My POV, married 12 years, 4 kids, very similar relationship issues starting the business. I recommend you schedule your life to a T, plan date nights, family time, I schedule it in my CRM. Tell her no sometimes, canceling work for a day puts you behind, you now work the weekend and she’s complaining because your working to much. Your so used to trying to please her but she wants you to be in charge, fill your masculine roll and establish boundaries. It’s taken me a long time to figure this stuff out and I’m by no means perfect, spent a lot of nights lying awake wondering how to manage everything. I’m a huge advocate for sticking it through the tough times, just remember “this too shall pass”, a relationship has seasons, just like your life. Things will be great and then you’ll fight for a while, that’s just how it is, those tough times are what build the relationship. People jump around from partner to partner chasing that puppy love feeling when it wears they find a new one. What they don’t know is that there is great fulfillment in getting through those tough seasons together. Best of luck.

Before starting a business one really needs to make sure they are on the same page as their spouse. If they will hate you working 12+ hour days, need a good income immediately, will hate you being stressed etc. starting a business may not be the right decision. I had to have conversations with my wife to help her see the vision. There was a time I offered to sell my business because it was a big burden. We pushed through and it has all been worth it. We are extremely happy we pushed through and that we are where we are now. Good luck mate!

You show up when you say you will. You communicate when you have a delay. You don't over charge. You do the job even if you don't need it for a good week. Stay out of the bars. Wear good shoes. Invest in good equipment. Do the job better then the other guy. Network. Don't treat your biz like a 40 hours a week gig. Have professional invoices. Smile. Look people in the eye when you talk to them. Learn customer's names of their cats and dogs and use them. Have a clean and organized truck. Emphasis clean. Get every dead leaf. I had a good plumbing biz for 35 plus years and I think what helped me in the long run was doing that last drain clear at the end of the day when I already had a good day. Those customers calling me in the slow periods helped immensely. Treat complaints and mistakes as an opportunity to cement a customer for life by satisfying them quickly. Mistakes happen, fixing them quickly not as much. 😂

I think the best way to approach the subject would be opening with"Hunny, I want to take the family on a cruise. But this is what we need to do finacially to do that." Then bring out the big conversation. Putting a positve goal in her mind will be the start of getting her on board.

What has worked for me is scheduling my off time. Maybe it’s a day when I make sure I’m home at 5 pm. It only needs to be about twice a month which is completely doable. However I need to treat those like I would an appointment with a new client. I will not cancel or be late on those nights. I have a custom woodworking business and trust me the constant hustle is the same. The late nights, deadlines, & headaches are the same. The stress of supply costs, machine breakdowns, and employees is the same. At the same time I need to remember I am also a wife, and my husband has been extremely supportive of the business. I don’t think that it’s too much to ask for me to make sure he knows our life together is important too. I think if you want both you can have it, but it takes work. Ive had to learn delegate assignments so I can be home at a decent time once in a while

Under common/default circumstances for everything, if you were to divorce, your wife would inherit half your net worth aka she would inherit half your debt being $50k. On top of that, as you have 0 or negative income, she would have to pay you child support. So confront her on these facts that if the business goes under and she divorces you she's screwed as well. What you need to do is set aside a budget for bare minimum of living, meaning rent + food + essentials, and use all remaining surplus cashflow to pay down your debts asap. You need to reduce your interest burden. Best of luck

Fantastic video Mike! Very well articulated and thought out responses. To anyone that finds this helpful, I would like to greatly encourage everyone to prioritize their families first. Especially in the case of marriage. If you don't honor the vows that were made on your wedding day, perhaps the most important person to you at that time in your life, then how can your customers, employees or coworkers expect any different? When contemplating your decisions, please imagine your life years down the road. The return investment into a family will far out way whatever money has come and gone during that time. My prayers go out to Tiwana and his family. Love you guys!

You have to have those uncomfortable conversations with your spouse. They’re difficult but it’ll drive the wedge deeper between the both of you if you’re not in the same page about the goals and finances. My wife and I had that conversation a year ago. It was bad until we had the conversation and we both spoke and laid everything down. Now we have been hitting huge strides in life our debt is down 60% and have been making profit in our concrete business. We are proud on what we built for our kids.

Before you call it, go to relationship counseling. You both are right. She and the kids deserve to have your attention but on another note, you have to work no matter what to cover the bills. You guys may never fully see eye to eye but you can find a common understanding.

not in the same spot but with me and my brother trying to run a lawn care business it does make it a little bit tougher mentally to make time for my girlfriend after a full day of working then having to hop on calls with my brother to figure out more business things and we haven’t even reached the complicated path yet , but on the other hand she also builds me up when i’m in a bad mental space and not feeling it , she falls back when she knows it’s getting serious , and our goals don’t align at all besides wanting to not struggle , she works hard which lets me know she isn’t just waiting for me to provide so it really depends on the state of the relationship and getting your significant other to understand that some risk must be taken for long term success and happiness

I've been in a similar postion and while it may seem that the women is just wanting to be around him because of love, that is not always the case. In my case, my ex was very controlling and at one point, it was clear that she did not want me to thrive. The more successful I became, the more threatened she felt. Sometimes we outgrow our loved ones and thats okay. I see many parrallels between myself and Mr Gould. I believe that he really has tried to communicate but as he said, nothing seems to register. I tried many many times to explain to my ex what the bottom line was for the business and she never seemed to even try to understand. She had no interest or care about the business despite everything it was doing for us.

