Hello George in Ireland from Joerg in Germany! . Nice channel, and now subscribed. I am an engineer and ex German navy diver and got very interested in watches during my college days. I spent a summer at Laco Watches in Pforzheim, Germany. It was very interesting but not a career for me, but I got very interested in watches as a hobby and used some famous watches for diving before dive computers. We continued to use them as emergency back ups in case of glitches in the computers. I have a strong opinion on watch winders and it is do not use them. No piece of mechanical equipment whether it is a watch or a car or a washing machine should be running unnecessarily. You are just wearing it out faster, lubricated or not. Wind your watch occasionally enough to keep it running for a few hours, maybe 10 to 20 winds. Do it once once or twice a month. The silicon lubrication will keep it in good condition. If you use a watch winder the only thing you will have is you need to service the watch more often. And believe me, you don't want to be servicing an expensive watch too often. It costs me €600 to service my Omega Seamaster, which is my most expensive watch. I can only imagine what a Rolex would cost. Service is not based on time but on hours of use. With a watch winder it increases hours of use and service intervals that should be 10 years become 5 years or even less. Don't do it George. Leave the watch winder in the recycling container! 😁

Nice one George, but a watch winder is a bad idea particularly if you have valuable watches but it's the same for all. . I got one but don't use it now after getting some sound advice. Speaking to a very experienced watchmaker here in Turkey who builds watches and repairs everything from Seiko to Omega told me not to use one. His opinion is that it's better to give your watch only enough winds to get the seconds moving and then stop winding immediately, and do that once a week or every 2 weeks. All movements that are operating are getting wear on the components. It's like a car you don't drive often, you only need to run it for 10 minutes once a week. In the old times the oils used coagulated when not in use as they were animal or other organic based. Now oils are silicon based, do not coagulate and don't dry up like those old oils. In fact many of the top watchmakers are dead set against watch winders as unnecessary and causing wear and tear. A modern watch not running for a week or more will be fine. One example, I had a watch stuck in customs in Turkey for 3 months sitting in a pending box before getting it released due to a paperwork issue. When I got it, it worked perfectly on the first wind and it wasn't even a new watch, it was a 1958 Swiss Avia vintage. Watch winders look cool but they're not doing anything good for your watch and may be just shortening it's lifetime. Don't waste your money or your electricity. If you want to display your watches a nice box can do that.

Hi Brian, I really appreciate the feedback and the advice. I personally believe that it has it's place, especially when you have a massive collection. There are so many influencing factors, complications being one of them, and also like mentioned in the video , fully aware of the stress on the components, but I think each with their own. Also, it depends on the space available in the house. The Moszly is tiny and you can add more as you grow if you want but it can still take a lot of space if you have too many. Thanks for watching and I do appreciate the support!

Ah, I have written a similar comment. I agree, the watch winder is not a good idea. It makes no logical sense to run any machine unnecessarily.

@@bbwt9991 Thanks. I was just reading your comment. There really is no logic whatsoever to running a modern watch unnecessarily. I suppose if you have a collection of affordable watches that have easily replaceable movements like the Seiko NH movements, it doesn't really matter. But for a good watch that'll cost serious money to service or repair from unneeded wearing of components a watch winder is definitely a bad idea. I'm not an engineer but your logic is flawless.

@@WatcheswithGeorge George, complications like perpetual calendars are even more reason not to use a watch winder. Do you know the cost of servicing a highly complicated watch movement. I can tell you it is hugely expensive. Better to let it stop, follow my advice and set it again when you are using it, it's not an inconvenience, takes a couple of minutes and your watch will last for many years longer than it being on a winder. Think of your watch as a machine. Even if everything is lubricated you are still wearing out the parts.
