I think almost every conductor loves what he/she is doing. You cannot make ist to the top, particularly in this genre, if you‘re not extremely passionate about your profession.

His expression of pleasure and joys is communicated to his musicians. Of course, depending on the score, he is not smiling at all, but nevertheless manifestly enjoys what he is doing (is playing in fact). Bravo depuis Montréal.

Paavo is probably a better conductor than Neemi nowadays. He has inherited his father's flair and command of the orchestra but without the tendency to drive the music too hard and play fast and loud for its own sake which often marred Neemi's performances

Jeez I wish people wouldn't hate on this recording so much, I rather like it to be honest. I'm a trumpet player and it's just like listening to it if you're sitting in the section. Yes there was audio engineering involved but let's face it it wouldn't sound nearly this good out in the cheap seats. I will say that it is a bit odd how one trumpet is playing a rotary and the other is playing a natural one...never seen that before. Sounds great though.

This orchestra is outstanding! Maestro Järvi is truly great conductor and reveals the finest sound imaginable in this mozartian masterpiece. Sometimes I just feel too much haste but quality and balance of symphonic colours is nearly perfect so you can easily hear all levels of this highly polifonic texture made by Mozart especially in outer movements. I'm not saying this the best I ever heard, but it's interesting to see (and hear) how Järvi, in the coda of the finale, highlights the little fanfare in the brass 33:14. I had never heard that before, because at the same time the double basses are doing the theme.

Would you like to elaborate on this? What's an appoggiatura, and why was the resolution of the (possible) error historically informed? I'd love to learn! Thanks
@urmorph
@urmorph 5 жыл бұрын
@@maaaaaaaaarcel These are very good questions and deserve an answer. An appoggiatura is a "leaning note", usually immediately above or below the principal note, which is considered dissonant (in context) and is written in smaller type as a grace note--in this period. The "historically informed" part of the question involves the duration of this note: should it be given a definite, measured value, or just snapped off as quickly as possible? The flutist here hit a note above the one he should have (a D instead of a C#) and covered very nicely indeed by converting the written triplet C#-B-A into an even quadruplet D-C#-B-A, which would be correct if Mozart had written the D as an appogiatura--hence "historically informed." Two observations: 1) There is still dispute in certain cases as to which method of performance is correct, and 2) if we were sitting together by a piano this explanation would be much clearer. Music is like eating and sex: reading about it just isn't the same thing.
@maaaaaaaaarcel
@maaaaaaaaarcel 5 жыл бұрын
@@urmorph Thank you very much for this lucid explanation! I naturally looked up what an appoggiatura is, but only your explanation allowed me to understand what Vinicius meant, especially why the resolution was historically informed. As for the sitting together by a piano: I wished I had some talented musicians trained in classical music that could explain such things in persona. Thank you again.

I tend to be with you there. A lot of modern conductors/orchestras make that choice these days, it seems: They allow the brass to overpower the winds and even strings. I find that in works of Mozart, and many of Mendelssohn, it has a negative effect. Still, overall a fine performance and recording.

without wanting to sound cynical, Clara was likely not yet as important "a part" of the HR-Orchestra back in 2012, as she appears to be now with maestro Andrés Orozco-Estrada for the past 5 years or so. Just compare her visibility to the audience in this recording where she was mostly hidden from the front-camera behind a "sheet-tripod" (and not better visible to the camera in the right-wing) as opposed to more recent concerts with HR.