I tried to make it work and I would think we were on the same page and she would change her mind out of left field. Thank god I didn’t have children with her but man I couldn’t imagine trying to run a successful business while trying to please a partner that wants one thing but doesn’t want to make the sacrifices to attain it.

I want to say this to encourage you and motivate you in your life goals, and by no way is this meant to be demeaning to you or your relationship, but you need to put your big boy pants on. The story of how she made you stay home because it was an inconvenience for her to take your child to the doctors with her so you could work was incredibly selfish, immature, and financially crippling to you and your family. Be the man in the house she and your children need, but the one she wants. For a household to work, a business to be successful, there can only be one head of the household and right now, you are allowing her to be the decision maker. I'm not talking about being a douchebag or tyrant. I'm talking about the conversation should have been "Hunny, I know this is not going to be convenient for you, but this is what needs to done so that we can continue to progress towards our financial goals and the lifestyle we want to have". It's harder for women to understand the types of sacrifices that need to be made for men because we have to constantly choose to be away from the family more than we want or like. When kids are involved though, there needs to be a provider role and a nurture role. You can't be both while she is only one, and in most cases both parents playing both roles fail as well. I think you have a very hard decision to make, but deciding what you want and where you want to be needs to happen. Then present the plan to your other half (which is sounds like you love very dearly) and make sure you guys are on the same page. This will never EVER get any better if these things don't align. Best of luck Tiwana, and please don't take any of this advice as me telling you how to live your life or that I'm heartless. It is a struggle in my relationship with me as well with balancing home life and financial pleasures with my family being in business myself. I just know for myself it gets better when there is a game plan, discipline, and one person in charge of the final decisions. God Bless!

Children are the most important thing, more important then working every second. Later on when his kids are all messed up emotionally I hope he regrets leaving them. It costs more to leave your wife and kids because now you have two households to pay for rather then one. Him thinking it will be better is wild.

I would suggest redefining what you view as "successful." When you have 3 kids, you forfeit the opportunity to just walk away, or you are part of the problem. When the people closest to you in life respect you the most, that's success. If you're really making $1,000 NZD a day and $100,000 in debt, that's your fault. What is your debt on? Not equipment. There is no reason your debt should be going up. When your kid is in the hospital, all that money "lost" doesn't matter. Take care of your family first, then your business. Your mindset is the issue. The hunt for your dreams is costing you a life and family that's worth fighting for. I've been self-employed since I was younger than you, and I've got 5 kids. I always talk to my wife about our personal and business finances. The problem is your relationship with yourself and others. It's frustrating to see someone who doesn't man up, who runs to solitude when your family needs you to be there.

I’m gonna be honest, this guy might regret having this put online down the road. It’s unfortunate that he is in this situation. I hope he’s no longer in it and I hope he’s figured out things with his wife. This man must choose his family over his business making as much money as possible. He has children, his personal desires must come after his children and wife. His wife must understand that time at the house costs money, I hope they talk these things through.

Put the camera down, put your nose to the grindstone, success will come. OK a little more then just that. But all these landscapers making money off of you tube kinda ticks me off. Lol, I'm jealous. I would have made a great channel. I self taught my self to be a plumber in ca back in the 80's when I had to use the customers phone to call into the office for the next job. My freind started a drain channing plumbing Co and hired me. I went from college drop out waiter to plumber in one day. I rode with a guy for one day and he showed me how to clear a kitchen sink. And fix a running toilet. Then I was on my own. He ran adds out of a local shopper paper. I turned my hatch back into a plumbers car. When I needed info,I went to a supply house and asked questions. I retired with the best drain cleaning plumbing truck that was the envy of every guy who had a rig. I worked hard and never gave up. At the end of my career 30 percent of my work came from other plumbers who didn't have the equipment to get er done. But I digress. Thanks Mike for your content.

If a woman is not your partner in life and business in good and bad times, then she is not the one. Walk away and focus on your business and yourself.

Agreed 1000000000%. I guess I’m just lucky in that regard and have seen both sides of it. When we’ve been down, my wife was by my side figuring it out. When we’re up, she’s by my side enjoying it. That’s how it’s supposed to be.

Guys Western Nations laws are NOT in your favor when it comes to marrying and divorcing. The divorce rate is over 50 percent and it's all no fault divorce, which means just one party can get out of the marriage with no real reason. My ex wife's reason was I was too boring. Lol. Busting my tail to build a lawn treatment business. Working 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. Churning all the profits back into the business. She got the house and kids, I got the business. Fast forward 12 years, our business does 1.5 million a year and I might work 2 hours a day. We are growing at an extra $300,000 year now for last 2 years. My grown children will inherit a decent chunk when I leave this avatar. Good luck out there!

Dude's gotta cut that girl loose. She's obviously not willing to sacrifice for what he's trying to accomplish for HER and their family. She's selfish and will bring him down.

Earning $120/hour but having to sleep in car. $100k in liabilities but i can't see what assets you have that are close to that value. Sorry but something is or has been going horribly wrong in your business, both on balance sheet and P&L. If your employees are losing you money you need to retrain them or if they still fail cut them out asap. Are they even applying Mike's best practice principals for doing the job I wonder? Clock each job and have them videotape it, review each job that was too slow. Best of luck

@@michaelwalker4905 well that explains a lot. Jim's has very high up front costs it is a 5 year commitment at least for it to make sense. Anyway people can make bad investments, have had to learn that the hard way too several times. I think this is why it is so cringeworthy to watch for most people
