs or spiders, now we’re in a house we see a few more in our outdoor area but it’s nothing major. And never see snakes! If you’re planning to live in the hills however it’s a bit of a different story from what I’ve heard lol

I have lived in Perth all my life (am 37) and have only ever seen 3 snakes in the wild. 2 in one day while walking around a salt lake and the other while walking down a less frequently used beach path. You don't usually see them slithering around the city or anything. Lol. If you're walking through the bush a lot I guess you'd expect to see more. In Queensland you'd see them more often.

So surreal watching this as an Australian who has moved to the UK- I can't stand the heat so I would definitely time my return for winter, if I ever return- you're so right about the 'outdoor lifestyle' myth; English people are much more outdoorsy- going for walks in all weathers. In Aus you can't walk in the summer because of the heat and in the winter no one goes out if the ground is even lightly damp haha. I'm always fascinated by people leaving their home country- like I've been think of moving to the Netherlands and listening to Dutch people who have left when I want so much to move there (and to be a citizen and have it be easy) is so strange. I guess it's a good thing we're all so different- keeps the world turning. I will say the Australian accent is very similar to the more neutral English accents in ways that people don't realise so I'm glad someone else has noticed. Most early immigrant to Australia were English so it makes sense that it's similar. Final point: yes, the salaries here are rubbish but you're also in Perth so the Aus salaries are amazing, I was living in Sydney where housing is so, so expensive so a minor paycut in the UK still means housing is affordable in my eyes, travel is also much cheaper because everything is closer together- food prices and cost of living generally have gone up in the UK though not driving helps a lot and you don't need to drive in the UK.

After the UK, this is the biggest rip off on the planet. It is not advised to move here (anywhere) if you are not in your twenties. Think carefully, as all you are doing is slogging and paying taxes.
